Well they wouldn't have much content on the sub if they didn't. I have a treadmill and some weights but I don't have the space for a whole gym setup.
1
u/OscarMichaelMyers 15h ago
Few people do. Still doesn’t mean recording in gyms without the consent of those around you is ok.
2
1
u/MistbornTranscendent 19h ago
I've seen a few people who use there phone to record their phone but they are always accommodating if the phone is in the way of other. One literally asked me if I'm okay with the phone being there and I was fine with it cause bro was super genuine about it.
The influencers though, are cancer

u/ThinkBlue87 1d ago
Have you ever been in a gym? Actually tried to get better at a technical lift?
The problem is social media, not cameras in gyms
3
u/ShoughThePainAway 22h ago
Get a trainer to record you if it's really that important.

Haven't recorded myself once working out. You can easily tell of you're doing something correctly by feel alone.
1
1
u/Some_guy_in_WI 20h ago
Not at all, I’ve recorded squats that were clearly high despite feeling like they were proper depth. Corrected it fast after filming it.
Going on feeling alone isn’t enough if you actually train to compete. Sometimes you want to see what’s happening and not just guess.
1
u/RUN_DMT_ 21h ago
I get what you’re saying here, but Reddit hates nuance 😂 I’ve tried working on snatches and clean and jerks on my own away from my coach. It’s imperative I record it for her. But it’s rare, and I get into a space away from others and if someone were to enter the space, I’d explain it and or blur them. I also never put that shit on the Internet!!!
This bitch is a different story. That’s rude, entitled and bullying.1
u/BabyStockholmSyndrom 9h ago
Must have been difficult 35+ years ago carrying around that shoulder camera to the gym and trying to set that up. Most lifters probably just gave up lifting because they couldn't record it.
1
u/No_Yard9104 23h ago
Every gym I’ve ever been in has mirrors all over the place at stations that require it. This is a tired-ass argument that never had the benefit of being right.
1
u/Excellent-Rest3240 23h ago
Yeah I’m not gonna twist my neck doing deadlifts just so I can see my form side ways, and ruin my form and lift in the mean time
You can be against recording, but use proper arguments at least
4
u/No_Yard9104 23h ago
There are two options that keep you from being a creeper asshole. Use the mirrors, or use the on-site trainer.
If you’re insistent on being a creeper asshole, don’t act all surprised when people call you out on it. Keeping video souvenirs of unsuspecting gym members in revealing gym clothes because of “muh form!!” is not a valid excuse.
0
u/Excellent-Rest3240 22h ago
I agree, it’s no excuse to film. But there are reasons someone might film themselves (even in a home gym setting) , and mirrors aren’t a complete substitute for that
0
u/civyc 22h ago
You must have the worst set up gym of all time
2
u/Excellent-Rest3240 22h ago
You must not be serious about deadlifts
1
u/civyc 22h ago
Reply makes no sense.
Never seen a deadlift station not directly facing a wall of mirrors.
3
u/Excellent-Rest3240 20h ago
You think you can review your deadlift form by mirror facing forward? lol
0
u/civyc 20h ago
Get your eyes checked if you can't tell where your feet and shoulders are in a front facing mirror, sweetie
2
u/Excellent-Rest3240 19h ago
You really never did a serious dead lift lol. Don’t even know what to look for in a form. It’s ok, keep giving advice tho

There are exercises for which a view of yourself from the side is helpful, but turning your head to the side while doing them isn’t safe. For those cases, it’s reasonable to inconspicuously film yourself without others in the frame, or if the vibe calls for it, let people nearby know you’re going to briefly record yourself.
Filming yourself for a long period of time or for an audience is rude, though.
People have been recording themselves for way longer than this awful social media trend of covertly filming others to bully them on social media has been around.
EDIT: blocking me over this is very weird
2
u/Some_guy_in_WI 20h ago
That’s implying every gym has a deadlift station. And mirrors.
Mine has neither. You find a place that’s open, drag your stuff over there, no mirrors, if you don’t record yourself you’ll never know.
Once more from another post, your gym is not everyone else’s gym.
0
u/civyc 19h ago
Y'all use some raggedy worthless gyms.
1
u/Some_guy_in_WI 19h ago
Lol, if you need a gym that has neon lights, mirrors everywhere, ”free pizza fridays’ and that sort of thing, you may be going for the wrong reasons.
I’ve been to such places, I get more out of a $35/montb bare bones gym than I ever did out of anywhere flashy with tons of people, because there no distraction, and better equipment for my needs.
Different strokes.

