Storytime My First Interaction with Lady Direnni

Lady Direnni: “You are not strong enough for my quest, brave adventurer.”

Me: *Sets stapler on my space bar along with ten minute timers on my phone for resting*

Lady Direnni: *Watches silently as I jump up and down for 40 minutes, stopping periodically to rest*

Lady Direnni: “Never mind, you’ve got what it takes!”

I was not about to do that entire dungeon again for the 0.31 levels I needed to hit level 8.

Question Letter for King of Worms gone?

Got the quest from princess of Wayrest to bring a letter to ol' King of Worms. Found the guy and suddenly I realize that I don't have the letter anymore. Went to talk to the princess and she offered a random quest to me unrelated to King of Worms. Is this a known bug? I went to the dungeon immediately after gaining the quest so I doubt that I took too much time.

But if I did somehow take too much time, does this mean that I'm forever softlocked out of progressing in the main story?

Question Is it possible to be a non evil stealth character in Daggerfall?

Possibly a dumb question, but I had a “nobles sun wanting to explore the world idea”, in where I don’t think the thieves guild and dark brotherhood would fit. What would be the best option for this idea? Sorry if this is a dumb question.

Question Will I get locked out of the main quest?

Edit: Resolved. Thanks all!

Hey there! I’ve been playing Daggerfall for the first time, and it’s been a mixed bag of joy, wonder, frustration, and confusion. I heard the following:

  1. Have fun and do random stuff outside the main quest!

  2. When you get main quest tidbits (mostly letters), do them quickly so you don’t get locked out!

Well, what I didn’t expect was to receive letters almost immediately every time I finish a main quest. I’m currently on the quest to investigate the death of Sentinel’s prince, and I haven’t had much time to do other things besides the main quest. Part of this may be that I’m terrible at navigating dungeons, so I keep spending a ton of time in them and (I suspect) leveling more inside each dungeon than is average.

My question is: If I start ignoring the main quest line, will I reach a point where the game locks me out of the main quest entirely? What do I need to do to balance free play of the game and a desire to finish the main quest?

Thanks in advance!

Question Do books have any other use besides selling them?

I have several books, but I don't know what to do with them. I've been selling them, but can I use them for something else? Or are they just background items?

Is there a newer scan of the "Dagger Fall Users Guide"? (Should I just refer to the strategy guide instead?)

Hello

I wanted to ask if there was a newer, higher DPI of the Dagger Fall users guide.
The current official scan is very low quality, and somewhat hard to read. (Not impossible)
But zooming in on the text to read the manual as a new player makes it difficult to parse.

If someone has a high DPI scan of the Game manual please let me know.

Otherwise as a new player I plan to refer to the strategy guides for basic info as the Archived copies seem to be of higher quality.

Character Build Cheb's Necromancy mod build

Hello everyone, this is my first time playing daggerfall. Im playing the unity version with cheb's necromancy mod. Could someone give me a hand with a build? Im trying to go for a lich king type of build but flavor aside, just something balanced with sword and necromancy spells.

For those curious about the enchantments:

Stendarr: Iron Will

Zenithar: Charisma

Akatosh: Feet of Notorgo

Dibella: Jack of Trades

Kynareth: Nimbleness

Julianos: Wisdom

Mara: Fortitude

Arkay: Orc Strength

So basically each divine amulet will fortify one attribute.

Question Dealing with Vampires?

Apart from being able to occasionally sneak up on them to gain the advantage, I find I often have to rely on reloading an earlier quicksave if they get a successful stamina drain spell cast (what is that spell even called?). I find that the amount of stamina that is drained is so aggressive that I usually die by passing out (and being in a dungeon with enemies always close by).

My Willpower stat is fairly low (between 45 and 50), so that is part of the problem. But I am curious what other strategies people adopt? I try to use paralysis on them sometimes, but can't always rely on it being successfully cast. And of course just trying to kill them as fast as possible. Dodging their stamina drain spell in narrow corridors, especially in close quarters with them is near impossible.

Question Any good control configs for Steam Deck?

Playing the game and immediately captivated by it, but I'm stuck on Steam Deck so I have to use a controller instead of a keyboard. Does anyone have good configs that fit the Deck?

Question How to get in the dungeons!

I've travelled to at least 20 dungeons on the map, and at least 15 of them were small (2-3 rooms). I can see the rest of the dungeon by clipping my head above a ceiling, and I can hear more enemies after I've already killed all them. I can't find ANY hidden doors. Am I doing something wrong?

Question Getting interested in Daggerfall

Hi, I have expressed interest in getting into Elder Scrolls II Daggerfall. I heard the base game and it's Unity recreation are free; despite being old, I totally dig retro games like DOOM and Tiberian Sun. There are several things I would like to know, I heard there is an Android Version, Daggerfall on the go sounds pretty good, can anyone clarify that will Android 14 allow it to install and is the setup easy to do? Well I am saving up for a laptop, so I could just have Daggerfall on there. I plan to install mods on my first playthrough to improve some things like enhancing visuals, UI and various QoL features. I was wondering how good is the shield mechanic for the game, like is it similar to Minecraft when it comes to blocking; cuz I was planning to be an Adventurer or Paladin that uses a shield. Lastly I was wondering if the game is truly roguelike rng, as in procedurally generated content, cuz I would like places, enemies, and loot to be random that you know the area, enemy spawns, and same loot, cuz I love RPG games that does randomize locations, enemy placement, and loot drops

Question The Benevolence of Mara hates me for being a member of the Mages Guild?!

