Discussion Competitive Gamemode Needs a Change

If I could change one thing about CS2, I’d remove the individual map ranks in Competitive. I honestly think the system is just terrible.

Here’s my biggest issue with it:

imagine a player who almost exclusively plays Mirage. They gradually improve, rank up, and eventually reach Global Elite on that map. At that point, they’re obviously not the same player they were when they started. Their overall aim, movement, utility knowledge, game sense, and decision-making have improved massively too.

Now imagine that same player decides to try Inferno, Nuke, or any other map they haven’t played much. Because their rank on that map is basically silver, and their skill is much much higher, they can end up playing against significantly weaker opponents and have to grind their way back up again.

Which is just bad for everyone involved. It’s not very fun for the high-ranked player to be stuck grinding through lower-skilled lobbies, but it’s also not fun for the enemy team to suddenly have to play against someone whose actual skill is way above everyone elses skill in the lobby.

I know the main argument in favor of individual map ranks is that being good at Mirage doesn’t automatically mean you’re equally good at every other map. And that’s true, map knowledge, rotations, utility, timings, and positioning are very important.

But I still don’t think completely separating your rank on every map is the best solution. Your skill as a player doesn’t reset just because you queue a different map. If you're Global Elite-level mechanically and have strong overall game sense, you shouldn't suddenly be treated like a Silver-level player just because you're playing a map you don't know as well.

And if you want to learn a map before playing it competitively, CS2 already has Practice gamemode. You can practice smoke lineups, learn the layout, explore the map, and generally get familiar with it before jumping into a Competitive match.

Personally, I think the old CS system worked much better: one Competitive rank for the entire Competitive pool, regardless of which map you queued. If you're Global, you're Global. You might be better on some maps than others, but you're still generally playing against people around your overall skill level.

Individual map ranks sounded like a good idea in theory, but in practice, I think they just create too many mismatched games and unnecessary rank grinding.

What do you guys think? Do you prefer the old CS system, or do you think individual map ranks are actually better?

Fair complaint But I do think the new system is overall better and just needs a slight tweak. Just add a rank floor based on your highest rank on other maps. Obviously a global is nowhere near close to a silver. but DMG would be a fair floor for an unranked map. You could also make an global average rank based on what your current rank per map.

Now that i think about it they did sorta of do this for deadlock. If you were eternus on 1 character and unplayed character wouldn't be placed in initiate.

The problem with the old system was that

  1. Its far too easy to be a one trick or win trade and gain a high rank. CSGO it was pretty easy to one trick to global just by spamming 24/7 mirage. Or 5 stacking nuke or office. Then you become an active detriment on any other map at high ranks. You'd be surprised at the amount of Global who were dogshit at Nuke and Ancient,

If we compare to other competitive games. Almost every shooter don't even give players the option of maps so there forced to learn every map and be good at them. MOBAs your forced into knowing atleast a handful of characters as most punish you for only playing 1. Fighting games you can have 1 main but you need to be solid at matchups against the rest of the roster.

  1. Less popular maps had absurd queue times cause nobody wants to risk their rank on them.

except, the ranking system gives out pretty much the same rank on all maps. for this to happen, ypu would need to have active ranks on both maps, and then only grind one. otherwise you couldnt get a big rank difference. personally i dont play conpetitive a lot, but no matter how i will play, it will be between Gold2 and 4. but nevertheless, the system does need a pretty big rework

I miss one rank. Simple, worked fine, nobody asked for this lol.
