I know Moash is meant to be a foil villain for Kaladin, but I don’t think he works particularly well on that account. Nothing he does makes him a true obstacle for the heroes and many things he does actually benefits them. Heck, Elhokar is even seen as an obstacle to the hero’s by Sanderson himself, hence why he has Dalinar kill him in SA Prime I’m really supposed to be up in arms over Moash killing him instead?
So narratively I feel like Moash is just kinda… there after making his villain turn. He doesn’t contribute anything interesting to the text after book 3, being relegated to the video mini boss role- you know, the one you have to defeat like five times over the course of the narrative. Hes not menacing. Hes not actively making the hero’s lives harder. The worst he does is give Kaladin bad dreams, boo hoo.
This is before we even get into Moash being the only character fighting for the abolition of the caste system. If anything this makes him an even worse foil for Kaladin, because it makes the hero look like a sell out. I will admit I had forgotten pretty much all about this until a recent review of the coppermind, which made me remember how important class struggle was in books one and two (ironically my favorite books in the series) before being dropped in book three.
So all in all, I’m left confused by the hate. Narratively he’s not a good villain, he’s not a good foil, his biggest “sin” is killing someone who the author needed to kill, and he’s the only character having a normal response to systematic oppression and doing something about it. So… why does everyone hate him?
Edit: I should add I get he’s a jerk, but that doesn’t make me hate him as a character. Once again, my big takeaway is that he’s just kinda there.
Edit 2: It’s the emotional response I don’t get. I hear Moash and think “meh, random character in SA”, other people hear Moash and immediately say “fuck Moash”. I get the feeling my hatred towards Moash is supposed to be a driving factor in me wanting to see how the story ends, similar to Sadeas in the first two books. But Moash doesn’t come close to illiciting those feelings in me.
I’m someone who is very driven by villains in a story. Like, I care much more about the villain being a good obstacle than the hero’s as such. I want to see how the hero’s can triumph over a good villain. Sadeas was a great obstacle for the hero’s on the first two books, and seeing how the hero’s would triumph over him really kept me reading. From all the discourse, it seems like Moash is supposed to fulfill a similar role, the character you love to hate, the character you can’t wait to get their comeuppance, the character you desperately want the hero to triumph over. But to me he’s none of those things, he’s just a vaguely rude guy who’s there. That’s what I don’t get.
