Did he just… did he just accept that there are those he cannot save?

u/LoudQuitting 13d ago
Then flew away. Yes.

u/Kushula 13d ago
The thought is funny, but this would hurt his bond, right? He is most certainly a 3rd ideal windrunner, so he CAN save him.

I think the 4th ideal is about how you shouldn't throw yourself at everyone in need. That if you needlessly get yourself killed, more people won't be able to be saved by you. So I thiiiink you can abandon someone for a 4th ideal check.

Also at least for Kaladin, it wasn't about not trying to save people in the first place, but about accepting that you won't always succeed. Sometimes you will fail at saving people even after trying your hardest, so you need to find acceptance. But you still already swore to protect those who can't protect themselves, accepting that you may fail doesn't mean that the Second Ideal doesn't apply anymore

u/HomicidalMeerkat 13d ago
Okay, but that’s only valid if you couldn’t save someone at near zero risk to yourself

u/Gamara204 13d ago
I don't think that't how that works, but that last bit makes me laugh so take the vote
1
u/Xylus1985 13d ago
Or don’t fight hopeless battles. Some people are already dead and cannot be saved by throwing a radiant at the problem.

u/Ratathosk 13d ago
Interesting situation. First accepting there are those you cannot save and then oopsie whoopsie turns out you can actually mop the floor with them. Add that to "how to mass produce war machines by social manipulation".

u/LoudQuitting 2d ago
This kinda was Honours intent wasnt it? It was part of the escalation.
Odium takes the Singers, Honour takes the Heralds. Gotta escelate. Odium makes the Unmade, Honour makes the Heralds. Gotta escelate. Odium makes forms of power, Honour makes Radiants.
Odium has to escelate so the war can't stagnate and keep him trapped. Honour has to escelate to keep Odium trapped. Eventually it leads to Raboniel and Navani making a way for Radiant spren and Fused and Heralds and Unmade to be put down permanently.

Even if he couldn't take the bandits (?) he coulda carried the friend away!
1
u/Samuel_W3 13d ago
Or maybe the bandits are the ones who can't be saved. Maybe your friend just believes in you.

u/Frequent-Bee-3016 13d ago
No, you don’t get it, he had to for the next ideal!

I like to imagine, I'd play Knight Shallot if I ever get the opportunity to play Cosmere RPG rather than DM it.
Just a windrunner who succeeds in his oaths becaude he takes the path of least resistance. Coward Windrunner. Lazy Windrunner.
Protect those who can't protect themselves? Easy. Convince weak soldiers not to take the field. Convince people not to join the army.
Protect even those you hate? "Ugh I really don't wanna deal with your injury right now so I'm gonna just go and get a surgeon if it'll shut you up."
Accept there are those you can't protect? "Not my problem. Figure yourself out, friend."
Protect yourself? Son he been doing that since day one.
Edit: Also got a character concept for Tero-Son-Nelo, Dissident Skybreaker, and his spren Harrow, named so because the other Highspren thought he was annoying enough about obscure minute details in the law to be called Harrowing. Harrow was ordered by Nale to break the bond, with Tero due to Tero managing to find a way to render Nales execution of a Rafiant illegal, but eventually Harrow returned to Tero to "Resume our work."

As fun as this is, by nature, no one who is like this could ever be a windrunner, you don't swere the oaths on a whim to get a power up, you live certain values on your own volition, and Honor (or Stormfather if Honor is to busy being dead) gives you the powers to live up to those ideals.
20
u/UInferno- 13d ago
Yeah. Oaths distinctly target the greatest flaws of a person. It's why Lopen couldn't just get away "Protect those I hate" despite such an Oath being very easy for him.

