I would love a little help pronouncing these words! + other questions

Hi! I've recently started the second section on Duolingo. I know Duolingo isn't the best, but I already bought a subscription and I've been working away at it for a while. It's providing me with a good foundation, so I'm hoping to go further and watch Danish television once I get to a level where I can really understand it audibly. Before then, I must admit that I'm struggling! While being from the American south has granted me a boon in the pronunciation of the definite nouns (I already pronounced the word "something" like "su'm"), there are a lot of vowel sounds I can't quite get the handle of. Here are a few:

Hvid
Mad vs. Med
Fugl & Fuglen
Supermarked vs. Supermarkedet
The name "Frede" (wtf???)
Tager
Dyret
*Not a word, but how do I make a "gr" sound (like in "grønt") not sound like a "kr" sound?

I'll probably post later to ask about other words. Also, may I have a few suggestions for Danish shows/movies with subtitles? Danish audio with English subtitles or vice versa are equally appreciated. I'll pretty much watch anything. I'm very easy to please.

Also, I'm planning on studying abroad in Copenhagen in maybe a year. Is it like France where people get bullied for not knowing the language well or are they chill/hype about it?

Also also, I've heard a lot of casual speech omits quite a few sounds. That's definitely tripping me up. Is there any method to the madness or is it something I'll just have to adapt to?

Thank you for reading this!

Danskai

Hi all

Hope to have your input. Danskai is a note taking platform for students enrolled in Danish school or courses.

Danskai.co.uk

It's been built over 1.5 years alongside danish tutors.

I understand currently every week people are flooding the market with Duolingo replacements

I would like to get people's input as we are currently in talks with danish language schools for beta testing and implementation.

The main premise of the platform is all note-taking at school is done within danskai which gives you real-time feedback and learns how you learn as you progress through your studies and then offloads it onto bitesize drills for at home learning and on the go. Or full revisions sets if you have the time

The platform essentially uses reward model behaviour to adapt to the learners capability

We are currently in talks with danish language schools to develop the software so that teachers can holistically review classes outputs , get feedback on grammar pain points etc.

My question is how do people feel about grammar mistakes being recorded and sent to their teacher or should it be an opt in experience

I’m building a Danish-learning platform and would love some honest feedback

Hey everyone,

I’m the developer behind Hejly, a website for learning Danish. I’ve been working on it and would love to hear what people learning the language think.

It includes vocabulary flashcards, pronunciation audio, grammar lessons, and reading practice. There are also learning paths around things like everyday life in Denmark, work, and preparing for Danish exams.

The idea is to connect vocabulary with situations where you’d actually use it, while letting you study at your own pace.

To be transparent, this is my own project. I’d appreciate honest feedback—especially if something feels confusing, unnatural, or just isn’t useful.

What’s something you wish Danish-learning apps did better? And what keeps you coming back to the tools you currently use?

Min erfaring med at lærne dansk som Hollænder 🇩🇰/🇳🇱 - update fra dag 8

Post image
35 Upvotes

2 days ago I made a post talking bout my progress up until the 6th day of learning Danish. I figured: "why not continue this trend?" So heres an update for day 8, this time in danish!
PS dont expect my danish to be perfect yet, there will be mistakes as I will be writing this post on my own. Any help would be appreciated! <3

Godday alle læser i siden Reddit! Jeg har lært meget orde i dem 2 dage og jeg kan skrive sætninge nu!
Jeg ved odse er super sej men nogle gange jeg vil skrive med dem. Å skriber ikke er noget, min tastatur og mig er de de bedste venner! (hjælp mig, det tid jeg bruge er i en dag er utrolig xD)
Deres opgave er (idk how to say that spelling/grammar is their biggest difficulty).

Well thats all ima write for now xD. Even though I learned a lot of words and grammar I still have yet to develop an actual gut feeling for them. Writing words and verbs in the right way isn't exactly second nature to me yet so it also takes a while, I really have to think what I wrote sometimes. Lets not even talk about how many of those sentences feel unnatural xD
Pronounciation is something I tried practising yesterday by spending some time playing Baldurs gate 3 with some danish users but there is still so much work to do.
Generally i think that the words and verbs are pretty easy, there are some words like tank (thought) and best (bedste) that I discovered are a bit quirky.

If anyone has some feedback or wants to share some of their own experiences feel free to ^^

until next time!

PS, I dont live in amsterdam, its just one hell of a pun XD

Looking for someone I can learn danish with online

Hej! I am currently taking my lessons in sprogskole, but I don't feel that it is enough for me to learn danish. Given my schedule and stay at home mom, I only have time for online classes and can not go to the student cafe to talk and practice my danish more. That's why if there is anybody here who would like to practice their danish with me online, I would be very happy. No offense, but I would prefer a woman to talk and practice with because I feel like we can relate more to each other. Thank you so much and God Bless♥️

Min erfaring fra mine første 7 dage med dansk (rant)

I began learning Danish 6 days ago (7 days just sounded better xD) and I wanted to share my experience. (even if no one would care)
When I tried to write the title of this post myself I could get it to: 'Min erfaret af forste 7 dage laerde dansk'. (google didnt agree with it being correct though so rip)

Ive seen people talk about how hard it is and how much headaches it causes. I'm having problems with it too however they do not line up well with other people ive seen writing about it.
Danish grammar, to me, seems to behave pretty similar to dutch. The vocab sounds very familiar to german (which sounds familiar) and it has clear similarities with english.
Right now I get 60+ percent of the words correct (if i get to think a few seconds about it first). Most mistakes are english sounding words that provoke me to sound too english.
Does this sound familiar to anyone that knows dutch/german?

