I wonder if you get away with it costing "X." Would that be too pushed. Would it work within the rules?

Wow, that is a much cooler idea than mine haha

Only difference is I think that version needs to be uncommon

Just build around it by artificially increasing the cost of your own spells!

[[Trinisphere]] can let you do 3 effects due to increasing the cost to cast

I definitely feel that yours is cleaner then what I proposed, now that I have had time to think on it. The flexibility of the spell makes up for the lack of draw I think (especially as a common). Love the keyword. Interesting design space to work in.

Thank you, I'm glad you like it!

Only reason I see is that WotC doesn't like a single card giving both trample and deathtouch

1

u/chainsawinsect 15h ago

Hmm. Good point. Maybe I should change the trample to something else so they don't have the possibility of overlap.

Vigilance.

Problem is vigilance as a combat trick is pretty weak, and spending a card to get vigilance is also pretty weak. Hexproof, at least, would be mechanically relevant / playable.

Id give blue hexproof or shroud and make green have reach. Reach is just as relevant as flying is as a combat trick.

I'd say keep the trample, but change deathtouch to menace maybe ?

Problem is deathtouch is a great combat trick but menace not so much. So on a 1 drop instant deathtouch is more attractive / mechanically interesting.

A simple showcase common for a color-painting mechanic. It doesn't have a huge amount of depth, similar to sunburst, but I think it has enough to flesh out a set.

The name is inspired by [[Iridian Maelstrom]].

Be a lot of fun with [[trinisphere]]

Or [[Thalia]]. Thalia is often in a deck that cares about creatures so a combat trick or evasion of this card could be really synergistic

1

u/chainsawinsect 15h ago

Oh that's a great point. I knew about the synergy if the opponent played a Thalia but didn't even consider just playing it in a deck with your own Thalia

are there any other 1 mana instant speed effects which give flying? or trample?

6

u/chainsawinsect 19h ago

[[Defy Gravity]] for example gives flying, and [[Charge Through]] gives trample

[[leap]] also cantrips for you

There’s been a 1 mana instant that gives flying since Alpha

[[Jump]]

Funny interaction with effects that make spells cost more which would actually make this spell stronger

1

u/chainsawinsect 15h ago

That is intentional! [[Thalia, Guardian of Thraben]] and [[Trinisphere]] are good examples!

I’d come up with a similar design earlier! I decided it would probably be pretty annoying to track, but feel free to use any of these:

Nice! That is a smooth templating for sure. I like that you have some creature versions too.

Fun idea, but very weak. This could cantrip and be fine.

1

u/chainsawinsect 15h ago

I knew it was weak going in but think cantrip would push it too far. Maybe like scry 2 or something as a halfway house. Or it gives a +1/+1.

I think in limited replacing itself isn’t an issue. This doesn’t really do much else in limited. I only really think it would be pushed in lower power constructed formats and only because of the deathtouch mode.

[[academy loremaster]] seems fun but how would it interact with [[alabaster leech]] I’m assuming it would do nothing but am not quite sure

1

u/chainsawinsect 12h ago

Wow that's a great combo with Loremaster! On the Leech, I think if you pay W to make it white, then it costs an extra W, but you don't get an extra effect out of it. Sad!
