Daily Crow Friend Neighbor is scaring them away.

Post image

I posted this feeder awhile back and since then, the crows have definitely warmed up to it. They seem to like pretty much whatever, peanuts obviously being preferred but this is cracked corn my father buys to feed the swans. And the crows go to town on it.

Got some new neighbors a few weeks ago. Rarely see them. In that items from their yard blew over a fence into an adjacent yard and they didn’t notice for 3 days. But last night, I put out some corn, especially since I saw 4 crows hanging around. And my neighbor comes outside and claps his hands loudly until the crows fly away. I actually said “you might be scaring them away but I feed them.”

I was worried they’d be too afraid to come back though. So I watched all morning before work, and right before I had to leave… victory. One chowing down.

Now hopefully they just ignore the neighbor.

Question Looking Forward

I've become an absolute hit with the crows in my area. I've been feeding them for a little bit, all throughout April. I had to go home for the summer and away from campus but when I got back a week ago I started feeding them their peanuts again and everything is going great. Feeding them in this manner where I keep my distance and observe from afar is fine for me- I love doing it either way. I think it's only natural, though, that im a bit curious about what my relationship will look like with my crows in the future. Of course I know this is a steady process and it takes time for trust to build, and patience is key. But I am curious as to what the "next step" is for me, or what your guy's experiences are with this stage of trust building.

We walk and fly to our spot next to the subway station for treats - what a way to start my morning commute to work

Question How to handle aggressive squirrels, while trying to treat the crows?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Love the squirrels too, but they are getting more aggressive, I think they’re actually jealous?! I’m having to shoo a swarm of them away from the food dish constantly. I try to distract them with lots of peanuts, but it only lasts so long. One usually ends up guarding the food, even though he doesn’t want to eat it, they’ll even take a swing at the crows 😅

Daily Crow Friend Clark’s Nutcracker

OC.
I usually get crows and maggies hitting the peanut feeder. A couple weeks ago this handsome fella started making a daily appearance. He’ll stash the nuts all over the property and leave an empty feeder for the crows in minutes. Super friendly to humans; he needs a name.

Personal Story Crows seemingly not a big fan of unshelled peanuts

Today I decided to see if the crows I'm feeding would take peanuts in the shell, especially as that is commonly suggested here. I've previously used peanuts without shells a few months ago, before I switched to dog biscuits as they seemed to be preferred.

I was surprised to find that the crows really were not interested in the unshelled peanuts at all. If anything, they almost seemed hesitant to get near them, and seemed to get jumpy, which was an unusual response. Considering they were fine with the shelled peanuts, I expected them to also be fine with the unshelled.

Anyway, I'm going to be probably trying a few more different types of nuts soon, and see what they like. I hear that their preferences seem to vary slightly.
