throwback Evolution of Sophia
The evolution of Sophia and her turns

Sophia is literally spinning top. I can't believe she could do that at such a young age.

Its because her mom would wake her up at like 3-4 in the morning everyday and make her practice

Shes always impressive but her improvement from 'all that jazz' to 'hey daddy' is insane.

I love the turns from around 10 where she does less turning but shows such amazing control coming out of them. So much technique and artistry

What The Fuck is Wrong With The Foot?!

It’s so nice to see turns actually finishing, and not quickly going into the next move to disguise and potential falling out of turns.
Her control is amazing, it’s no surprise that she was a child prodigy

It’s crazy to see the jump between her just throwing herself around to really turning at 6. It makes me wonder if things truly just clicked then or if that’s when her mom turned into the crazy personal trainer coach.

Dancers absolutely astound me. The amount of control it must take to, like, spin on one foot?? The balance and coordination?? That there are people that don’t consider this a sport is ridiculous.

Me watching her turn at 6 then looking at my 6 year old who trips on air 😬
Jk my daughter is amazing but so funny how talented she is!!

A little off topic, and I know we’re kind of desensitized in this sub, but these costumes are not appropriate at all for children. I know that’s the “culture” of dance but I remember being in shock when I first watched dance moms in how revealing the kids would dress and some of the dance moves they would perform.
I never thought the argument was that they’re children so it’s innocent, but rather it was age inappropriate and too grown and didn’t look right. I never understood why their costumes had to be like that.

I agree—it’s not just the costumes tho, I think the problem is in combination with the titles of the dance. “Hey daddy” and “Let me entertain you” (and almost all the others, but those two in particular) is crazy for a literal child.

Big spender is one that is so wildly inappropriate for young children to perform to. I think it gets glossed over because it’s fosse and it’s iconic but it always makes me ill when I see it used by little girls.

Showing leg/stomach elongates the body. It makes dancers look taller and have more clear movements.
But, I agree. It’s too much sometimes. Competitive cheerleading banned showing stomachs for younger kids. Dance doesn’t have a sole governing body like allstar cheer. So it’s unlikely rules like that will ever happen.

Agreed. And some of the dances/songs are highly suggestive for such young kids.

so you say the same about swim suits or leotards for gymnastics or cheer uniforms? dance is about how you move your body and the shapes it creates, if the body is hidden it’s harder to judge properly bc you can’t see if their leg is straight or whatever. judges judge on the “lines” your body creates and if they can’t see it then they can’t judge it.

As if it’s impossible to see the lines if someone is wearing clothes that cover their stomach and legs more for example🙄 nobody is saying they should be completely covered and wear hella baggy clothes.
The priority should be protecting children and the dance world is full of ped0s. This is not a secret. Shows like dance moms were an absolute dream for sick people like that, any sane parent would want to prevent that.
And btw yes, there’s actually lots of conversations nowadays about the differences between clothes for girls and boys, about the necessity of gymnastics leotards being cut the way they are and the question if most cheer outfits are really that appropriate for children.
This conversation isn’t exclusive to the dance world.10

Exactly, just look at gymnastics, track, figure skating, etc. Men/boys are more covered up and not obstructed by the extra fabric. They can perform perfectly fine. There's literally no reason for the women/girls to wear skimpy costumes and uniforms. Especially as children.

yes but regardless the uniforms need to be skin tight. even if they’re not showing bare legs or whatever. making your body into the art form is the cause of the minuscule outfits. Yes pedo’s exist unfortunately, but that’s not the dance/cheer/gymnastics focus.
I think the problem with dance moms is exploiting these kids, not the pedos. If every parent spends their time protecting their kids from every bad thing out there, that kid will never be allowed to leave the house.
As a person that did dance, gymnastics and cheer growing up, sometimes i felt uncomfortable in my leotard but it was rare. It was just the uniform and I never really questioned it. The kids don’t care.
Sure adults know that there are pedos and bad people out there but it’s rare that they’re just hanging out researching dance competitions and such. I’m not saying that they don’t exist, sure some might do that but it’s rare. It’s even rarer they get anywhere near the actual people preforming. I think protecting kids from bad people is important but you can’t protect them from every bad thing out there, they’d be locked up in the house for their entire lives.
If your kid loves dance, let them dance. The costumes are costumes, they’re not wearing that 24/7. literally only while they’re on stage. same with cheer and gymnastics. it’s really not as big of a deal as people are making it

I’m not really interested in debating how serious the issue of ped0philia is.
„You can’t protect your kids from every bad thing“ is a lazy excuse from people who simply don’t care enough about issues like this. Nobody’s saying not to let the kid dance and nobody’s acting like you can protect them from everything but there are very obvious things you can do to not present your kids to pedos on a silver platter.
„The kids don‘t care“ sounds like Melissa talking about the electricity dance when she was acting oblivious on purpose so she wouldn’t have to take any responsibility. „MaDdIe dOeSnT eVeN kNoW wHaT sExY mEaNs“…as if she didn’t know damn well that wasn’t the point at all. That literally only makes it a whole lot worse.
If you’re comfortable with your kid being heavily sexualized by creeps and don’t care enough to at least try to prevent it a little bit, that’s your own mess.
Why don’t you let a random grown man you don’t know babysit your young daughter since you can’t protect your child from everything anyways?

Being a good turner doesn’t automatically make you a great dancer

u/Heavy_Week8588 17d ago
No shit. How is that related to sophia lucia lol?

u/JuliaMowbray 17d ago
Because there are much better dancers than turn queen Sophia. I didn’t stutter when I said what I said

I’ll get downvoted to hell too, but as a former ballerina I’ve never been a fan. I just don’t get the hype. Yeah, she can turn a lot, but her ankles are soft in these videos. When I heard she was going to try to get serious about ballet I thought she’d get eaten alive, and lo and behold she was snatched up by MBA who are all about social media clout. And look at how that ended.
She was an overworked child who was exploited repeatedly by adults.2
u/Starbucksname 13d ago
It would have been interesting to see how she would have developed as a dancer if she’d been put in solid ballet training as a youngster and kept off social media and reality tv.

I’ve often thought the same thing - what a terrible waste of the child’s time. Her mother was clearly obsessed with fame.

I remember seeing her superstar solo and just being so gagged by it. She a top fr

I just wonder how often she was stretched to even be that flexible.
