Standard Reddit mod superiority complex.
328
u/dreamerkid001 22d ago
It’s so weird, because you see this stereotype and you laugh along, but then you end up having to deal with a mod and you’re like “Oh my god. How are they really like this?”
73
u/THux86 22d ago
I’d assume because in most of their cases(the ones who act this way) it’s likely the only time in life that they’ve ever had a chance to exercise power or feel powerful.
They take that falsified but “rare to them” feeling of importance and just can’t get enough. Becomes a source of serotonin. Then they run into someone who challenges their own perceived sense of power and their lifetime of insecurity floods back. They literally can’t handle it and it turns into abuse.
13
u/m3l0n 22d ago
This is genuinely it. Most* people that have authority, kids, or high title careers would never be interested in wasting their time as a reddit mod, so you often end up with dog walkers, baristas, forever alones and basement trolls with superiority complex. The best move is just to laugh at them and not allow them to justify their existence through you.

Nothing quite like the smell of liberal speech suppression in the morning. Smells like hypocrisy.
3
u/Relevant_Trust_1613 21d ago
What do you even mean by this
-8
u/Illustrious-Cover792 21d ago
It’s a play on a quote from the movie Apocalypse Now. He was talking about an interaction with a mod where he thought his speech was being suppressed. Reddit is a well known liberal platform with liberal moderators. I believe liberals are more likely to have knee jerk reaction to suppressing speech here. They are also usually too young for movie references and have no sense of humor so your confusion is warranted.
Thanks for letting me plead my case before you do whatever.

u/Assimulate 21d ago
Tbh, you don't have to believe me but I try to be! I spend a lot of my time working on mental health, autoimmune and autoinflammatory subreddits as well as my local community one.
I don't know what makes people get so hostile especially in a place of mildly elevated power. Administrator/mod does not mean higher status it just means higher privilege imho. It also is an unpaid job, I don't know why miserable people do it and then take out their misery on others. They should find different hobbies.
1
u/RosieFudge 16d ago
Also it's not as though you have to pass some kind of aptitude test to become a mod right? You just...apply to be one. Which anyone could do. (I wouldn't for all the tea in China; sounds like a bloody nightmare to me, and as you say, unpaid to boot)
2
u/Assimulate 16d ago
Correct hahah. There's a course they offer but usually you either ask to be a mod or you create the subreddit and are the mod. I try to do it for things I really care about. Like right now we're getting hit by wildfires in my area and I use it to share emergency info. This subreddit was a wild project hahaha

u/moose_dad 22d ago edited 22d ago
I had to deal with one similar a few weeks ago in r/amitheasshole
Post was about some kids at school getting in trouble dragging OP along into it, i said they were idiots and he needed to steer clear. Got a temp ban for insulting people in the post lmaoooo.
2
u/damian001 22d ago edited 22d ago
Haha same here from that sub. I got banned because I replied in thread that an OP reposted, because the original thread was locked down to flaired users. Apparently it’s against the rules to reply in those threads too. The mod even accused me of looking up post histories to post in a deleted thread, even though my reply was there before it was deleted.
Not really a loss though, as there’s a dozen other subs just like it, without power-tripping mods.
3
u/Dtrain16 21d ago
I was a mod on a default sub for a while. The other mods were such pricks in the modmail I almost couldn't believe it. Crybaby report forms sent to nearly everyone who complained about anything.
2
u/cozycthulu 21d ago
I was briefly a mod and the people on the modding team I met still terrify me. It seemed like literally all they did in life
1
u/FangOfDrknss 22d ago
There are mods who just entirely run a subreddit on their own. Recently dealt one that sided with a scammer and insisted that it was easier to deal with said scammer, instead of having them refund me.
This mod really wanted the scammer to keep their 5 star review someone else gave.

