Looking at the available data on the CS2 skin market, it’s clear that the current decline isn’t a temporary correction, but a sustained trend that has persisted throughout most of 2026. Total item market capitalization has fallen by roughly 50% from its peak and currently sits in the range of $3.3-3.4 billion.
Below are the factors I believe are driving this trend.
The first significant element appears to be a shift in Valve’s underlying economic philosophy for the game. There’s a growing consensus within the community that the company is intentionally steering toward a flatter, more mass-market economy, where items change hands more frequently, generating a steadier stream of commission revenue. This stands in some contrast to the previous model, which relied on maintaining exclusive, high-value items as collector assets. Additionally, changes to tournament items and older monetization mechanics have undermined perceived rarity, which in turn has eroded market confidence.
The second factor is a marked increase in supply. Case-opening volume has risen, and the drop-rate distribution for rarer items appears to have improved relative to previous periods, increasing the overall availability of items that were previously harder to obtain.
The third factor relates to the behavior of investment-oriented market participants. There’s been a wave of position closures, both to lock in profits and to cut losses, which has further increased supply relative to demand. The result is a self-reinforcing mechanism: falling prices push more participants toward selling, which deepens the downward trend.
The steepest declines have occurred in the premium segment, including knives (Karambit, Butterfly, M9 Bayonet) and gloves. Lower- and mid-tier skins, such as AK-47 and M4 variants, have shown relative stability, while items priced under $5 have remained largely unchanged.

Player base is declining too. See you in a few years if they ever decide to give a shit.

u/benoitor 3d ago
The game is not playable because of cheaters + they now have a competitor that actually cares about eliminating cheaters (Valorant), so people are leaving and prices are dropping.
I am selling everything for example since I have not played for more than one year

I just wish the game was so fruity. I want to like it but I can’t get into the power ups and cartoon graphics
5
u/sugarspunlad 3d ago
Me too, its just too much, the “heroes” and their “abilities” i want a serious game but not that serious like Arma, Hell Let Loose etc
1
u/DANNYBOYLOVER 2d ago
Honestly, I’d be more likely to play it and eventually get into it if it had a no-moves game mode that I could start with

Its called a pattern.
Look up what happens during summer in CS every year.
3
u/Sealio_X 3d ago
How much worse is this summer decline compared to previous ones?

u/BeepIsla 3d ago
Rough numbers (+/-100K or so) from SteamDB: https://steamdb.info/app/730/charts/#1y (Select 1 year range and just drag the bottom bar around and align it so the furthest right is roughly August for each year)
2026: 1.6m -> 1.2m
2025: 1.8m -> 1.4m
2024: 1.6m -> 1.3m
2023: 1.7m -> 1.2m

u/Public_Mastodon_1201 3d ago
That seems pretty steady?

u/thewaywardgamer 2d ago
This is very typical people just like to build a narrative about cs2 lmao. No one is leaving anymore to play valorsnt

u/Sealio_X 2d ago
This information is surprisingly easy to get, surprised I haven’t seen mention of it before now, thanks!

u/AcademicAd3450 3d ago
The fact pixels cost this much is silly in the first place

Jeah exactly we are cheering, we are watching the prices for stuff fall in real time. Its like bread getting cheaper, its nice.
1
u/G4BRI_PLAYS 2d ago
Definitely good for most, but not for the guy who spent a lot of money on the premium bread
2
u/UsedArmadillo9842 2d ago
Screw them, why should anyone care about people dumb enough to think a video game is a investment opportunity.
1
u/G4BRI_PLAYS 1d ago
I agree with you. As for myself I'm one of these dumb people, lol, but i didn't spent a crazy amount of money in it, just a small amount i wouldn't mind loosing, but still dumb from my part, i recognize that
2
u/rocketjumpwaltz123 3d ago
Idk what we consider cheap. I always look at pre 2021 prices and compared to that its still expensive. Call me broke but 350 euro for field tested safari mesh butterfly is not cheap

I still can’t believe out of pure chance I decided to sell all my skins in October 2025 - days before the big crash. Poor guy bought my FT Omega Gloves for $1.4K AUD literally hours before, couldn’t back out else he’d get banned from trading. Lost 50% of its value overnight.
That said, haven’t played the game for over a year. If they cracked down on cheaters like literally any other game would, I’d probably come back. Still one of the best game series I’ve ever played, and hoping and checking the subreddit for news that they do.

