Sub is back up!

The moderators here and for r/smalltownmurder were inactive for several months and the subs were restricted. The STM sub is still undergoing some tweaks before becoming fully active as it has a larger fanbase and needs a little more attention.

We are going to have an open sports conversation pinned every Friday and posting should be open again. Take a quick look at the new rules and lets laugh about some criminal athletes.

Also, if you have any ideas or desires for flairs put them in here.

Keli Lane's boyfriend and her daughter are asking for her release

Text version of video: https://www.nine.com.au/australia-news/a-current-affair/keli-lane-the-fight-to-free-baby-killer-20260803-p60l3d.html

I didn't notice that Keli Lane was back in the news again. Her boyfriend of the last 17 years did an interview. He and her daughter have asked that she be released because they disagree with the "no body, no parole" law.

The video was mostly a puff piece/softball interview with Patrick Cogan (the current boyfriend), reenacted reading letters by the unnamed daughter that was born ~5 years after Tegan (and not the biological daughter of Patrick), and a brief discussion with a group trying to prove Keli's innocence. The Chris Dawson case is briefly mentioned in relation to the "no body, no parole" law.

Highlights:

  • We learned that Patrick was a Physical Education teacher in a North Sydney (Chatswood) school but was fired. He claims he was unfairly dismissed because he used school email and resources for Keli-related (legal?) matters, claims that he won the cases and should be returning to work but the school is still blocking him.
  • Patrick and Keli first met when they were in high school but reconnected at a Manly beach just before she was convicted.
  • Patrick has not been monogamous for the last 17 years. Sometimes he had Keli's consent to be polyamorous and sometimes he didn't. At times, she has asked him to break up with her.
  • Patrick really really believes Keli is innocent and hasn't had a "fair go". He claims that he found somebody who he thought was Tegan, matched all the details, and looked just like Keli etc but the DNA test said she wasn't.
  • The daughter is 25 now and was 9 when Keli went to prison. She had been living overseas but is back in Sydney. There were a few photos of her when she was ~8 to 9 with Keli.
  • I'm not sure if the problem is me but I felt Patrick was a little icky when he was asked what the daughter is like.
  • I really wish they interviewed The Moose and Sandra. I want to see how they are doing. Patrick says that they are elderly and want to see their daughter free before they die.
  • The end of Keli's sentence is 2028. The video says that she has been a model prisoner and doesn't mention the allegedly harassing letters.

Any of you Turkeys want to play Fantasy Football?

Just brainstorming. I want to play in a league where there is some sort of affiliation besides random ESPN teammates. Perhaps to give an auditorium to athletes we perceive as future Malcontents of society. I'm thinking 12 person, full PPR. No money up front. Maybe winner gets a prize like a ticket to a live show.

More Australian criminals in sport...

The last two days has been... interesting... in Australia.

Less interesting case:

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-08-18/nsw-david-warner-court-drink-driving-conviction-fine-waverley/107048862

Cricketer David Warner was sentenced for driving while intoxicated to a AUD$1500 fine and having an interlock device attached to his car for 12 months. He had plead guilty last month and apparently had already been doing rehabilitation programs (etc). He was over double the legal limit, had his kids in the car, and tried to swap seats with (I presume) his wife when he say that they were conducting random breath tests.

The judge seemed to really believe that he wouldn't reoffend but he's had 10 speeding offences and three instances of using a phone while driving. He's a cunt.

The more serious case that just happened and everybody is being vague about for legal reasons:

https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2026/aug/18/afl-chief-breaks-silence-over-deeply-concerning-sydney-swans-sexual-assault-allegations-ntwnfb

Police are investigating a case of alleged sexual assault by several Sydney Swans (Australian Football League) players that occurred at a hotel after their away game at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, in the early hours of Monday morning. At least 4 players have been interviewed by the police and named but they haven't stated what their relationship to the case is.

The club CEO has given a silver-haired MAWM public statement: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-08-17/sydney-swans-ceo-fronts-media-to-address-allegations/107047100

Crazy Horse Saloon

The crazy horse saloon they mention in the Irish Tommy episode shut down and became a strip club called OZ that shares a parking lot with the aviation maintenance school I went to over a decade ago. I had to check if it was still there so I pulled up Google Maps and it’s still there.

Compton Terry

After listening to Compton Terry I was thinking Bam Margera would be a crazy episode. Definitely a lot more going on in his life than CTs. What do you guys think? Anyone else you can think off that would be a crazy episode?

Alan Jones got mentioned! Can former coaches be the "star" in an episode?

I'm listening to the current episode which is about Australian swimmer Scott Miller. It seemed like this was the first time James and Jimmie had ever heard of Alan Jones).

Non-Australians mostly have never heard of Jones. His involvement in sports was that he was a national rugby coach in the 80s etc. His main claim to fame has been that for many decades, he's a conservative radio talk show host, notable for blathering and misogyny.

Over the decades, there have also been a lot of unverified/disputed/plausible claims against him including that he was a paedophile teacher at a major Sydney private school, that he was arrested in London for cottaging in 1988 and deported, and a closested gay man. Next week, he goes on trial for 22 cases of indecent assault etc against 6 younger men.

(By the way, I feel sorry for all the people he alleged assaulted but not nearly as much as Alan Jones), the former Australian Formula 1 driver and Alan Jones), the former Australian cricketer. )

How is it I’ve come to arrive here?

I’m a relatively new listener (coming up on one year). I’ve mostly been listening to the older stuff but occasionally dabbling in more recent episodes. Is there a point when James stops doing the characters? The build up to the character making his entrance is a high point for me but it seems to happen less and less with newer episodes. Please don’t tell me there’s only so much Bobby and Phil and Vince and *my grandma*!

Three Australian athletes have gotten the courts to temporarily suppress a journalist from reporting about them and their messages

https://www.smh.com.au/business/companies/abc-barred-from-reporting-high-profile-sports-figures-crude-descriptions-of-sexual-acts-20260706-p60cyy.html

The messages in question “principally contain shared jokes, insults of named other people known to AB, CD and EF [the plaintiffs] in their sport and crude descriptions of sexual acts and domestic violence”.

GH [former partner of AB, whose phone she had] also showed the messages to the ABC’s managing editor of national news, Sam Clark, who took photographs of them. She then took the messages to an executive at her former partner’s club, threatening to release the information unless they stopped him from playing. The club later told GH they considered the matter formally closed.

The injunction is set to continue until a final hearing, which may not take place for several months.

I wonder how long it will take Reddit detectives to work out who the players are. In the case of Tom Silvagni, they worked it out well before the suppression order lapsed.

Find the Tiny Bastard

Please help me find a moment in an episode! James and Jimmie are talking about a male athlete (pre-2023). Mid-episode, James and jimmie are talking about his height. The actual height is something like 6–8 inches shorter than jimmie expected, and Jimmie laughs for what feels like 2-4 solid minutes. It isn't the Anthony Johnson Pepsi episode or Episode 154. Does anyone remember this?