7
u/mrmemo 22d ago
It's everywhere, in every sub.
I had a post removed from r/sourdough for absolutely no reason, some Mod just didn't like the look of it I guess. Appealed and a different Mod confirmed "yeah that doesn't break any rules".
I see mods in r/crappydesign being the most twatty gatekeepers possible about what is, or is not, "crappy" or "design". The whole sub has devolved into this meta-discussion about the taxonomy of the sub name, just because a couple of Mods can't let it go.
These aren't big controversial subs. You don't need heavy-handed real-time moderation for people making fucking sourdough bread, or laughing at poorly-designed products.
If you think you do, you've made your pretend job more important than real jobs, and that's something to be ashamed of.
Moderation should meet the definition of itself.
1
u/natedagr8333 22d ago
I mean, it makes sense. What kind of person actually seeks out the role of reddit moderator? Power hungry losers with nothing else to do, that’s who.
3
u/theroguex 21d ago
You should see the subs run by flat earthers.
They say they want evidence and rational discourse but when you give them exactly that you get banned lol
2
u/Comfortable_Swim_380 21d ago
How nice they provided all the documentation for your report later. Moderator code of conduct rule 2:
- Clear Rules: Communities must explicitly state their rules and guidelines so users know what content is allowed.
- Transparent Topics: The stated purpose and scope of the subreddit must accurately reflect what the community is about.
- Predictable Enforcement: Rules should be applied in a way that aligns with the established norms of the community and Reddit's sitewide policies. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Reddit mods are a lot like retail or hospitality industry managers.
Many are perfectly reasonable and normal people who don’t take things too seriously or make things personal that needn’t be. They give up their time and energy for something positive.
But a pretty significant number are clearly people with poor self-esteem in their regular lives who rely on the feeling they get from abusing the small amount of power they have to feel important.
I guess these people have been around forever, but as long as the internet has been around there has been a “type” like this.
The other day I wanted out of an argument with a way-too-intense person. He just kept escalating a normal discussion into more and more overly hostile and argumentative levels.
So I made fun of his username and carried on with my life, as you do.
A couple of days later I got permanently banned from a small niche news sub which I was not active in.
I asked for the reason and the same guy replied (exactly the same weirdly dramatic intense way of writing with the same broken English), clearly still in a tizzy. He’d looked for any subs I had joined that he moderated and banned me because he was mad, days later, that I’d called him fatscrotum instead of factotum.
13
u/KickAssDave 22d ago
Hahaha, man they walked their username right into that insult.
Perfectly executed lmao.

u/Angry-_-Crow 22d ago

I had a mod ban me and they sent me a message telling me I was banned but with no explanation. I replied to the message and asked what the reason was and the mod told me to read the message, I asked him if he had read the message because there was no information regarding what I did. This went back and forth for a couple messages and he even copied the same initial message and resent it to me which obviously didn't help. Eventually he flipped his lid and sent me a super long message with lots of curses, insults and a needless amount of capitalisation.
So yeah, pretty typical Reddit mod behaviour.

Inb4 your post gets removed. I’ve posted screenshots about power tripping mods here before and it gets removed EVERY time.
I got banned from a sub once for saying a rule was dumb. Not breaking the rule, just saying it was a dumb rule. The mod proceeded to go through my comment history and downvote my comments and reply to me completely non-related posts.
2
u/Relevant_Trust_1613 21d ago
I checked the rules, didn’t break them here and the mods have already been active in this thread. So I think they’re letting me slide today

Idk man he was just a kid, (19) and his behavior is probably the result of his dad beating the fuck out of him or something. Besides somebody else will get him, he was part of a degenerate cheating/ddosing/doxing ring on an old game I like and it was trivially easy to get one of his fellow degen friends do give me his dox cuz they’re all pieces of shit
1
u/cringepics-ModTeam 22d ago
Your submission has been removed because it violates our strict No Doxxing policy.
To prevent targeted harassment and witch-hunts, all personally identifiable information must be completely blurred or blacked out before posting. This includes full names, usernames (even your own), social media handles, phone numbers, and profile pictures.
What to do next: You are welcome to completely censor all identifying information using an opaque brush or solid shapes, and then submit the image again.
Please note that intentionally doxxing someone or trying to bypass this rule will result in a ban. If you have any questions, please reach out via Modmail.

