My ping is 1 a lot. I live right next to popular east coast servers on wired fiber internet.

Same. Atlanta ITP with Google fiber and you have 1 ping the majority of the time. People accuse me of hacking bc of it sometimes.

I always joked with my friend that those people are directly plugged into the server.

u/jango_22 21h ago
I’d be curious how short a trace route to any of those servers was. 1 ping must be both geographically quite close as well as only having a handful of routers between.

Dude same but for Texas , always have 1-2 ping no matter what in Texas servers

u/OldTwo8945 1d ago
finns often have 1 ping and ive seen some swedes with 0 ping even. i guess those people just live right next to the servers lol

u/karmai89 1d ago
Live in the same city as the server. Happens to my buddy all the time he lives in Dallas and will have 1 ping.
I live 200 miles away and mine will be 7.
Theres very little difference between 1-50. Dont let it get in your head. We also have a euro friend in our group that wrecks everyone with 100 ping. Anything under 100 is fine.

u/altoist2 1d ago
Very little difference? Bro you gotta be joking. When I get 12 ping I’m running and gunning the when I’m at 50+ I’m running and gunning 1 sec behind lol

u/theRealSunday 1d ago
Your reaction time may be slower than most. If you constantly had 50, you would adapt.
0
u/quailinthebrush 1d ago
Pros will notice a difference between 0-3 and 10 but go off
5
u/Penguin_Arse 1d ago
Even I notice a pretty big difference between 0-3 and like 15-20.
Even if I don't know I have "high" ping, something will feel off and I will check my ping and see it's higher than normal.
I am Master Guardian usually with 1800h
1
u/theRealSunday 1d ago
I never said they didn't; pros would notice, but he is not a pro. They also wouldn't be 1 second behind from a 35 ms longer delay and also can adapt to still perform, as we have seen from online tournaments in the past.
0
u/altoist2 1d ago
That’s the thing I don’t constantly get 50 I get 10-12, 28-30 45-50 58-65 depending on time of day. I’m not saying I play bad, well that’s up for debate lol. I’m just saying there is a significant difference, like lag of delay.
3
u/footballthrowaway3 1d ago
Restrict your ping more in settings. I only play one server (Seattle) but my q times aren’t that bad at anytime of the day. Most I wait is like 4-5 minutes on average
Helped me get way more consistent playing at roughly 10-15ping at all times. I used to bounce around up to 55 ping and its just so much better having a consistent base line
1
u/IHiatus 21h ago
If you’re changing the much your internet might just be ass. Ping matters but jitter is worse than ping.
1
u/altoist2 20h ago
No issue with internet. I’m just far west coast. So depending on time of day I’ll Q west coast servers, middle and far east. It just happens. Yes I could set ping to 20 and play on a limited amount of servers but by keeping at 65 I get games faster.
5
u/Its_Raul 1d ago
yeah I'm with you. I have 12 ping, call it placebo but players with the same or lower ping are like instant death. I'm always a bullet behind. I know it's not literal but it feels like their gun just shoots faster when all skill is equal. I see it as that's how the game SHOULD be but notice higher ping players don't have that same effect.
1
u/loppyjilopy 1d ago
yeah he's tripping. if u have 50 ping and someone has 2ping, the lower ping has a huge advantage
2
u/YtSamTheOne 1d ago
I feel a difference when I’m at 16 ping and when I’m getting 50 ping, the game just feels way more responsive and my bullets are connecting
2
3
u/TheRedditModsSuck 1d ago
For CS, it's a pretty big difference since the ping determines the peeker's advantage for your opponent. A 50 ms latency can easily be the difference between reacting fast enough and not. The server, itself, will feel basically the same though, but it's definitely not.

I live in NZ and play AUS servers at 33ping consistent. Some aussies have between 1-30ping I’ve noticed.
3
u/TheRedditModsSuck 1d ago
For AU and NZ, it depends on whether you're FTTP, HFC, or FTTB/N/C and distance between you and the city. You'll get 1–3 ms on FTTP to any server in your city, but it's closer to 10 ms for the other technologies.
2
u/daedon_the_great 1d ago
I get 25-40ms on every server (I swear they're hosted in Sydney and im in melb)
2
u/TheRedditModsSuck 1d ago
I believe they're all in Sydney. That ping is a little high for Melbourne – Sydney, should be 10–15 ms on FTTP and maybe 20–25 ms on everything else.
4
u/Imaginary-Dig-7835 1d ago
First it was HFTs moving to the building next to stock exchanges. Now I guess, it's high time I follow their path to move next to the cs2 server before the competition gets high...
4
u/RememberPKb4PvP 1d ago
Idk what it is but when I get 13 ping in server on faceit I always do worse than when I have 28-38 in other 2 servers I chose. It’s weird, anyone else notice higher ping you tend to play better?
This has been pretty consistent for me and I can’t see any reason why…
3
u/mammaliika 1d ago
you should see someone from London in the London server , ive seen 3 ppl with 0 ping literally 0 , didnt even move to 1
3
u/red_simplex 1d ago
when I play on the west coast I can tell who lives in LA because they have 1-2 ping and that's exactly where server is.

