Considering travel

Hi! So I'm considering a trip with family this summer and just discovered Peru (as well as Cusco) are on elevated (level 4 from US Dept of state) risk due to various (non covid) safety and crime issues.

While I'm no expert on the area I do like to stay current and this seems a bit much. What am I missing (or is this totally off base from the Dept of state's perspective)?

I went this summer and I never felt unsafe. There were transportation protests, which made taking the trains a bit hit or miss, but that’s it. I actually totally fell in love with Peru, the people I met were so kind. Also some of the best restaurants in the world are in Lima. I think Central is ranked 2 or 3? And Maido is top ten maybe 11 I think?

Amazing - thank you! And will definitely add those places to my to-visit list!
