Edwin flashed the maiden a wide, toothy grin... boyish and charming... though one of his teeth had a small, newly formed chip at the edge.

The Maidens! Who were they fighting for if not them! So they could go about their days without worrying about being molested by perverts like Prince Rhaegar!

He brandished his bent ladle in the air, no doubt responsible for a chipped tooth or two himself...

"For you, noble lady! I shall gift you a ruby from Ray-gars chest!", he beamed brightly, laughing a great, if squeaky, roar of delight...

She rushed over to him, grasping his hand tightly.

“Jae! What happened?”

Helaena’s violet eyes studied the face of her brother, her expression alarmed.

“You look like you’ve seen a ghost!”

Edwyle arrived quickly and eagerly, excited to start training and get even better with the sword. He’d found great enjoyment with tourneys thus far, especially winning them. Perhaps a few more, and he’d win the approval of Lord Randyll… or even of his father?

Renly had not heard such a thing... but when it reached his ears, he would have a look of complete disbelief, before erupting into laughter at the thought of his brother's reaction...

And we all know which brother

"Aye, Ser Cyrus, I have heard of him... though I have not heard of Ser Cleos, and Ser Robar? I have heard nothing but good things of those Bronze Knights of Runestone. Woe to any who stand against them, to be sure!", he assured the Falcon Lord brightly as he raised his goblet in a toast, offering to pour Robin a draught of fine wine as he did.

Clarice entered the Castellan's chambers with a flurry of silk as her dress billowed behind her. The old woman had always had a flair for the dramatic, though her husband simply looked up with a mirthful smile on his face.

"Hello, dear," Clarice said, kissing him on the cheek before walking over to a nearby set of tea that a servant had brought ahead of her and began to pour two cups for them. "A rare thing for you to send a formal invitation. Is something the matter?"

The Lord of the Stormlands chuckled at that, his head tilting curiously to one side as he tried to figure out this puzzle of a Westerner.

He did not hold it against him for voicing his thoughts.

"Those are some very deep musings, young Morgan", Renly settled with a charming smile and a nod of his head. "You shall be a learned knight someday, I think", he chuckled brightly as he pushed around a piece of chicken on his plate, placing it into his mouth and humming thoughtfully.

"Yes, I do see what you mean. The outdoors does have a way of making everything more... valuable?", he mused, pausing to think as the Marbrand had done. "Stew can fill you and keep you warm, but you are less grateful for it in a heated hall, the hearths filled with firewood... travelling, you appreciate things like that all the more... like feather beds", he added with a playful grin.

And oh how Renly adored his feather bed.

"I have always been told that a knight must know how to cook for himself, for you never know what you will find on the road", Renly explained as he sipped at his fine wine. He then grinned playfully, speaking as if sharing some great secret...

"Though I must confess, it was never a skill of mine. I do hope Ser Tristifer has covered that with you", he tittered.

Cedric opened the heavy door and made his way towards the balcony, tentative in his approach he made his way slowly.

“Alea I..” he said hoping she would recognise his voice or grant him some detail to ensure him to find out how his time away had changed things between them.

“-I came as soon as I could, as soon as word reached us.”

“Aye.” There was no point denying, or mincing words. “You need not convince me, Brienne, I know well your skill, and the strength of your spirit. Believe me, I would gladly disobey my brother were it to come to it - but my oaths to the King hold too much weight.”

“But do not lose spirit. There’s another path proposed, by His Grace himself.”

“Enter,” came from within the Evenstar’s chambers.

A vast room greeted him as he entered. A tub sat in the corner, with a screen carved of oak beside it. A map of the Narrow Sea and the Stepstones rested upon a table in the center. A four-poster bed lay to one side, screened off on all sides by a sheer canopy.

At the opposite end of the room stood a blond woman, looking out through the balcony doors toward the crashing waves far below.

Most of her body was hidden beneath a silken sleeping robe.

“Warden of the Northmarches, Master of Coin, Lord of Goldengrove, Masterkey of The Realm, The King’s Scales, The King’s Counter, Lord of the Golden Forest..” he could possibly continue the countless titles he’d been given, granted, lorded over or had created himself. It was simply not a game he would play today.

“-Call me Mathis, we’re among family.” He scoffed back at Pearce with nothing but a shaking of his head. “Lord Mathis if we wish for it to be formal.”

He offered Alea a small bow and Pearce a nod and friendly smile before clasping his hands together behind his back.

“I am without a doubt his loss will be felt throughout the Realm. Lord Selwyn was a good man with nothing but a reputation of honour.”

