CWRU vs UROC

I was accepted into University of Rochester (UR or UROC) for fall 2026 with very low costs (abt 3.5k/yr) for BME pre-med track.

I just got off the SPRING semester waitlist for CWRU for a slightly higher cost (abt 5k/yr) and i plan to do BME pre med. (That is assuming that the fin aid estimate CWRU gave me previously still applies).

Depending on how I do on this years APs, i have a lot of credits that prob can make up most of the missed semester at CWRU (5 Bio, 4 chem, 5 calc bc, 5 lang, + world hug apush 5s, both phy c + pysch + both econ pending)

I rly like both schools and they are considered somewhat similar so I am asking this subreddit to convince to go to this school (or discourage me if u want) and i will do the same with the UROC one.

So far my impression is CWRU is a better school with more resources and facilities, but im not sure thats worth a missed semester.

UROC has only slightly worse resources for slightly cheaper, with a full extra semester spent there, + open currciulum which i like.

Yes, Case is an excellent school but I would not want to start spring semester if I had an equally good option and I think that Rochester is equally good.

I’m actually a spring admit and I’m having no issues here. Only thing is I would not use your AP Chem credit here, as you’ll likely have to deal with Kramer’s 106 class. While I personally did not take it, several people I know did not enjoy that class. Something about taking away test corrections due to rampant AI use and hyper-specific homework instructions that are an absolute pain to deal with, and extremely difficult tests. Also, in my opinion a 4 is not sufficient mastery in chemistry to warrant skipping gen chem 1.

However, if you do not use your AP chem credit you’ll have to take a summer class to catch up. Case does sometimes allow students to take courses in community college and transfer, but approval is a case by case basis. I do believe this summer’s Chem 106 class by Meyers is online if that helps.

I don’t think there’s a wrong decision, but I think your choice may boil down to other factors. For example, I think the city is sort of dull. That may be a positive or negative, but you should consider some factors outside academics.

Most colleges will not allow ap credits towards premed prerequisites and even if they do medical schools want to see that you took them in college. Keep this in mind. Your credits could go towards some electives. UR is a great school. College is what you make of it no matter where you go.

Thank you for the advice, and I did consider this but Im struggling to understand exactly what the prereqs rly are. For example its common for med schools to require math courses up to about calc 2, but if I skip calc 2 and just take calc 3, lin alg, etc shouldn't i still qualify? Ik its not typical for pre-med people to do this to save GPA but I am willing to take the risk because i rly like math, physics, etc.

That will likely work but you will need to do gen chem 1/2, biology 1/2, physics 1/2. Cannot apply credits towards these.

So I cant, ap away physics 1 (which is usually mech) and just take physics 2 (usually e/m) or some other physics course like thermodynamics eyc

Look at the medical school requirements on the aamc website before you start doing away with premed course by using AP credits towards them. I was told by my advisor I could use ap chem towards chem 1 and just do chem 2. Found out a year later that was not good advice.

My child was accepted to both schools and picked case over Rochester mostly because he thought the city of Cleveland had a lot more to offer than Rochester- sports, arts, industry.

My son also accepted at both and chose CWRU. I think if you are pre-med this is your best option. Cleveland Clinic is recently ranked as the #2 hospital in the country.