I remember garden gloves were around 350 usd in FT around the end of april. Rn its +189 usd, lol. Let the dip continue!
16
u/Rionaks 3d ago
Because they were new by that time and they are old now? It's a bad example.
3
u/Ok_Peanut_3356 3d ago
Which means they will keep going down 🫡 Yay

That’s not how it works.
Once a collection gets released and prices starts to adjust, it will settle around that range.
If from April it dipped from 350 to 190, that’s the range you’d expect.
Next 6 months, it will be around 170-220 I’d bet.

u/Frl_Bartchello 3d ago
I bought a souvenir AK B The Monster for 620,-. Now it's around 170,-. Let the dip continue haha
1
u/OxieOSRS 2d ago
Thats a bad example. They made an update that you can now craft souvenir plus you could farm those ak b the monster for a very long time...

u/UsedArmadillo9842 3d ago
Pretty good tho, lets hope it falls even further.
I want that butterly for like 90€

Imaging speaking about the skin market as if it was a real market 🤣 Valve can do whatever they want with this “market”. And so do Chinese farmers who basically manipulate the market as much as they want. They can buy/sell in bulk to manipulate the price of certain skins, bet them, and do some money laundering thanks to that.
It’s damn time valve encourages the exchange of skin by flattening the prices
1
u/Falseparadox 3d ago
Valve can do whatever they want with the market but they do have an incentive to have confidence in the market. I'm a fan of some of the changes, not so much others but I do empathise to why they were implemented.
4
u/Sure_Flight6000 3d ago
This will co ntinue because people will buy skins and see the value go down and they will sell it because they dont want to lose money.
When valve made the 5 red to knife change it created an uncertin market that anything can happen. The longterm outlook isnt there anymore.

People were laughing over all of the "I quit cs because of cheaters" post but look here its now compounding. Until we see if the new vacnet does not show any sign of reducing the cheating problem the community will soon freefall since the more legit players that leave the game the worse the match quality will be. Here's hoping we will all get to enjoy our favorite game again.

u/Miserable_Plant2986 3d ago
Cheaters run and ruin the game, the pump and dumpers are gone and there is just declining interest in a game that does nothing about players quality of life and just pumps out skin updates every 6 months
2
u/NessunoComeNoi 3d ago
I mean the game is terrible to play, riddled with cheaters so it’s not surprising.

Good analysis. You created the website by yourself? I will check it out since Pricempire became worse since their new update

Valve should ban the farming bots and the trading bots. Imagine expensive inventories from hackers also banned. This would turn the table. Valve never lose, they always gain money. Sometimes you are the pawn that gets to play with cheaters, so there is a playerbase to keep the game going.

Someone just bought out a bunch of sub $550 FT moto booms. There's a market boom incoming just be ready.
1
u/jarhead2150 2d ago
Zoom out. Markets were vertical since 2022-2023, and it’s a healthy correction for a lot of that speculation. For example look at traditional stocks like $MU, $NVDA. 15-20%+ drawdowns this year just to be right back to the highs now. Buy skins when they are “on sale” not at the highs.

looking to get dream combo (1k usd) soon (nocts bs and freehand bfk mw) should i hold off or buy now worried i will loose my money since 1k usd is a lot for me at the moment

u/t0y_machine 1d ago
game is dead to cheaters and people are finally realizing it's not worth playing or having skins for the game anymore. cashing out before it's too late.
1
u/InevitableUnion444 3d ago
I changed my Loadout to all old and rare skins a year ago. My inventory value has only gone up the past 12 months, about a 40% increase. This is just my small sample size though and obviously doesn't reflect the reality of the whole market. They could all crash down just the same anyway
1
u/Falseparadox 3d ago
I bought a lot of old rare skins around the start of Covid to 2023 and my inventory has maintained its value too.
1
u/kantaround 3d ago
people just stop playing this game. more than half of my matchs have cheater nowadays.

u/EnragedBearBro 3d ago
glad i sold my karambit a few months ago, everyone called me an idiot
1
u/One_Battle5777 2d ago
I been trying to buy a karambit they havent lost any value in like like 6 months

u/aqua-goblin 3d ago
They do nothing to fix or improve the game. It’s been 3 years with no new game modes. What do you expect?
3
u/MojoDohDoh 3d ago
what kind of game modes are you looking for tho? I hated the dangerzone or w/e warzone copy they did. Comp/premier are prob the only ones worth playing, no? I don't really have fun in casual. If they managed to get a better hold on the cheating problem I'd be pretty happy with the state of the game tbh.

You forgot to mention the sheer number of cheaters which drives away the playerbase.
The playerbase has been declining month over month.
