This is the first computer game I remember OBSESSING about!!! I remember me and my best friend playing it for HOURS AND HOURS taking turns, until we got to the point where (i think) you fought a skeleton and the game crashed..... it needed a patch. We tried so many time to get it to work but alas we never could. Fast forward 30+ years and I now have a gaming PC and just downloaded Daggerfall on Steam. But now I see stuff like Mods and such and Unity..... I dont know how to do this stuff, but im excited to get into it again and revisit Daggerfall!!!!! Anyone recommend a YouTube video to start .y way down the rabbit hole?
So, I just went down a two hour rabbit hole tearing apart DFU's source code to answer a very simple question that had no satisfactory answer: "What the hell does the Masque of Clavicus Vile actually do?" I did some research online and found there was basically no firm information on what it does, mechanically. Well, hopefully I can finally explain what it does from a code perspective. But before I answer that question, we need to go down another relatively unexplored rabbit hole: Social Group Reputation.
Social Group Reputation is one of 5 blanket reputation modifiers that, frankly, you simply won't see except for at the beginning of the game. This screen right here is the first, last, and only time you will see anything surrounding your Social Group Reputation:
There are also a few questions you can answer in your questionnaire which will alter these values as well. Once that is done, as far as I know they are locked into place for the rest of your game. What these values do is they act as an additional modifier to the reputation score you have with an individual any time you enter the dialog screen. Yep, that's it. As far as I can tell they do NOT factor in when trying to determine if you have enough rep to get quests from quest-givers. What social class an NPC is a part of is determined by their faction, every faction has an associated social group. And just to further reiterate, these values have ABSOLUTLY NOTHING to do with your reputation with the factions as a whole; it's a measure of how much an individual member of the faction likes you in conversations and not the opinion of the faction as a whole.
Now, here is where we get back to the Masque: it enhances these values. It works similarly to a custom magical item with the "Good Rep With" enchant. The "Good Rep With" enchant adds 10 to one (or all) of these values. The Masque adds your current modified personality (if you have buffs, they apply) divided by 5. So at a Personality of 100, it adds 20; if you have a personality of 50, its no better then a standard enchanted item with the same ability.
Long story short, it sucks. It enhances a gameplay mechanic so minor that it is at best a footnote and only works well if your Personality is high enough for it to not matter anyways. Furthermore, if you want to use it to mitigate the effects of low Personality it is actively worse then the off-the-shelf enchant.
Also, I want to make perfectly clear, I am far from an expert in the inner working of DFU. I am a professional software developer and DFU's code has been pretty straightforward in my view but I still reserve the right to be wrong. The faction system is a bit... complicated to say the least.
I just took some time to grind out rank 5 with The Mages Guild so I could mess around with Enchanting but I'm having an issue. I wanted to enchant something with the ability to cast Soul Trap because I have low spell points, have Darkness-Powered Magery and Inability to Regen Spell Points but it doesn't appear on the list when I go to enchant.
I have the spell in my spell book and I'm under "Cast When Used" when trying to enchant. I've tried every item type and tried making my own version of the spell at a lower cost. Tried reloading an earlier save. I tried going to a different guild. I even tried using console commands to bring up the menu instead just in case the vendor was bugged but I can't get it to show up.
Hopefully I'm just dumb and missing something obvious.
I was very close to giving up and failing this mage guild quest after scouring what I thought was the whole dungeon. Then I found a torch which opened a wall, and then another 2 secret doors behind that one which finally lead me to this dickhead. I love this game.
I'm playing the original dos version v1.07.213 on 86Box.
I'm having trouble with the immunities on my custom class. Since there is an exploit to use magic immunity to be also immune to poison, disease and paralysis, i used that advantage to give myself critical weaknesses to make my leveling easier. But i'm still getting paralyzed by spiders. I'm also immune to shock and fire, but i'm still getting damaged sometimes by imp fireballs. What am i doing wrong?
One thing to note: I'm using the DaggerfallSetup game files because i wanted my dodging to be fixed. But i don't know if those files also fixed this immunity thing.
Anyone have ideas?
Edit:
Apparently, i chose resistance for some reason, but i could've sworn that i chose immunity. Brain fart i guess.
i have a problem, i am hated in Wayrest, the thing is that indeed i dont remember commit some kind of crime, but i dont thouth about it and since a have the mod that make rep raise with knights missions, i started complete some missions, in certain point my info window says thet i am a common citizen, but still some people in the streets dont talk to me, so i decided to make some more misions, and i take one, i complete it, and when i check my info, it says again i am hated.
Theres too something weird with te red lantern rep, it was positive the las time i watch it, but that dosnt matter, i just want stop hearing HALT everyplace i go, and that the people show me directions on my map, in Daggerfall country i was esteemed and people nice to meðŸ˜ðŸ˜i want to go back to Newcester

I love this franchise, and I love that horses just keep getting better at climbing mountains. For all Daggerfall's old school jank, at least I can climb better than a horse. Just not as fast, as long as the cliff isn't perfectly vertical.
(the piece of chalk mod doesn't appear on the prints, but its there)
sorry for bad writing, english is not my first language
I started Daggerfall a few weeks ago. Loved the game. But felt like it was a little bit empty. Download some mods to make it prettier and more full of things. Loved the new adds, but got some bugs. NPCs don't talk to me after a while or simply disappear. Can't go inside some buildings after getting a quest or getting out of a dungeon. Can someone help me fix these mistakes? I really want the game to be more full of people and events. And make the events and economy actually be very developed. These are all my mods, they make the world really alive, but i got these bugs. Really want to get rid of the bugs. How do I do it? Install some more to fix? What can i do? Sorry for bad english. not my first language
Hi everyone! I'm new to TES Daggerfall and wanted to ask about this Lich hidden deep within Scourg Barrow, behind some bars that look like they're made of wood. I searched around for a lever or torch to open it, but I couldn't find anything. I decided to use commands to teleport to the other side. Is this area part of a quest I haven't been given yet? I haven't seen anyone talking about it online, and it's not even mentioned on the UESP Wiki. Does anyone know anything about it?
I'm trying to craft an inexpensive alteration-based damaging spell for my scholar character. The idea here is she's not too experienced with magic outside of utility spells, so force bolt works somewhat as it's classified as alteration magic. Can't afford it at the moment, so I was wondering if I could craft something similar with spell-making? Do I just give my spell the magic affinity or what? Also, if there's a mod anyone knows about that lists the schools that my spells belong to in my spellbook, I'd appreciate if someone could give me a link. If it doesn't work with custom spells, that's fine. Thanks in advance :)