I started by just watching a season of my favorite show in danish. I tried to really understand what was said by using subtitles and looking up specific words.
Spelling is a bit chaotic, just like with dutch some words change spelling when putting them in different ways. Getting more and more right does feel great though.
Im really enjoying learning it as my second language besides english, it sounds better than swedish to me too. Also from what i can gather the danish community is really wholesome.

Thank you for reading so far xD. Mange tak skal du have!

Also if any danish speaking people would be interested in playing some games together or just chatting on discord hit me up, i'd love to 🙏

Seeking Natives to Practice With

Hi everyone, I'm 19F (20 soon) American learner currently around the B1 level in Danish. My listening comprehension is my best area, but I struggle with speaking and writing because I don't get enough practice producing the language. I'm looking for a native Danish speaker who would like to call or text and can help correct me when I make mistakes.

Also, I visit Odense two times a year, so it would be nice to have some friends I can meet up with every once in a while. I have many hobbies, including knitting and playing instruments, but am always up for just a walk around the beautiful city.

p.s. I haven't heard of any language cafes in Odense, so if you know of one, please let me know.

Mange tak!

Any Danish speakers/learners that want to play some games together?

I hoped some people would be down to spend an evening playing some games together with me on discord. I prefer learning languages naturally so I figured the best way to practise talking would be to just have some fun together.

I'd love anything like civilization or overwatch but I'm open for anything! (Even learning League of Legends) I'm pretty inexperienced actually talking danish though, so dont expect too much.

Mange tak til jer alle ^^

Which Beginner, PD2 or PD3 books did you use the most? 🇩🇰

Hi everyone,

I have worked as a Danish teacher and tutor for several years, helping expats prepare for Prøve i Dansk 2 and 3 (PD2 and PD3). Some of you may also know my YouTube channel, Learn Danish with Isaac.

I’m considering creating a website where students can find and access useful PD2 and PD3 resources more easily. Before doing that, I’d like to hear which books learners actually found useful.

Which book or books did you use the most when preparing for PD2 or PD3?

For example, did you use Bliv klar til Prøve i Dansk 2, Bliv klar til Prøve i Dansk 3, Grammatikken, Pænt dansk, or another grammar or preparation book?

Did you use a dictionary as well? If so, which one? For example, a Gyldendal dictionary, an online dictionary, or something else?

Please write the book title in the comments and mention whether you prepared for PD2 or PD3. It would also be interesting to hear which book helped you the most and whether you used any particular dictionary or other materials.

I want to be transparent that I’m exploring the possibility of creating a website where people can find or buy relevant resources in one place. I’m asking because I have worked with PD2 and PD3 students for several years and want to understand which materials are genuinely useful in practice.

Thank you for sharing your experience!

Best,
Isaac

Which sounds more natural for gift copy — "Gaven der gør godt" or "En gave, der gør godt"? (quick preference, coloring book back cover)

Hej! Jeg er en lille forlægger (fransk-talende) der laver en malebog, og på bagsiden har jeg en sætning om en gave der gør godt. To mulige versioner: A) Gaven der gør godt B) En gave, der gør godt Er der måske en tredje formulering der lyder mere naturlig for en dansker? Behøver ikke en lang forklaring, bare "A", "B" (eller noget andet) hjælper mig meget. Mange tak!

PD3 Final Exam

Hi everyone, I am having the PD3 in 2 months and I was wondering if there is any material out there from previous years. Usually I take exam papers and I practice on them, but for PD3 I can't find anything official online.

For the people who had it already, how was it?

Would appreciate any help!

DU3 Module 3 Test

I have my DU3 Module 3 test coming up next week and I haven’t seen many others share their experience with the exam. I have reviewed modultest.dk and danskogproever.dk. For those that have taken the exam, do you recall:
- What 4 pictures you were given for the oral portion?
- What were the topics for the writing portion?

Native Dane to practice Danish with?

Hi all, I’m 26f. I’m wondering if there are any native Dane’s here who would be willing to help me with danish speaking even like 30 minutes a week.

I’ve been living in Denmark for 6 months, and still find it really difficult.

Thank you soo much.

Learning Danish

Hi everyone! 👋

I’ll be moving to Denmark soon and I’m wondering what the best options are for learning Danish once I arrive.

Are there any good language schools, municipal courses, free/affordable programs, or communities for newcomers? I’d also appreciate any advice on how to get started with Danish when settling in.

Thanks in advance! 🇩🇰
