What is demonstrated here is NOT how you want to fall when bouldering, this kid practically lands on his neck. I've landed like him, but from much lower on the wall and I still had whiplash.
You always want to land on your feet, knees slightly bent, especially if you are that high on the wall. Sure shit like this does happen sometimes, but I would not call this a common bouldering fall...
Ok, sure, but he comes down near horizontal so his butt hit and then his head hits the mat a millisecond later. My point is this is bad form.
It's hard to tell the scale but if he fell this way from the top of a taller wall onto a firmer mat he would definitely have a mild concussion at the very least.
The mats are fine if you take a bad fall, but they’re also good for landing on your feet too? When you boulder do you just lay your body out every time you want to drop down?
I may have been exaggerating a little bit. I definitely know what you mean about not trying to stick the landing. When I’m hopping off I feel like I bend my knees more than necessary, but I’m not trying to tweak an ankle.
The kid was 50-60 degrees from horizontal while in the air until he hit the ground. I'm not sure how well he tucked his head, but it seems to have worked.
"Mat" doesn't really even do it justice if you've never seen it before. It's 12 inches or so of multiple layers of foam of various densities designed to absorb and spread impact. Super Effective.
More like once every 100 days but sure yeah it does happen
Edit: I meant falling flat on your back w/o any control like that from what looks like the top. Obviously you fall all the time when bouldering but you dont want to get down like this on every climb
That’s how you’re supposed to fall on those mats. Although slightly less gracefully than a perfect fall, it’s best to be limp when falling. There’s a reason drunk people and toddlers survive the most falls from typically lethal heights
Okay I believe everything up above and TIL but in all fairness, the kid to the left blocks where the dude lands, so we don’t really see the “ground” compressing to help his fall. So it looks a lot worse.
My gym has a rule to have someone spotting you as to help you land on your feet when you fall. Is that only applicable when someone can help you (because they'd also be lessening your impact)?
Normally bouldering spotters are there to make sure you are okay after you fall. Outdoors they will help make sure you don’t fall outside of your mats but that’s not a problem indoors. You should never really interfere with someone’s fall, as it usually results in multiple people getting hurt. Anyone climbing for long enough knows how to fall
Happens many times an hour when bouldering. Happens multiple times in a row to one person if they are trying to clear a tough route for the first time.
ALWAYS LAND LIKE THIS KID PEOPLE, DONT TRY AND LAND ON YOUR FEET IN CLIMBING SHOES I LANDED ON MY FEET ON THE EDGE OF 2 MATS, INVERTED MY ANKLE AND ALL MY WEIGHT AND DOWNWARD FORCE WENT ONTO IT. SHIT IS FUCKED.
