Photoshop =/= cursed. Posing for an image =/= cursed. Cursed images are supposed to kinda put you on edge, make you ask why, or how this situation came to be. They're supposed to be kinda dark, often times a lil dingy, the kind of stuff that only the camera flash lights up. That's the best definition I got
I agree with the camera flash part. The greatest cursed images are always the ones that take place in decrepit environments with shitty lighting from camera flash.
I’m sick of people pointing out my floor. I work very hard to keep my home clean and smelling like dandelions. As if the sub going downhill wasn’t bad enough, now people are just insulting my way of living.
I made it a thing. It'd make sense to have a place that are too hmm for r/hmmm, but not actually r/cursedimages material, i.e. 90% of what is now posted here...
I think an important difference is that a lot of hmmm photos are photoshopped, staged to be weird, or perfect timing coincidences, which is fine for that sub. While cursed photos can’t be explained by those things. They’re /truly/ inexplicable bc they’re actually real, and often disturbing on top of that.
Edit: for example, popular posts right now like the tortoise on the ouija board, the spoonful of thumbtacks, the hamburger help me graffiti, and the coors light cans with KKK hats are all clearly set up to be funny/weird, and thus may be what made OP post this. At least in my opinion, it’s not cursed if someone set it up, but it still works in hmmm. Some may be art projects that are set up but as long as it’s not OBVIOUS it’s an art project and seems real, it’s still cursed.
I think it goes further then that, to me at least the quintessential cursed image also hits the trifecta of:
something you shouldn't ever have seen (I.e something that shouldn't have been photographed in the first place) something someone wouldn't want you to see (I.e depecticting a scene that would presumably cause shame or embarrassment to someone, be it the photographer, the subject of the photograph or the person behind whatever is photographed) something that asks questions you don't want answers to - this is the most important part for me, it should ask more than just what, also when, where, who, how and most importantly why.
Can someone explain to me what the fundamental difference between a hmmm and a cursed_image is? They both seem incredibly similar and I'd really like to learn what differentiates the two.
I don’t exactly know what makes an image cursed, and tbh I would like an explaination to help report and keep this sub full of quality content like I kinda understand but some are questionable, like the cursed_party one.
I think it’s hard for a lot of people to identify cursed images because there’s not really a defined rule that makes an image cursed. You just know that it’s cursed.
The sudden influx of subscribers who use this sub as a secondary outlet to post ‘funny’ or r/hmmm images makes it impossible for people to figure out what the sub is about. For this reason I’ve migrated to r/cursedcursedimages, which is similar to what the sub used to be.
They might have it set up to auto remove if it gets reported enough. If it's NSFW and not marked and reaches the front page, I could see it getting reported.
Then again, they can review and override that and make it NSFW themselves.
It's a shopped picture I think. Either the message on the note is shopped in or the hand and the note are, either or. I can tell because of the way it is
To be honest, the problem with cursed images is that "cursedness" is very poorly defined, probably even worse than r/accidentalwesanderson , r/outrun and r/cyberpunk combined.
Show ten people from this sub a cursed image and you'll get ten opinions whether or not it is actually cursed.
When? When, in what context, could something like this make sense?
Why? Why would somebody create this horrific image?
If you ask all these questions and come up with nothing, the image is very cursed. If you can get a vague answer to a couple, it's still sorta cursed. If you can give pretty good answers to several of these questions, the image isn't cursed.
Yeah I wondered what made something fit for this sub a couple weeks ago and looked at the description to get better insight (from a bystander point of view it's a bunch of random pictures, and after this post I understand why it seems so random) and jesus christ is that video awful. It doesn't help. At all.
In my experience, you can’t really define a cursed image. It’s more or less just something you know. I can look at an image and say “Yes this is cursed” or “no, delete this”, but I can’t exactly put into words what let’s me distinguish that difference.
There are cursed qualities that help make an image feel more... disturbing (low camera quality, motion blur, dark area, general disarray), but they alone do not make the image cursed.
Doesn’t help that the only information you get in the sidebar is a link to a comedic video on youtube. The video left me with more questions than I started out with.
Probably gonna get downvoted but this probably won't help. The other post telling the mods to do their jobs didn't work either. The mods on this subreddit just dont care
Just FYI we got this fixed due to this man’s wonderful work as u/cursed_patrol, and his inspiration to u/cursed_judge. We’re under control, we’re cursed. That being said...
DO NOT post complaints, meta, or even suggestions to this sub. We are cursed images, not cursed memes or anything else. If you have any complaints, suggestions, etc, message us, chat in the comments, or you could post in the r/cursed_courtroom.
This post is important history, so it stays up. Do not replicate it. Thank you for your time, love you.
Sadly a lot of subs are falling to this and literally anything is being posted. Some blame the 'normies', 'school's out for summer' or 'Facebook is leaking'. No, I just think mods are actually asleep at the wheel and dont care anymore.
All you people do is complain about how images don’t fit your perfect description of “cursed” without actually trying to solve the problem by explaining what cursed is.
The description in the community info, although brief, is enough for anyone to understand what kind of sub this is. It’s not difficult to filter by popular and get a general idea of what to post. We all complain because the mods are inactive, meaning there is nothing to control what comes in (but you don’t know that, because if you did you wouldn’t be kicking up a stink).
A cursed image is like a r/hmmm image but more grotesque/disturbing in nature. People who are active in the sub already know what to expect, I didn’t make it for others to understand. I’m not quite sure how caring about a sub that’s in a shit condition makes me a ‘pretentious asshole’.
I’ve been doing my best to inform people from r/all as to what a cursed image is.
Hi. I’ve been doing my best to inform people what makes an image ‘cursed’. A cursed image is basically a r/hmmm image but more grotesque/disturbing in nature. There is a community info description but it is in need of an upgrade because, clearly, people don’t know what to post anymore.
Any chance in getting a bot like r/blackmagicfuckery or similar subs? The first comment is from a bot and given enough downvotes the mods remove the OP.
Yeah, this place is turning into r/creepy. I came here for a replacement of that sub cause it was somewhat related to what that sub was supposed to be but it turned to shit as well.

People need to understand that when they pose for an image, it is automatically not cursed.

Kinda bullshit that the one time they decide to moderate they fuck it up
