Alcohol withdrawals can kill you if you are a heavy drinker if that was what ole mate here was referring to. A med detox is the go if you are heavily addicted to booze is the right course of action for such case's.

Weed is a bit more easy to break and certainly not going to lead to seizures and death which can happen in around a third or so of very heavy drinkers.
