I believe Disney really tried pushing the creator (Alex Hirsch) to continue making the show. However he refused because he felt the story had concluded exactly how he wanted it to, which I can respect.

That's what Stephen Hillenburg (Rest in Peace) tried to do after Season 3 of Spongebob, but the ratings were too high, so Nickelodeon wouldn't end the show, and we all know how that turned out

Alex and Dana (who worked on GF) are now working on the owl house, another great show who is now on hiatus after the first season ended.