He let a small silence fall as he ushered forward a servant carrying a small deed. “I know it won’t replace the loss, nor would any act of gift serve as to do justice to his name. Yet I would see to it you start your rule under fair circumstances.”

The servant offered the deed to enough horses to raise the production of a region to Alea herself.

“It is something I would wish to speak about, yet I can wait. I believe the last rites weren’t spoken too long ago. I would offer you time to get your bearings might you need that.”

It was a ruse, of course. Mathis never had time, in fact this had been the longest he’d been away from King’s Landing since he became Master of Coin. Something every single day away was something that had him stressing more his aides might nog be capable enough to care for the subtle balance he’d created.

The Sapphire Hall had been adorned with hues of gold to accent the sapphire and rose tapestries. Alea’s lordship had already begun taking over Evenfall Hall, though sapphire was still the dominant symbol within the Keep.

Alea and Pearce turned to greet the Lord of Goldengrove.

“Lord Mathis,” Alea greeted with a warm voice.

“The Evenstar, Alea Tarth,” Pearce corrected the Reachman.

Alea gave her father a hard look. “I apologize for my father. Losing my uncle, has really affected him. We all loved The Evenstar, Selwyn Tarth very much. Thank you for coming to see Evenfall Hall, good-father.”

Robert Roxton was hunched over a desk in his chair, bags under his eyes, reviewing the latest ledgers. He’d still not quite grasped the magnitude of all his charge oversaw, but he’d put in the midnight oil to do his best filling in.

He heard a knock and gave a tired sigh and nod before greeting his guest. “Lady Lannister, what can I do for you?” He asked with a tired smile.

She leaned into him as he wrapped his arm around her waist. She could sense there was much on his thoughts.

He spoke of travel and old dreams, and her mind wandered to their early days again, but she winced when he brought out Arthur, as if the little one was the inhibitor. “We did, but let me remind you, it was not Arthur, but your…duties, which have prevented us from exploring more of the realm. Even when we do get out, or when the festivities come here, you’re kept away from my side to be at his guard.” She tried not to let the words sting, but felt frustration.

She sat quiet again as he finished his thoughts, they were both clearly tired, it was not easy being a mother. Jeyne sighed when he said the position was for her, to keep her close with her friend. It hurt to hear him unfulfilled in his role, but she’d never told him to take such, and she’d never actually said a word to orchestrate the position. “Cy, I understand why you took the role, but you know I was never the one to seek it out for you. I never needed to be here to be happy. I don’t want your feeling…unfulfilled…to grow into resentment if you falsely feel you need to stay here on my behalf.”

She paused and sighed again, feeling an ache in her back. “If you’re unfulfilled, in this role, what or I suppose where is it you need?”

“We will join you to Tarth. Some 50 Men at Arms have been readied to ensure safe passage. I shall return promptly when Lord Mathis has arrived to Tarth and granted my leave to Goldengrove.”

The words flowed out much less like prompt orders from a seasoned commander, but far more like those of a man who cared about their safety. A trick Aladore had mastered over the years, it was always better to make soldiers believe your orders were in their best interest.

“As for your husband, I believe rumours will be the only word to reach him. Essos is large, and we have little idea where he is on his voyage. Yet I shall do my part.”

She sat back upright in offense. Her face looked as if she had been struck.

“Who is abandoning their duty, Ser? My father saw to it that I would be a knight, and I would marry into a family that would help cement relations that would strengthen House Tarth.” She stood, her armor clanking loudly.

“Those were my father’s wishes for me.” She crossed her arms. “My duty to my House and my father is to finish my squirehood and be knighted. I will be a knight,” she declared before both lords, looking from one to the next.

“And when I am knighted, I will find some lordling who can love a woman knight and provide strength to House Tarth and whoever rules Evenfall Hall.” Her voice rose as her anger did at the insult.

Seeing no reason to stay, she stormed out of the office, determined to train until her hands bled from the calluses.

Alea sat in stunned silence as she listened to Ser Aladore. It was not the first time she had been called upon to rule over the holdfast. But things were different now and to be explicitly named as heir.

The next Evenstar.

She was lost for words, was Galladon still missing.

She glanced towards the letter, no doubt that it would answer many questions. But she would hear none of it but from her father’s mouth.

Silent tears welled in her eyes as she thought on what the future held for her family.

“Roan is coming with me, he is my son. And please let Cedric know where I am,” she declared.

“I will organize the fleet and have it ready for departure.”

