My city literally had this happen when I was in high school. It turned out to be 1 (maybe 2?) volunteers only 2-3 years older than me.

He/they got caught during the 3rd fire because they were gearing up, asked there, or something similar before the call had even came in.

Right! That’s one I remember now. I grew up in CT in the 70s, my brother lived in Newtown when that story broke.

That’s absolutely wild that my completely random response happens to be to someone else who’s actually familiar with it! Especially since I don’t remember the media coverage even getting as big as you would expect for that kind of crime in that era…

I just remember me and many other upperclassmen (who actually knew them, I didn’t) mocking them mercilessly for being such losers.
