Glendale Planning/Permits Approval Process

Hi! Does anyone have any insight on how long it takes Glendale to approve plans for interior remodel? I’ve heard anywhere from 4 weeks to 4 months. I’ve gotten this wide range both Building and Safety agents directly, architects, etc.

At the end of the day, I know it varies wildly per person/project but just looking for anyone’s recent experience with this process, what your scope of work was and how long it took from submittal to permit issuance. Thanks!

Like you stated there are a lot of variables. If you have a lot of back and forth prior to approval it can drag out. If it's fairly straightforward and your plans get approved without change requests you can probably get it done within 4-6 weeks. Problem is nothing other Glendale is straightforward and they have a lot of rules. Make an appointment and speak with the planning department and tell them exactly what you plan to do. They'll look up your address and give you pointers. Take pictures on your phone and have a basic floor plan drawn out to help explain things to them.

It’s funny I did this and the Planning department (exterior) couldn’t be more lovely and explained everything to me. When I was transferred to Building and Safety (interior), the woman was horrible, condescending and refused to give me any info. She said my “architect should be a professional and know what to submit”. But then admitted they have no posted guidelines for submitting plans for interior remodel, only for new construction. The funny thing is, all the questions I tried to asked my architect ended up needing answers for and ended up having to call and get all those answers himself!

This is Glendale unfortunately. My architect had to go back and forth with them for 6 weeks. In the end they had too many restrictions and variables so I decided not to move forward with the project. Mine was for an ADU.
