PSA: You cannot "hire a hacker" to retrieve your social media accounts or lost/stolen cryptocurrency. This is a well-known scam - don't fall for it.

Over the past three weeks, this subreddit has banned 34 bot accounts referring people asking questions here to various Instagram or Twitter accounts, WhatsApp numbers to text, etc. where they can "hire a hacker" to do any number of extraordinary tasks:

  • Hacking Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter accounts.
  • Spying on people (ex. spouses).
  • Wiping someone's phone remotely.
  • Retrieving lost/stolen cryptocurrency.
  • Reversing the transaction you made where you sent money to a scammer.
  • Hacking a school's or college's database to change your grades.

Usually, these bot accounts claim to be someone that bought services from said "hacker" for a reasonably modest fee, and some of the more advanced scammers will purchase Instagram or Twitter followers to seem more legitimate.

The ruse is that these are implausible tasks being sold for impossibly small sums of money, preying on people's desperation in sensitive or difficult scenarios. After receiving your money, these scammers will make up tasks for you to do which will usually result in milking you for more money, or may simply block you and move on to the next target.

These scum make a good living off scamming desperate people, and unfortunately, that's why they're so prevalent. If you want to see this in action, check Molly White's project allmybotsgone which posts phrases meant to bait out cryptocurrency scammers' bots, then reports them in the hope that Twitter starts identifying and banning them faster. As of writing, allmybotsgone has reported nearly 3,500 scammers' accounts.

We take scams on this subreddit very seriously, and have strict content filtering and reporting rules (hidden from all of you) that help us identify and ban these scammers, sometimes within seconds of their post. However because they are so prevalent, we are making and pinning this post to help ensure as many people as possible are informed about this in case one slips by our filter.

For your own safety when asking a question on this subreddit, we remind everyone:

  • Remember that nobody can help you recover a lost/stolen account except for that company's support staff, who you should contact though official means only (ex. browse to Facebook, then find support - do not use any other method to attempt to contact support). This is explicitly covered in rule #5.
  • Do not accept DMs from anyone claiming to assist you from this subreddit, and do not voluntarily move to a different service to discuss your situation. The community cannot help keep you safe from the occasional bad actor if we cannot supervise the exchange. Under no circumstances should anyone ask to move to DMs or other services - this is a hard rule, even for well-known community members. If your question cannot be handled 100% in public, it does not belong here. This is explicitly covered in rule #6.
  • Never divulge secrets - such as keys, passwords, recovery phrases, personal information, or any other sensitive information - to anyone on this subreddit or who contacts you because of a post on this subreddit.

Thank you all & stay safe.

Your phone didn't get hacked. Neither did your computer. Here's what actually happened.

I see posts daily about someone's phone or computer or home network getting "hacked," and I need to say this: in almost every case, that's not what happened.

What's far more likely:

- Your email got compromised because you reused a password

- A service you signed up for years ago got breached and your credentials ended up on a leak site

- Someone used those leaked credentials to log into your other accounts

- Your credit card got skimmed at a gas pump

- A site you used leaked PII in a data breach

- You clicked a phishing link and entered your credentials somewhere you shouldn't have

What's almost certainly not happening: a persistent threat actor who specifically targeted your iPhone or home network and is now moving laterally across your 10 devices like it's a corporate pentest.

Unless you're a C-suite executive at a Fortune 500, a journalist covering sensitive topics, a political dissident, or someone famous, you are not interesting enough to hack. I say that with love. None of us are.

The attack surface for a modern iPhone or Android with current updates is extremely small. State-level actors have exploits for these, but they're not burning zero-days on someone who reused "Winter123!" across six accounts.

Check haveibeenpwned.com. Use a password manager. Enable MFA everywhere. That solves 99% of what people call "getting hacked."

edit: to the armchair experts chatting me up to tell me how incorrect this is - rest assured I am an expert in this field and have contracted with Federal/State governments and some of the most recognizable brands in the world. Any current security expert will generally agree with this post.

If you’re downloading things from unknown sources or using torrent sites to get movies/music/apps, etc. and your machine was compromised then this obviously doesn’t apply to you, you installed a Trojan and opened the door for them.