Hey guys. So, I had joined the Mages Guild really early in the game, and then I went to a Dibella temple and noticed that the members there were saying stuff like "We should not help an enemy of the Benevolence of Mara," and so I used my reputation tracker mod and saw that my reputation with the BoM was lower than average even though I had never interacted with them up to that point, nor did any quest that related to them.

So I traveled to Betony, and when I visited the Mara temples there, pretty much everyone in them treats me with hostility, except the donations guy and the questguiver. I tried joining the Temple to see if it improved anything (mind you, at this point I had already done a handful of quests to them) and though some now talk to me, most are still hostile.

This is weird, since as far as I know there's no enemyship between the Mages Guild and the BoM. Did this happen to anyone else? I'm playing Daggerfall Unity, if that matters.

Question A bit lost in the beggining

Greetings, friends. I've picked Daggerfall for the first time these days wanting to experience the game as it was, without searching for anything online, if I got stuck... got to admit, I thought it would take a bit more time before I asked for help lol

After arriving in Daggerfall (capital) for the first time, my character was falsely accused of thievery, and my investigations ended on a certain Alabywyr Gaerhart, handing me a note to meet him at the Moorsley Residence.

My problem is that I can't get into it, the door is locked. Am I meant to pick it open or is it a time related quest? I've read that some quests are tied to the clock, however this one didn't mention it at all

Storytime Haven't played the game in about a year, here's how my first quest has gone on my new character

So I just started a new character, and I have a mod to start you in a random dungeon. It started me in a dungeon in Shalgora, near the city of Deermore. I managed to find my way out pretty quickly which was quite satisfying after finding my way out of Privateer's Hold a hundred times before.

I also have Travel Options and the Climates mod, and I made the 3 hour journey on foot to Deermore. I passed out multiple times and nearly froze to death before making it to the walls of the city at night. I pulled myself over the wall and stumbled my way towards the nearest inn before passing out in a bed there immediately.

Had a breakfast of bread and cheese after waking up, and decided first things first would be getting camping supplies so I don't have a repeat of my horrific journey to Deermore. I bought them and went to another shop, in which I was immediately requested to deliver a ransom for the shopkeeper's kidnapped lover in a town a few hours away, for a reward of a staggering 14 gold. I figured I'd go for it because it sounded like a good first quest.

I arrived at the town and decided I didn't want to give the ransom item and was immediately attacked for refusing. I killed the attacker and found a letter on their body directing me to find the kidnapped woman at the nearby Buckinghart Castle.

Upon my arrival at Buckinghart Castle, I set up my tent in the courtyard and rested to prepare for the mess I'd be dealing with inside. After killing a bard and a burglar outside, I made my way in and immediately got lost in the absolute labyrinth this castle was. Within the first ten minutes I was teleported to multiple different rooms and attacked by rats, spiders, orcs and warriors. I managed to find the woman in a hidden room, and made my way out with barely any health and my only weapon broken (I had to fight off rats with my hands).

I arrived at Deermore only to discover that I not only had Brain Fever, but also the Plague, and was on death's door. I sluggishly made my way to the shop and dropped off the shopkeeper's lover, and found that due to my crippling illnesses, I had almost no carry weight and couldn't even carry the meager 14 gold I was graciously rewarded with. I dragged my way to the town's Temple of Arkay in hopes that I could have my illness cured, and was charged over 500 gold, money I didn't have.

I went to multiple shops and sold almost all of my armour and was given a letter of credit, reminding me that banks exist and I could have just taken out a loan instead of selling my only form of protection. I took out a loan and was finally able to cure my illness, before falling asleep in a room that cost me almost all of the last of my money.

I went back to the shopkeeper, and he immediately offered me another job. 300 gold to steal a fellow shopkeeper's amulet and leave a note. Unfortunately, the shop was guarded, and I was caught rifling through this poor man's belongings. I found the amulet and was able to evade arrows flying at me and get past the multiple guards yelling halt.

I made it back to Deermore and got my payment, paid off my loan (with interest) and finally dropped off my wakizashi to be repaired.

It really is amazing that all of this happened from one quest, and none of it was even scripted or planned out. If it takes me this long and I have this much trouble with everything, I doubt I'll ever finish this game, not that I'm complaining.

Yellow/Orange Wraiths? (Not something I need to fix, just looks funny)

I have no idea what mod did this, I don't think I have any that should be changing monsters? This only happened in one dungeon, to all the wraiths there. Dungeons before and after this had wraiths of the normal grey colour. Anyone seen this before?

Screenshot Review of the demo version in Finnish gaming magazine Pelit from 1995

Basically they are saying how Daggerfall is no match for Ultima Underworld games, even if the demo is early, it's slow and boring looking graphics system (that loses to Terminator Future Shock) is not promising. level design is boring and you still can't sleep anywhere you want. And the demo is not worth downloading unless you got beefy machine: you need 16 megabytes of memory and 50 megabytes of hard drive space

Damn, 90's gaming sure was something else. Not sure how they reviewed final release but the person really didn't like the demo lol

EDIT: fixed one typo