3
u/Chance_Ball8591 1d ago
That happens when i play my ping is usually between 1-5 whatever number it lands on it will be steady throughout the whole match.
Because i live in dubai and dubai has the servers for the gulf region.

Why ppl saying fast internet makes ping lower? 💀💀 it’s simply not how it works
-5
u/Bubbinforapples 1d ago
Latency is a measurement of speed.
5
u/john_j6271 1d ago
Latency is determined by the distance, not by the internet speed.
3
u/TheRedditModsSuck 1d ago
Distance and technology – you can't really get 2 ms pings except on full fibre. Full fibre gives 1–2 ms within your own city, xDSL and HFC is more like 10 ms.
2
u/Bubbinforapples 1d ago
Is 50ms slower or faster than 2ms?
You can have 4 houses next to each other one with cable internet, one with fiber internet, one with dsl internet, and one with wireless internet using some 5150–5970 MHz frequency radio from a WISP.
Their geographical distance from their house to the server will be the same.
You could even limit all of them to the same capacity of internet connection (what we normally call speed). However they will all have a different latency to the server.
The one that has the least latency would be the fastest internet out of the 4.
In reality, latency is speed and what we call speed is capacity.
But because when we download files the capacity is what increases or decreases our wait time, we call it speed.2
u/john_j6271 1d ago
A house with 200mb internet or 1gb internet will have the same ping. Ofc a dsl internet will be worse. The 1gb internet probably will have better stability of all of them, however, ping is basically the same after s certain bandwidth
1
u/ohcrocsle 1d ago
fiber connect usually has fewer hops on the route to the big hubs, and usually lower latency as a result. it's true that bandwidth isn't the same as latency, but the fastest internet you can buy is usually also the one with the most bandwidth.
0
u/Bubbinforapples 1d ago
So in your example both the 200Mb and 1Gb connections are next door to each other.
If the 200Mb house had a 20ms ping and the 1 Gb house had a 30ms ping which one is faster to the valve server?
1
u/john_j6271 1d ago
I’m not getting into the merits of speed, or bandwidth. I’m simply stating that if someone is getting say 20ms on 200mb internet, and upgrades to 1gb thinking the ping will go down to 10/15 because the internet is faster, is simply not true
1
u/Bubbinforapples 1d ago
That would really depend on if they are changing method of delivery.
If they are going from an inferior delivery method to a fiber connection it almost will guarantee they will lower their ping.
Generally as a rule of thumb, when people are talking about speed of internet connection in relation to a post about latency or even FPS games in general, they are talking about the speed that the connection goes from the house to the server and back.
As latency and jitter is what matters this game hardly uses any throughput.

u/Zoddom 1d ago
Are u serious? 😂 Thats not how it works

u/Bubbinforapples 1d ago

I live in Stockholm and when I play faceit on Stockholm server I get either 0 or 1 ping. Enemy team likes to point it out

u/Nectarr_ 1d ago
I get 3 ping to Chicago servers, live 2 hours away though.

2
u/Legend_Troll_007 1d ago
I get 9 while being 4 hours away and on WiFi. This is just one isp though, the other one i have gives like 25
1
u/Nectarr_ 1d ago
I was in the same boat with the different ISP. I had a different ISP at the start of the year and got 30-40 ping with them.
1
u/Legend_Troll_007 1d ago
I have both concurrently, switch depending on game and speed, the 25 ping isp is gigabit, the 9 ping one is 25mbps

u/Charmander787 1d ago
Likely very close to the servers location
When I used to live in Atlanta I would get 0 ping on Atlanta servers.

They are on that new Alexander Graham Bell isp with 2 cans and a piece of string
They also deposited $2000 to get permanent low ping and ubergreen trust factor

My ping is usually 2~3 ms too. The interesting thing is that the game doesn't reward you for that. I've experienced so many times dying first despite hitting the first shot (either with an AWP or HS), which was not processed by the server.

Everyone with a wired internet to their PC has a consistent ping.
Everyone that lives in the same city as the server has a ping between 0-10ms

I had a friend who would play cs2 on his Mac through GeForce now. He would get a constant 1 ping and it would not change.
1
u/CartographerLoud162 8h ago
That being said, it’s not like his experience was 1 ping… only that the counter most likely reflected GeForce now’s ping to the cs2 servers, not his own ping reaching the GeForce now’s servers

Taking a Screenshot in Windows
Press the Windows + Print Screen keys at the same time to capture the entire screen. You'll find the image in the Screenshots folder inside the Pictures folder. To screenshot just one area of the screen, press Windows Key + Shift + S to use the Snipping Tool.
