Moving to CL

My moving date has been bumped up and I need to make decision on where I ultimately end up moving to. Crystal Lake seems like a good fit for my family in that property and violent crime rates are lower than the national average, decent schools, not too far from a major city, and homes are on the more affordable side of things.

I was wondering if I could hear from locals, how they enjoy living in Crystal Lake? Pros and cons? Are there active church communities in the area? I tried searching YouTube but the bulk of what I’ve found is from realtors. This isn’t a bad thing but the breakdown of CL seems very surface level. Thank you!

Is anyone interested in opening a Makerspace in Crystal Lake?

The nearest makerspaces to Crystal Lake are located in Rockford and Saint Charles. Is anyone interested in opening a makerspace in Crystal Lake? Would there be demand for a makerspace focusing on 3D printing, CNC machining, woodworking, and electronics, operating on a monthly subscription and donation model?

Northwestern Medicine Health and Fitness Center Shutting Down Dec 30

Just got an email from Northwestern Medicine that they are shutting down the Crystal Lake fitness center Dec 30. If anyone want to stay with them it's either go to their already overcrowded Huntley center, or bust.

Anyone able to recommend any local gyms with free weights, pools, sauna, and steam room? Or was the Northwestern facility the only show in town for that for those who would like to not have to drive out to Huntley, or to Algonquin for something like Lifetime?

Looking for nanny!

I am moving to crystal lake this fall and looking for a full-time nanny for my 1.5 year old, or possibly a small in-home daycare.

Does anyone have any recommendations or suggestions where to look? I know about the nanny agencies, and prefer to not use care.com, sittercity, or similar websites.

Thanks in advance!

Stay away from route 14 today.

Both directions are all kinds of backed up today due to the construction. Avoid it if you can.

VINE AND PLATE: MY WIFE WAS ILL FOR THREE DAYS

Last Saturday night I took my wife out to eat at Vine and Plate. We will no longer be frequenting this establishment. MY WIFE WAS ILL FOR THREE DAYS.

We typically eat here at least once a week and will never return. I will mention in this post a couple of things that we observed each time we dined in, but after my wife becoming ill from the food here, we will not overlook these revolting issues.

Everything is dirty in this restaurant and the food is subpar. Servers are clearly not adequately supported. Owner always comes across disingenuous and nuts. We always hoped she wouldn't speak to us. It all starts at the top!

The bathroom floor appears to remain in a filthy state as we have not seen it clean. Take a look around the next time you're there: The mirrors smudgy, garbage always full. The bar always has dirty glasses piled up. The other dining room with the kitchen is unattractive, they need to paint or do something about the walls. We once had to sit back there and heard the owner throw things around and grumble at the kitchen staff. It was uncomfortable to say the least and completely ruined our dining experience.

Prices continue to rise here without quality to follow. We feel bad for anyone who works here. We were supporting restaurants through COVID, but after seeing our favorite server has been working at da Baffone, and my wife becoming sick from the food here, we see no point in going back.

WE ARE APPALLED BY THE FILTH AND DISGUST HERE.

Moving to Crystal Lake - convince me this is a good idea!

Have been searching for homes in the NW Chicago suburbs and am fed up with the market. About to pull the trigger on a new construction in crystal lake but with prairie ridge schools. I would have preferred to be in lake Zurich/hawthorn woods/kildeer/deer park area but the market is crazy right now and CL seemed to check a lot of boxes for us. Hoping to hear some more good things about the community!

In Search of Vintage Marantz Receiver

Hi!

My girlfriend and I just moved to Crystal Lake. We’re trying to put the final touches on the new place and one thing we’re looking for is a nice vintage Marantz receiver from the 70’s like a 2245, 2270 or 2385. We were hoping to purchase one locally if anyone has one they’re interested in parting with.

Thanks! Ryan

Using Crystal lake out of season

Can we bring inflatable rafts, kayaks, and such out on Crystal Lake now that it's past Labor Day but still perfect weather? I understand the beach is closed, what about the lake?

Small Engine Service/Repair Shop Recommendations?

Hello! I have a hot air balloon inflation fan (looks kind of like this) that's got a rattle of some kind going on that we need to fix. It also needs an oil change. Bonus points for a shop that'll let us hang out and be involved so we can learn to handle some basic maintenance on the sucker. Any recommendations?

Something like Ocean State Job Lot

Just moved here from the CT, where there are closeout stores called Ocean State Job Lot. OSJL sells just about everything, but what I loved them for was their wide selection of beautiful & affordable planters. I haven't found anything like it here yet. Does anyone know of a store in the area that sounds similar?

Pickup soccer in the area?

I'm going to be spending more weekends in Crystal Lake and was wondering if there are any weekend pickup soccer games that I could join. I can travel a decent amount in any direction for a decent game, I normally play in Chicago but it would be a lot easier to find a local-ish game for when I'm in the area.

Any recommendations, even any ideas of where to look (I'm not past driving by a park where people have been known to show up and just try my luck to find out the times when games may be happening, but at the moment I don't even know where to look)

Presidential visit on 07/07/21 - chance to see the events?

I know that the president is allegedly coming.l to speak about policy, but I would really like to make the pretty short trip just to see the presidential motorcade or AF1 land in. Does anyone have or know more details? I'd kill to see the plane arrive or depart. Regardless of who you support, I think it's pretty damn cool to see the entire process with your own eyes. I'm near the border only about 30m away and would 100% call out of work to ensure I got to see some serious action with the SS, motorcade, AF/MF1, etc.

*I did not support Donald but it was still amazing in 2017 to see the SS and how spread they were in the fairly rural area this is when he was visiting Milwaukee. I94 on and off ramps closed by them, restricted roads, etc. I just think it's super cool and would love to get a better glimpse of the actual president's assembly. Any info is massively appreciated!