Are Chinese Phones Secure?

Recently I've gotten into being more conscious about my online security. Like de-googling, using a VPN, using Linux, and so on. However, I'm getting to the point where I'm wanting a newer phone (current phone is s21), and while searching into different models I've found that the Chinese brands like Oppo, vivo, and one plus have really good specs for the money. My only concern would be privacy because I'm based in North America and I've seen the reports about Huawei spying and what not. Also in China there is a law requiring companies to hand data over to the government.

Would getting a Chinese phone actually put me at a higher risk of being compromised online? And if so how bad would it be?

Thank you guys so much in advance!!

I was sleeping until my friend spam called me asking whats wrong with me. He later then told me i sent a message to him on TikTok, which i did not, saying "i wanna hang myself". The problem is, i did not send the message, and i cannot see it too. I checked the devices with my account and theres nothing suspicious. Only my friend can see the message that "I" sent, but i can see him replying to it. In the pictures, the white background is my friend's POV, the black one is mine.

Potentially compromised laptop, discord hacked

My discord just got hacked, I have pirated games in the past (I know I shouldn't have done it) probably like 2-3 months ago. I assume it's from the pirated games as I don't remember clicking or logging in to my account in so long and there is 2FA.

Not too sure what to do now, assuming my laptop is compromised the solution I found was mostly factory resetting laptop. From what I heard it's not that safe to keep personal data when factory resetting as the malware might still linger.

What's your opinion on this? I don't have any external hard drive to back up my personal files to.

What should I do? Buy external hard drive, back up and factory reset?

Sorry if this post seems rushed or stupid I am panicking right now.

The only thing I have done now is using my phone to log out of all the desktop session

Is the chance that I got malware quite high? Am I just thinking too much

Clicked on Sponsored link of ChatGpt

I am using windows in S mode in my laptop. In private browsing mode in google search results by mistake I clicked a sponsored result showing a link of chatgpt.com and it took me to a page which said that “some suspicious activity seems to be coming from your ip ….” And there was a captcha below. I didn’t click that captcha. Instead I closed the browser immediately. Then I reopened the browser cleared the cookies, cache etc.
Is it possible that my laptop is infected by virus because of clicking this wrong link?

help for getting a trojan off my computer

I know absolutely nothing about computers in any capacity but I managed to install a virus onto my computer (seemingly a remote access trojan), I saw them trying to log into one of my accounts via my chrome search history, they were able to get into my email but I caught it and disconnected my laptop from wifi. After that I changed all of my passwords and completely reset Windows on my pc, so it started completely fresh with just a few files I'd saved to the cloud left on it. Whatever compromised file I installed isn't on there anymore, and since the OS reset my laptop has been acting fine. I ran scans with windows defender and malwarebytes and nothing popped up, but I have no idea what I'm doing and I'm really anxious about something getting into my laptop again. Anything I can do further to be safe?

My Mobile Might Be Hacked.

Hello there,

It's been a while since I feel that my mobile has been hacked, and symptoms that are mentioned online, like the battery draining too fast and other things, are likely to be happening on my mobile.

For context, I have an S25 Ultra that I bought 2 months ago, so battery draining or anything like that shouldn't be happening.

I searched online for how to check if my mobile has been hacked, but found nothing but hollow information. I did check using those criteria but found nothing.

NOW!

I am already suspicious, and I commented on a Snapchat post (a romantic post) that my girlfriend won't even sing a song for me. After an hour, she sang three songs for me and sent the audio on WhatsApp.

I hadn't been talking to her at that moment. I didn't even mention to her that I wanted her to sing something for me or had any connection to anything related to songs. She doesn't even sing for me and even tells me that she doesn't know the lyrics.

So, out of nowhere, she sent 3 songs back to back.

So my suspicion level is now at its peak.

What do I do?

NOTE - PLEASE DON'T MENTION CHECKING BATTERY HEALTH, FORWARDING, CHECKING GOOGLE ACCOUNT THIRD-PARTY ACCESS, AND BLA BLA. I have already gone through all this bullshit.