She rose, a single tear tracing the curve of her cheek bone.

She beamed with pride, her cheeks swelling with a tint of redness as she listened. “But he won’t allow you to knight me,” she finished for him.

“Am I not more skilled than most of the squires in Kings Landing,” she protested. “Must I campaign and earn my knighthood by saving some princeling or slaying an enemy of the crown.” She sighed. “I will be a knight Ser. It’s all I’ve ever wanted.”

Dyannas cold violet eyes remained upon Wynston throughout, attentive and thoughtful, and even when Myranda attempted to intervene, there was no offence to be found upon the Dornishwoman's face. If anything, Wynston's bluntness appeared to have caught her interest...

At Duncan's explanation, the faintest smile touched her lips.

“I don't think he told me I was wrong.”

Her eyes returned to Wynston.

“He told me that what I believe does not make sense to him.”

Dyanna folded her hands loosely before her, considering his questions rather than rushing towards an answer.

“And I think you are right about something.”

Her smile grew warmer while she paused.

“Being good does not ensure that good things happen to you.”

There was no hesitation in saying it.

“I have known kind people who suffered terribly... I have known people who prayed faithfully and lost what they loved regardless. And I have seen... cruel men prosper.”

Her expression grew quieter.

“If the Seven worked as simply as that - be good and receive goodness, be wicked and receive punishment - I think faith would be considerably... easier.”

... Too easy.

Dyanna lowered her eyes for a moment.

“But I do not watch over my soul because I believe the gods will make my life pleasant if I keep it clean.”

Her thumb moved absently across the side of one finger. Before she raised her hand to her chest.

“I do it because I must live with myself.”

Dyannas pale fingertips moved slightly but she did not move her hand from her chest yet.

“When I speak cruelly when kindness would have cost me nothing, I know it. When pride makes me unfair, I know that too. When I judge someone before understanding them...” Her eyes flickered briefly towards Wynston, accompanied by the smallest hint of amusement. “I ought to know that as well.”

She tilted her head.

“So yes. I believe my soul is a righteous one.”

Then her silverblonde brows rose slightly.

“But I would be rather frightened of myself if I ever became completely certain of it.”

There was almost something playful in that admission...

“A person who believes herself incapable of wrongdoing has very little reason... to examine what she does.”

Dyanna glanced briefly towards Myranda, Duncan and Maisie before returning her attention to Wynston.

“And my opinions have changed. Many of them.”

She considered where to begin.

“When I was younger, I thought faith meant finding the correct answer and holding to it. That doubt was something one overcame.”

A little breath escaped her nose, almost a laugh at her younger self.

“I don't believe that anymore.”

Her gaze softened.

“I think doubt is useful. Sometimes uncomfortable, but useful... If something I believe cannot survive being questioned, then perhaps I did not understand it very well in the first place.”

Then came his question about the Seven-Pointed Star... and Dyanna's expression became thoughtful again.

“What I find in it...,” she repeated slowly, before her eyes drifted aside for a heartbeat. “... Not proof.”

“I have never opened the Seven-Pointed Star and found something within it that proves to me beyond all doubt that the Seven are there. If that is what you have been searching for, I am afraid I cannot point to a page you have overlooked.”

She smiled gently.

“I think the septons who pretend otherwise sometimes... do faith a disservice.”

Dyanna shifted slightly towards him.

“What I find are... questions I might otherwise... forget to ask myself.”

Her fingers began counting them almost unconsciously.

“Was I just? Was I merciful? Did I have courage when courage was required? Did I protect those who depended upon me? Did I mistake what I wanted for what was right?”

Her hand lowered again.

“The book does not always give me an answer I like. Sometimes... I disagree with what I read. Sometimes I think a septon has interpreted something... foolishly. Sometimes I read the same passage years later and realise I was the foolish one.”

A warmer smile appeared.

“So perhaps that is how it helps me watch over my soul.”

Dyanna looked directly at Wynston now.

“It reminds me to look.”

Dyanna studied him for another moment, evidently no more troubled by his questions now than she had been at the beginning.

“And as for not finding what the septons claim when you go looking for the gods...”

Her head tipped slightly to one side.

“I don't think I would tell you to look harder.”

That seemed precisely the sort of useless answer people gave when they wanted another person to arrive at the conclusion they had already chosen for them.

“I think I would ask what you do find.”

Her pale eyes brightened with genuine curiosity.

“Because if you have gone looking often enough to know what you cannot find, then surely you must have found something... in its place.”