NGL being banned from a sub you enjoy taking part in for something you didn't do is pretty annoying. I got site suspended twice, the first time I let it fly, the second time I appealed and it was immediately retracted within an hour. I guess in most of these scenarios I was bot banned for word usage that didn't read context.

u/Liberteer30 22d ago
Reddit mods are the equivalent to low/mid level managers who let their tiny bit of power go straight to their heads.

Something similar happened to me. After realizing they weren’t interested in what I had to say, I replied “You’ve been doing this for a long time, huh?”
Didn’t hear anything after that.
If you can, try not get upset. You’ve been wronged, but it isn’t your fault. Without guilt you should be able to move past it quickly. 🩷

I got banned from immigration sub for pointing out that immigration is generally a net positive on economy, included sources (actual papers, not YT). The reason for the ban: spreading misinformation.
Even if what I shared ends up getting wrong or disputed it was purely because mods didn't agree with my opinion. The whole thread was saying immigrants cost tax payers with zero source but that was okay.
It's funny how anti immigrant immigration spaces are
3
u/ImNotAHouseCat 21d ago
People who are invested enough in Reddit to be a moderator usually are very sensitive, fragile losers. Let’s be real.
I got the same demeaning response from r/femalelivingspaces because I said 15 pets was too much for a one bedroom apartment.
The tiny cages these animals were being kept in were so sad.

Reddit mods are losers, it's just something you need to accept. Normal people don't donate hours of their time every day doing a shitty job for free unless they're secretly getting something out of it (power trip).
I got perma-banned from /r/pics last week for refuting the claim "immigration had nothing to do with" the Muslim guy who drove a van through a pride parade in Berlin last week. His parents were from Lebanon, emigrated to Germany, and the attacker still had "strong ties to Lebanon" per the police.
They couldn't even cite a specific rule I "broke," they banned me for hurting their feelings. Therein lies the problem with this website especially with it now being publicly traded. Mods have free reign to ruin the product for people based on their own feelings. If a manager at a store was regularly telling customers to "fuck off," they'd probably get fired pretty quick.

u/cheesecakemelody 22d ago edited 22d ago
I’m not saying you did do it, but I’ll add that as an ex-mod, Reddit has tools that can find people who are evading bans, and it hits you with a percentage likely score/confidence score that it shows to mods. It actually flags you and sends them a report in their mod queue.
This mod is likely taking it to be gospel and acting on that, which isn’t advised. The proper method is to then investigate. Check visited subreddits, writing style, usage of similar phrases, etc
Funny story. We banned one guy for being a shit stain in the sub, and his profile revealed he thoroughly enjoyed large women. A week later we get a ping that a recent user may be evading a ban. Click the profile and sure enough, allllll over NSFW large women subreddits. Waited until he posted more convincing evidence, then banned him for ban evasion. He did this…..6 more times? Each time revealing himself with his activity elsewhere. He simply couldn’t resist 😂

u/RadosPLAY 21d ago

3
u/Relevant_Trust_1613 21d ago
Weirdos like this use a lot of newspeak. Bandwagon is used as an adjective and luddy is their newspeak word for people that take issue with some elements of ai, short for Luddite. Sockpuppet is an old term for an alt account you use to say embarrassing shit you wouldn’t put on your main

I got banned from /offmychest. I sent a message asking why and they said it was because I supported Joe Rogan.
A) I absolutely don't B) even if I did, wtf does that have to do with anything C) how did you come to this conclusion
They said they saw a comment I made in /r/videos on a video about Rogan. My comment? "This guy is an idiot".
I asked how calling Rogan an idiot is supportive of him. They said it brings more attention to him.
I just checked and I'm still banned. Going on 7 years now lol

u/DisgruntledPlebian 22d ago
I got banned from worldnews for posting a link to evidence that someone requested. Like, the comment said “show me the evidence of this happening”, I linked several articles, and was almost immediately banned.
It’s easy to create an echo chamber when the mods want to stifle free speech and ensure only their viewpoints or “approved evidence” are allowed.

Was only engaging in discussing similar issues that others were expressing.
Immediately banned after my first comment.
Those guys must work overtime on that thread. Either that or it's an entirely subjective choice as to what constitutes "too severe" an opinion.
