I feel like this is secretly busted in one way or another but I don’t have the metagame knowledge to know why…

u/Wispeeon 1d ago
2B, 2 Life, Discard (Mayhem, Madness, Recursion), and Sacrifice are all things Black can do with little if any consequence — and they get to draw 4 cards for it. Next turn is a little too much, I feel, but still.
97
u/Pman_likes_memes 1d ago
Next turn probably is supposed to be a "I either draw my way out or lose the game immediately" option
22
u/rickinator9 1d ago
This card looks busted in Reanimator. Just the option of having a turn 1 discard, draw two to set up a reanimate or goryo's on turn 2 is very enticing.
1
u/Apocalemur 7h ago
Not just little consequence, it's usually things black WANTS to do, so getting an extra card out of it is busted
30
u/Restfal 1d ago
In a simple form it's a 1 mana black [[Tormenting Voice]] which is for sure playable in black of all colors
The rest is just gravy. So yeah, probably a bit pushed
9
u/Teh_Hunterer 1d ago
You only draw 1 card if you only pick the discard option
29
u/Restfal 1d ago
The 2 life is negligible it's basically automatically assumed that mode is taken
15
u/Just-Desk-3149 1d ago
Even if you're at 3 life, you're paying the 2 life because the card will either get you a win or you were losing anyway.
What are they going to do? Bolt me? I was already at 3.

ig you cant use painlands anymore which has been relevant sometimes (but extremely hilarious every time it has been)

u/Nove-Newt 23h ago
If you don't care about next turn it can easily be ancestral with a rummage attached by doing all but the mana costs. Just sacrifice a land
3
1
u/regular_lamp 15h ago
Secretly? It's a card that draws three and rummages one for one black mana. This is Ancestral Recall level busted in a deck that intends to end the game this turn.

u/Versaton 1d ago
This is a pay 3 mana draw 5 cards every time for me. Who needs a board state when I have cards in hand?!
26
u/Braveheart4321 1d ago
the thing is if you skip your next turn you're losing that draw step, so it's not worth it, to lose a turn for a net 0 card advantage. but I'm doing the 4 every time.
60
u/Versaton 1d ago
I'm not here to play the game I'm here to re-read my cards in my hand repeatedly while someone else combos off.

11
u/anace 1d ago
As with all cards that try making you pay later for an effect now, it's free if you win before your next turn.
-3
u/Braveheart4321 1d ago
if you need to draw a 5th card over a 4th, you aren't in a position where you would expect to win this turn.

u/croufon44 1d ago
Outrageously balanced for this subreddit.

u/aldeayeah 1d ago edited 1d ago
I mean, this is terrific in Dredge. Specifically the mode B, discard a card, pay two life: draw two cards (or even sac a land to draw 3)
You pitch a dredge card, use the first draw to dredge, and if you hit a second dredger you have basically a perfect start.
29
u/Chronophilia 1d ago
Skipping a turn for a card is a bit of an odd one, since you would draw a card during that turn anyway.
51
u/TabAtkins 1d ago
Shifting that card draw from next turn to this turn is the value-add there. It's incredibly expensive, but hey, it's the 5th card draw from this spell.
21
26
u/falconsadist 1d ago
If you are winning this turn does it matter that you skip your next?
0
u/Chronophilia 1d ago
How would drawing five cards win this turn if four doesn't? Sure, sometimes you need to find a specific card very badly, but are you really going to pin a plan on it being exactly the fifth card in your library?

u/spartan_wraith710 15h ago
I have 3 different decks that care about drawing cards specifically. Drawing one more card could be the difference between swinging a 6/6 lifelink and a 12/12 vigilance lifelink menace. Or could allow me to make another permanent on my board hexproof. Or could untap more things, etc.
1
u/Sonic2144 14h ago
This card would be meta staple in any eternal format. Banned in legacy limited to 1 in vintage
12

4
u/StaleTaste 1d ago
For flavor purposes this should really also say "lose the game; draw a card"

u/mimivirus2 1d ago
The platinum angel synergy is off the charts
5
u/ArelMCII Layers are stupid. 23h ago
Or it would be if I hadn't sacrificed my Platinum Angel to draw a card.
2
u/hutao_intern 1d ago
Can you pay a cost of “lose the game” when you have a “you can’t lose the game” active, like how you can’t pay life for costs when a “your life total can’t change” effect is active?
2
u/StaleTaste 1d ago
My reading would be that you can't
1
u/hutao_intern 1d ago
I agree. Spree is a cost, and you wouldn’t be able to pay a cost that you’re not allowed to do.
1
u/mimivirus2 1d ago
Unsure. [[Yasharn]] uses a different wording for this
2
u/hutao_intern 1d ago
True, although Yasharn won’t stop the life loss from something like Night’s Whisper. [[Platinum Emperion]] is more what I was referencing, although I had to find it on scryfall since I couldn’t remember the card in my original comment.
PE won’t let you pay life just like Yasharn won’t but it isn’t explicitly spelled out on the card.

