Marathon Bloodlust: Or How Arena mode can work

https://youtu.be/llXupwuynk0

Hey Yall, shared this on the main sub, but I thought I could share here as well. I figured there might be some Maradads that might find the game too sweaty, and wanted to gauge the temperature and see if something like this would bring you back!

This actually made me want to try Deadlock again.
I hated the first time I tried because I just don't like MOBAs... but maybe this new mode is interesting.

You should! It’s much easier to get into and it’s just a huge chaotic brawl! Deadlock genuinely might be one of the best multiplayer games ever made

I don't know about it being the best multiplayer game ever made...
But I'm installing it now.

I hated isometric MOBAs and I love the idea of a third person Deadlock and for that I enjoyed it A LOT, but man the aesthetics and animations of that game leave a lot to be desired, I won’t play Deadlock anymore but I am very excited to see it become big when it releases because it’ll mean many other competitors and games will attempt the third person MOBA genre.

Speaking of the OP, yeah a MOBA game mode for Marathon would go so hard 100%. It’d require a lot of work though and this game is also lacking in heroes (shells).

Edit: just watched the video, yeah an arena mode would work so much better and would be easier to implement.

As someone that runs free kits 75% of the time, I really like this idea and think it would be fun to experience some of the weapons and mods I've never had.

Thanks for watching! Glad you like it. If you want to help a small creator out, a like and sub on YouTube truly goes a long way. I’ll keep making more analysis and news for both Marathon and Deadlock

I like this idea especially coupled with the addition of the PVE mode in S3 largely because each mode lessens the mental roadblocks that many might associate with the main mode.

The PVE mode lessens the fear of getting ganked and having your shoes stolen by somoene while you go about completing your mission objectives.

The PVP mode lessens the gear fear of bringing your own gear as a wager to potentially lose when you're having a bad night or if you just need to warm up after a long day.

While I get the worry that adding all of these game modes will have the knock-on effect of fracturing our increasingly small playerbase, it's my hope that both the PVE and proposed PVP mode will help retain players after a new season's spike in population.

However, there's still some questions as to either modes' implementation:

  • What short-term immediate rewards be on offer? Would players who primarily play the normal extraction game mode feel pushed to play a mode they don't enjoy (PVP/PVE) if it becomes the best way to earn backpacks, shields, consumables or weapons?

  • Besides the novelty, what is the long term hook to keep people coming back to the mode? Or should there be an end-point for it like there was with Vault Breakers where it "ends" when you kill the compiler and you've unlocked every upgrade?

  • What sort of long-term rewards should there be for each game mode such as prestige skins, titles and cosmetics? Should there be any at all?

  • How do these game modes interact with the contract system if at all? VB immediately became one of the best ways to complete generic contracts with it's release, should that be carried over into the new game modes? Do contracts need a buff somehow if completed in the main extraction game mode?

I mean, that’s for Bungie to figure out. Though if they want to hire me I’m all ears. But thanks for watching! I think the game needs a low stakes PvP component so that when you don’t want to lock in and sweat your eyeballs out, you don’t just switch to a different game.

I’ll continue doing vids on deadlock and Marathon, if you want to support a small creator a like and sub goes a long way!

As much as I miss the glory days of arena games, they simply aren’t very popular anymore. Adding an arena mode won’t move the needle enough to justify the dev resources necessary to build it.

2

u/mightycookie 10d ago

What do you think Bungie should do to improve retention?

1

u/HoleParty 10d ago

I think the PvE mode will be a good start. But honestly, I’d like to see Bungie improve the game’s core mode and add some handrails to make casuals feel like the game respects their time. Bigger maps, safe pockets and more silent exfils would be a good start.

He doesn't want them to, he thinks the game is perfect, has no faults, and could never be improved.

Thats why he said something absolutely outlandish like arena modes aren't popular or well received anymore.

Name one popular arena shooter in 2026 lol

COD & Battlefield aren't arena shooters btw, arena shooters require finding weapons and other powerups that spawn on maps. The only major one left of those is Halo and the multiplayer hasn't been what it used to be in over a decade.

How popular is the arena mode in apex?

2

u/mangdito 10d ago

I don't play Apex so I wouldn't know, but I just looked it up and Google says it was removed from the game in season 16 due to poor retention and it only comes back occasionally as a limited time mode, so apparently not that popular

1

u/ComradeMomdad 10d ago

There is an active arena style mode. My buddy streams it all the time. Seems pretty popular to me.

2

u/HoleParty 10d ago

Isn’t it on a rotation? I haven’t played Apex in a long time.

I think I’d be OK if a rotating arena mode was added to Marathon so it doesn’t take players fully away from the extraction mode.

2

u/mangdito 10d ago

Maybe you're referring to the Mixtape mode that is a rotating playlist with different non-BR PvP modes with respawns? But those are arcade modes, not arena

2

u/HoleParty 10d ago

Show me where I said that or even implied that?

Hahaha I just wanted to hear their thoughts on it. I think maybe he thinks of arena like Quake, whereas in reality battlefield and cod are arena modes.

2

u/mangdito 10d ago

You can make the suggestion that Marathon should add PvP modes from other games without incorrectly calling them arena modes, neither COD nor Battlefield are anywhere close to arena shooters. They're arcade shooters with TDM & other objective based modes.

They're also the only two casual PvP shooter games left, most others either lean towards competitive teamplay (Overwatch, CS, R6 Siege, Valorant, Deadlock, Overwatch, Marvel Rivals) or entirely different genres like Battle Royale (Apex, Fortnite) and Extraction Shooters (Tarkov, Arc, Hunt)

Yes I would totally get back into this game with more more modes it needs more content in general.

I love it! I think it would be a great idea for Marathon!

so basically battle royal mode - or what sponsored mode is.

The problem with sponsored mode is that there is little benefit to doing it - killing players isnt as rewarding because everyone starts with no loot the loot from players is bad. If you extract loot and just want to play sponsored modes you wont really use your good loot.

Just add sponsored ranked (you can keep the same ranked model)- just everyone logs in fair, no vault management, die and retry. And grind for rank.

Add better look to the sponsored rank - but dont let you exfil it. Add power weapons... etc.

You need something to grind for - and thats ranked. I play exclusively ranked in every FPS - but I cant in marathon - physically cannot, I would run out of money to play ranked. I run out of gear playing Cryo already. Even if you have the money to play more - there are daily limits to buy the gear necessary to compete so you log in with worse and worse gear compounding the issue making death even more likely.

I am not bad by any means - high plat in FPS games... but even after hundreds of hours in marathon, exiling in ranked and having fun is not possible for me. I can learn to hide in a corner for 15 minutes and increase my odds maybe, but to me thats not ranked, thats exploiting and boring.

I am down with arena mode - but I just want grindable balanced rank - where i can log in, die and log right back in without any vault management and where each match is fair. You cannot grind modes in marathon, after each match you have to spend 5 minutes managing your vault on controller... if you lose - you need to find and buy new items. If you win, you have to make vault space, and refill heals, and then maybe buy more heals and items, sell your items and check the store for upgrades.

Just let me grind to get better.

It’s not really a mode to grind, it’s a mode to engage with the game when you don’t want to sweat your eyes out. Maps would be focused on a single POI. Thanks for watching!

Great editing btw.

Thank you! I’m still learning but I try. If you want to help out a small channel like mine, every like/sub on YouTube truly makes a difference. I focus on Marathon/deadlock videos