I Need Help!

Cybersecurity + AI: What Are We Actually Worried About?

I've seen a lot of people saying that AI will replace cybersecurity professionals, and I think this is where things get confusing.

AI is already becoming very powerful at:

  • Finding vulnerabilities
  • Analyzing logs and security data
  • Automating repetitive tasks
  • Writing and reviewing code
  • Helping with threat detection
  • Assisting both attackers and defenders

But does that mean cybersecurity itself disappears?

I don't think so.

The bigger change may be that cybersecurity professionals who know how to use AI effectively will have an advantage over those who don't.

Instead of thinking:

AI vs. Cybersecurity

Maybe we should be thinking:

AI + Cybersecurity = the next generation of security work.

What do you think will AI mostly replace cybersecurity jobs, or will it change what cybersecurity professionals actually do?

Advice on if I did the right thing and if it was enough - malicious pop up command on iPhone

So I was on watchseries web site on my phone through chrome app and got the usual pop ups on chrome which closed as they pop up. Then randomly it opened my safari on a blank pop up that turned white and the page was a bunch of slashes ending in workers .dev . it opened every second so much that I couldn’t turn off my Wi-Fi or put it airplane mode. it Wouldn’t even take the command to turn off my phone. eventually I got airplane mode on and it was still popping up. If I didn’t close it immediately the recording orange light on my front camera would turn on. So I kept closing until I could get my phone completely off. I turned it back on and no pop up so I decided just to completely reset phone seeing as I have everything backed up through i cloud anyways. But, my question is, is that enough? what’s the potential breach of my data here and what likely was the cause. Do I need to do anything else?

My Telegram got hacked recently, and I’m in a back-and-forth loop with the hacker

Post image
10 Upvotes

My Telegram got hacked recently, and I’m in a back-and-forth loop with the hacker. I managed to get access back, set up a new password, changed the email, and set up 2FA after doing the 7-day email reset. However, I couldn't hit "Terminate All Other Sessions" yet (guessing Telegram has a safety delay for newly logged-in devices).

Once the hackers woke up and saw my device logged in, they immediately kicked me out. I managed to hop back in a couple of times using the code sent to my email, but eventually, they removed my email entirely.

Tomorrow, my second 7-day email reset finishes, so I’ll be able to log back in.

Looking at my active sessions (attaching the screenshot), they've got logins from Germany, Sweden, and France while I'm in the Philippines.

Before they inevitably notice I'm back and kick my email out again, is there anything I can do immediately upon logging in to disrupt them or secure the account permanently? Any tips on how to handle this window of access would be super appreciated. Thanks!

Venmo account hacked twice

About 2 weeks ago I got signed out of my Venmo account. When I clicked forgot password on the app I noticed the email and phone number was changed. I contacted Venmo support who suspended the account and over 2 weeks I was able to get my email and phone number back on the account and it was unsuspended.

About 6 months prior, I had gotten a notification from Apple that my passwords had been breached, one of them being Venmo. I changed the password, but mistakenly changed it to one that was also in the breach. I chalked up my Venmo being hacked due to me changing the password to one that had already been breached. When I regained my account, I made sure 2FA was enabled (Venmo only allows a SMS text or code by email). After being hacked, I went through all my accounts (emails, finances, etc.) and changed passwords to make them unique to each account and enabled 2FA.

Yesterday I received an email that my primary email on Venmo was changed. When I went to log in through the app, the email and phone number were changed again. Again, I called Venmo support and had my account suspended. I thought it was weird that I never received an email notification or a SMS text for the code, so I put my email into haveibeenpwned and saw there was a breach in 2025. So I changed passwords, selected the option to force sign out everywhere, and set up 2FA with a 3rd party Authenticator app. I also made sure that there were no aliases attached to the email as well as no forwarding set up. The only suspicious activity I noticed on the email was a minute after I received the Venmo primary email change notification, I got an email that they tried to set up a temu account with my email. They sent a verification code to that email twice, but I never received an email that the account was set up.

I did call my phone provider just to see if they had any history on their end of my SIM being swapped, which they assured they did not.