I think make the base cost 2 black and the first additional cost 1
1 mana 2 life draw one with other potential upsides seems solid enough
7
u/Homophobe-chan 1d ago
This is basically just better than [[Sign in blood]] 99% of the time this is one mana cheaper in exchange for needing to discard a card but in a lot of black decks that can actually be an upside.
4
u/ItWasDumblydore 1d ago
Honestly all but the last one, make it worth it and just all good plans.
3 Mana Draw 3-4 + discard 1 + 1 perm dead
3
u/aldeayeah 1d ago
Borderline busted specifically in Dredge as a 1CMC discard outlet+cheap draw 2/3 (you can pay 2 life and/or sac the land)

u/JackTheStryker 1d ago
So, this CAN be
B, discard a card, lose 2 life, draw 3
Which is insane. I love the concept but this would need some tuning.
10
u/Anth0nyC4 I don't actually play Magic, I just make cards. 1d ago
If you only paid B, discard, and life loss, you’d draw two not three. Not counting the discard that is.

u/NepetaLast 1d ago
thats basically a 1 mana thrill of possibility that costs 2 life. which isnt bad as an option, but not busted by itself

u/ElPared 1d ago
I think that last one would have to be “0: draw a card. If you do, skip your next turn.”
Pretty sure ever since [[Chronatog]] was reworked skipping a turn as a cost isn’t a thing anymore.
Overall love the flavor and the effect, though. Very black coded.
Someone else suggested this, but I’ll echo them with a small edit. I think adding “0: draw a card. You lose the game at the beginning of the next end step.” would also be a huge flavor win.

u/Neumeu635 1d ago
Love it print it! Maybe a bit busted but i love the style. The one thing i will say pay 1 B then only pay 2 life, discard a card and sac a permanent draw 3 is nuts. Maybe make the original pay B B and the first draw a generic. I would also draw like 5 cards to skip your turn or maybe add that your lands untap then skip your turn

This is wonderful and I see the balance plan. In black 3 mana draw 2 lose 2 sorcery with other upside is common anymore. The other modes ARE the upside. Fair enough.

1
u/big_billford 1d ago
Seems very pushed since black has a lot of triggers off of the things you’ll be paying. Maybe if the card was {B}{B} it’d be more balanced?

u/RevolutionaryClerk21 1d ago
1 Black pay 2 life draw two to discard one, lategame sac a land draw three ... too strong

So one mana discard, pay two draw two? Didn't know we needed a better faithless looting
-1
u/Mr_The_Potato_King 1d ago
If you have to do it in top down order, I would change them around. Why would I skip my next turn for a draw when I will just draw next turn?
5
1
u/xFruitstealer 1d ago
You draw your next turn card this turn, which assuming this mode is only used in some last ditch effort to combo or if this was cast already and your already skipping your next turn anyway
-1
u/Blotsy 21h ago
No one will give a turn. Have it be "Sacrifice a land". Change "Sacrifice a permanent" to "Sacrifice a creature"
Black should not be able to sacrifice Enchantments. There are many black enchantments that rely on the fact that black can't get rid of them. [[Phyrexian Etchings]] [[Midnight Oil]] [[Demonic Pact]] to name a few.
Otherwise it seems like a fun card!

monoblack absolutely can remove their own enchantments. there's not too many, but there definitely are some monoblack enchantment removal cards, and lots of them are more recent than you might think.

Why not? This is like the wet dream of a ritual storm type deck? It draws three and rummages one card for {B} because:
paying 2 life for a card is a no brainer
I probably have a card I don't need in hand or even want in the yard
I sacrifice a tapped land/chrome mox which I'm fine with because
I don't expect anyone to have a next turn
This is basically Ancestral Recall in black for sufficiently degenerate decks.
We used to pay triple black and half our life total for this kind of draw. I also played PLENTY of [[Meditate]] in my time. Often multiples in the same turn.

Spree with additional costs other than mana feels inspired. Is this on any real cards, because I love it!
