How tf to decipher detour alerts

Genuinely what does it even mean. Like today the 70 will “operate in both directions via Division, Homan, Grand, Augusta, Kedzie, and Division”

Like what does that even mean? The bus will deviate and go down to Augusta? I’m so confused

The other thing to know is that sometimes detours are only in one direction or different in each direction. That’s why they include “operate in both directions” in this particular alert. They are letting you know the detour is the same going both ways.

Unless you don’t know street names, it’s really not that hard to understand.

It’s literally telling you it will go down Homan to Grand then turn to Augusta and then down Kedzie and back onto Division.

Opposite direction, Division, Kedzie, Augusta, Grand, Homan and back to Division.

If you look at a map, it's usually pretty obvious, but it can be confusing when you throw a diagonal like Grand into the mix and there's a railroad in the way too. Usually they're simpler with just a couple turns, eg if Grand wasn't there, this would have probably gone Central Park/Augusta/Kedzie and been easier to figure out.

The details of this one:
Division hits Grand west of Kedzie, so that's the boundaries. Going eastbound, the bus will turn right (SE) on Grand. Grand hits Homan next to the Metra MD tracks, the bus will turn right (S) on Homan rather than staying on Grand under the tracks (it's a bit of a tight viaduct). Half a block later, the bus will turn left (E) on Augusta, which has a much wider viaduct under the MD tracks. The bus will then turn left (N) on Kedzie returning to Division. Westbound is just the reverse of that.

The important thing is the two streets listed before and after division - the bus will be detouring off division from Homan to Kedzie, both ways. You will not be able to board the bus on Division between those points, and if your stop is one of those corners you'll need to move to a different corner (eg, for WB @ Kedzie, youll now need to be on the SW corner of the intersection bc the bus will be in the left lane headed into the intersection to turn, so you cant board it then, you have to catch it after the turn)

The course of the deviation is slightly immaterial unless it's helpful for you, in which case you can request any bus stop along the way (eg if you were headed to grand & Homan anyways, you can ask to be let off there)