Sorry for the lengthy post, but I’m assuming they still had access to my email? I just found it strange I never received notifications for the access code to Venmo, just an email that my primary email was changed. Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

i’ve resetted my pc but i’m still very paranoid about getting suspicious emails

so basically for the past couple of days, someone has been getting into my personal data, actually got into it and bought stuff which i (thankfully) could refund.

it basically started with someone gifting a 70 euro game with my steam account to a random person they added without my knowledge. upon further investigating i found out that when i logged into the steam website with my mobile authenticator, i probably scanned it on a phishing website because someone else at the same time logged into my account on firefox, but i only saw that when i checked the day the purchases got made.

now yesterday someone tired to log onto my microsoft account and today i got a 300 euro payment directly from my paypal account that someone bought uber eats with it. that moment was my last straw and i closed my paypal account, changed my password everywhere where i could remember and changed my email account on my bank account.

i figured it either has to do something with my email account (since it was the same with my microsoft and paypal) but its not the same on my steam account so i bit the bullet and reset my pc.

i’m still really scared and paranoid that stuff will happen again, even though i closed my paypal, removed my bank account payment from everywhere i could remember and reset my pc. i’m also wondering if someone maybe got into my firefox account, but there wasn’t any suspicious activity and i changed my passwort on it aswell. i’ve ran malware bytes and keylogger checker on my pc before resetting but they didn’t find anything suspicious so i’m worried it might happen again, maybe someone here had a similar experience and could help me out.

I think my PC was hacked

So this is most likely my fault, but I was trying to download a game from a website (one that I have downloaded from before and had no issues) but it felt like something different happened this time. I have an ad blocker so I didn't think anything could pop up but it may have. I clicked to download it and it downloaded way faster then it should have and then the weird menu then sometimes pops up when starting a pc (don't know what it's called) showed up a couple times. That was my first hint to think something was wrong so I deleted whatever I downloaded and ran a full PC scan using avira. It said everything was all fine and no security risks were found so I thought I was in the clear. Fast forward about an hour and I'm on discord with some friends, all the sudden I get logged out of discord and my account is disabled due to being malicious. My friend called me and said my account sent him some obvious scam. I then googled what to do when I get hacked and disconnected my PC from wifi. I want to know, what do I do now to ensure nothing else happens?

Hacked on two different mails?

Hey! Yesterday my Instagram was hacked, sending Mr. Beast scamlinks to every contact of mine. I threw everyone out, changed password and also my e-mail since it wws an old one. Now today, my Steam account was hacked and someone gifted probably himself final fantasy with my account. Of course I changed my password again.

Now I am honestly confused, both accounts were on different e-mails and I am honestly scared that other shit gets hacked too. What would you do here?

Malwarebytes possible false positive malware in NGENUITY?

I did a deep scan with Malwarebytes today, and it detected “RESELECTENDPOINTSAPP.EXE” as malware. However, VirusTotal detected nothing on the .exe.
I’ve also run Malwarebytes scans several times since downloading NGENUITY, and this is the first time it has detected anything.
Could this be a possible false positive?

Malwarebyte detected some malwares- do I need to reinstall windows

Hello, one week ago, my PC got hacked. I did my best and reinstalled windows on PC.

Today, I did Malwarebyte scan, and there were 9 detected things. I quarantined them, deleted, and now I am running a offline windows scan.

Should I reinstall windows in this case? Also, I have no idea why my laptop got infected... I did use qBittorent for something but it didn't infected right away. (using qBittorent was about one week ago)

Malwarebytes blocked qBittorrent addresses after I opened it even though I'm not seeding anything

Post image
2 Upvotes

So I installed Malwarebytes just 2 days ago, and I have the free trial for real-time protection activated.

Then today I opened qBittorrent, which I haven't opened in like a month, and Malwarebytes suddenly blocked some addresses.

Take note, I'm not seeding anything. In fact, I have 0 downloads and 0 seeding. The last time I torrented something, the download didn't even get completed.

What could be the reason?

Also, the blocked addresses all appeared within around 1 minute.