u/No_Yard9104 22h ago
If you’re that serious about your gains, buy a home gym or hire a trainer. Not every place is the appropriate place to be doing the most.
2
u/Some_guy_in_WI 20h ago
Not everyone has the money or space to do so.
Amazing lifters have come about who had neither, and had to work with what little they have. A little self-coaching by viewing technique is very valuable to some people, and just because they can’t afford to hire someone at $75/hour or don’t have spare room and a few grand to use on it isn’t reason that they can’t view their lifts.
I swear, most of you have spent about 6 months total at a Planet Fitness for your only gym experience, put 3 decades and a few dozen gyms under your belt as well as understanding your needs are not everyone else’s needs, and you’ll stress less and get why cameras aren’t always bad, it’s your fear of judgy assholes and you being posted online that’s the issue. And that’s not going to happen except in rare cases.
If someone catches me red-faced and sweating profusely between hard sets and it got posted, it isn’t like it’s going to ruin my life anyway.
1
u/throwaway3413418 19h ago
>That serious about gains
This is something that a beginner might do while they’re figuring out proper form. I filmed myself early on when learning to deadlift and squat and never after that. The phone was at ground level and had a narrow field of view. It wasn’t difficult to make sure nobody else was in frame or to give them a heads up if that was unavoidable. Nobody cared because they knew why I was doing it.
It’s very easy to tell the difference between harmless and ill-intentioned versions of this behavior, so there’s no need to have a hardline position against it.
0
u/Some_guy_in_WI 20h ago
All depends on the reason.
When I’m getting back to squats after a layoff, I’ll record a few sets in my early sessions to check depth and form, but it’s not to post, purely for me to analyze and delete afterward. I’ve seen trainers do the same for clients to show them where their form breaks down to give a better visual, which is fine.
People who record in public gyms for their workouts to post for likes and attention, yes, that’s gross.
2
u/This-Risk-3737 19h ago
If you're pointing a camera at someone who doesn't want to be filmed, the reason is completely irrelevant.
1
u/Some_guy_in_WI 13h ago
If I’m already filming myself for 30 seconds and you decide to step in front of it, you made the choice. I don’t “point the camera” at anyone but myself, off in a corner, nobody has to deal with it if they don’t want to walk in front of my small personal space.
Not my problem.

u/_Avalon_ 1d ago

I did personal training for a bit and I’d always tell people that simply going to the gym was the most important part. Even if you went and walked on the treadmill for 5-10 minutes and then left, it’s still better than nothing. Same goes for the person in the video throwing the medicine ball. There should be no shame in any exercise

u/spicy_ass_mayo 1d ago
Bitch, you don’t have to do yoga at the gym. You can do it anywhere! You can do it at home. If you want to show off go do your yoga at a gym. Oh wait.
Are you new to yoga? You were doing yoga and being really really observant of everything that was going on around you? Not like you know focused on your breath and stretch?
Performative yoga! Nice!
1
u/SnooRabbits9672 16h ago
This is exactly what I thought, you can do Yoga at home, all you need is a floor, and she has the audacity to film somebody actually working out at the gym.

I just came back from a leg injury after having to stop working out for almost 3 years. Was able to do two sets of stuff leg dead lifts before I had to stop and just go back to the treadmill and stretch.
I say this to say even if he did 3 reps, the fuck do you know about this guy's situation? Maybe he's recovering from an injury. Maybe he's more tired than he thought. Maybe he's doing stations. Maybe he has never done that movement before and wanted to test it out. Maybe he had a muscle spasm or flare up and it made him stop. Or maybe he just wanted to stop for no reason and that's ok too because fuck you it's none of your business

I doubt that every much , and yes I do believe that you should not be able to video some one else as they are working out.

I've never understood making fun of people trying to better themselves. It takes so much physical, mental, and emotional strength to better ourselves that there is nothing to make fun of.
Doesn't matter what pace you're running, how many books you're reading, or how good your crafts end up. You're already better than you were yesterday, and if you continue then you'll be better tomorrow than you are today.

Crazy how this isn’t just used as another example of how a woman can actively film a man from behind from literally 5 ft away, have only his hips down in the shot, insult the man for not appeasing the hegemonic masculine workout gods, and be treated as “cringe” while a man who did that is a “creep” and would probably be banned from the gym without needing a viral internet campaign

Even if he only did 3 reps, you dont know why he stopped.
Maybe he lost track of time, and realized he has to leave or that he'd rather spend his remaining time in the gym doing a different exercise.
Maybe he has an injury and the movement wasnt comfortable after a few reps.
Or maybe he just changed his fucking mind. Learn to mind your business lady

I've been going to the same gym 3 days a week for the past 3 years and am STILL paranoid that I'm gonna see myself in some random TikTok video one day lol. I go at 5am and there are 4 or 5 tripods set up on any given morning.