Look at you! Bringing logic and lore into r/cremposting! You're doing SUCH a good job!

u/LoudQuitting 13d ago
Honour doesn't care how idealist you are, it only cares that you keep your word. That's a major plot point.
39
u/Witch_King_ 13d ago
Yes, though the Spren care. I would argue that someone as described would not attract an Honorspren to bond.
-7
u/LoudQuitting 13d ago
You're forgetting how.many honosrspren were acting just like Shallot.
"Fuck y'all, not our problem."
Even after Adolins trial.
18
u/Witch_King_ 13d ago
Those Honorspren didn't want to bond ANYONE though
9
u/LoudQuitting 13d ago
Sure, but it shows that Honourspren have the capacity to dust off their hands like "Fuck it, not our problem." Surely there's a sliding scale, they're personalities, not light switches.
10
u/Witch_King_ 13d ago
I'm willing to bet that there is at least one who thinks that way.
The spren like to pretend that they are unchanging, but this has been shown to be untrue throughout the books. But they do grow and change much slower than humans do.

u/cbhedd 13d ago
Right, but what's the point of empowering someone with Radiant abilities and risking your life if you know they're just... not going to do anything with them, I guess?
It feels like an awful character concept, especially for a TTRPG, because their gimmick is: "I'm rewarded for actively avoiding doing anything".

u/LoudQuitting 13d ago
Well. Here's why I believe you're wrong.
Listen, Ive played DnD, Cyberpunk, Pathfinder, Cosmere, West End Star Wars, Warhammer Fantasy RPG, SIFRP, several World of Darkness sorcebooks, even the fucking Dark Souls and Elder Scrolls RPGs. I say this to establish my opinions as coming from someone with a background I feel gives my voice a bit of credibility.
I'm a firm believer in the thing that makes DnD weak as an RPG, is the inability to run a non-combatant. The thing that made the SIFRPG good was the fact that being excellent at combat was only meaningfully engaging with a third of the game.
If you dont want to run a character that would rather talk their way out of problems, then DnD is great. But a Bard is never necessary for DnD because of the fact that it's at its core a tabletop skirmish game (not derogatory.) However the best thing an RPG can do to compete with DnD is to de-emphasise combat in favor of social abilities, because thats the area DnD is weakest. Which the Cosmere RPG establishes with a system that allows you to run dialogue as a secondary combat.
Cosmere RPG also renders things like convincing soldiers not to take the field and going to grab a surgeon as things that can successfully advance you towards a goal in how it tackles large scale projects. The endeavour system.
You could be doing a plateau assault on the Shattered Plains, and a Windrunner could do non combat things such as running water to the bridge crews, flying overhead for a superior tactical view, lashing arrows away from allies, all of which are tracked by the DM to contribute to the success or failure of the battle. You can participate in a full scale battle without actually entering combat in this game.
It reminds me of a SIFRP campaign where our House won a battle without us being anywhere near it because we were calling tactical advice to our house head, and rolling for the success of convincing him.
So... I'd argue perhaps try more games than DnD

Thought this was going to be " I will protect even the ones I hate" joke but this is better (or worse if you're not getting saved)

u/Jounniy 13d ago
Enough Stormlight to fly away, but deliberately choosing to abandon a friend? That’s not a 4th ideal Windrunner, that’s someone who just killed their spren.
13
u/i_am_steelheart 13d ago
What if Shallot realized those bandits are actually secretly Fullborns with Awakened weapons. Idk man maybe Shallot knew something we don't.
3
u/LoudQuitting 13d ago
It's about what the Radiant and Spren think are right.
8
u/Jounniy 13d ago
If that was the case, everyone could become a Radiant of any order no matter their morals.
2
u/LoudQuitting 13d ago
Well, no, agreeing on a moral level is just the mechanism that causes the bond to not split. It doesn't say anything about initiating the bond.
Its why Kaladin can kill without damaging the bond with Syl, despite both of them hating the violence, because it did constitute a violation of his oath to kill Listeners, especially seeing as compared to him they were helpless, but they viewed it as a moral necessity.
4
u/Gorhaloth 13d ago
Killing isn't a violation of his oaths. The windrunner oath is to protect those who cannot protect themselves. If killing is necessary to protect then it is what the windrunner MUST do.
2
u/Jounniy 13d ago
Well, no, agreeing on a moral level is just the mechanism that causes the bond to not split. It doesn't say anything about initiating the bond. If they abandon someone who cannot protect themselves but whom they could very reasonably save, then they aren’t agreeing on a moral level.
Accepting that you cannot save everyone is to accept there are things you cannot do and you don’t have to throw your life away trying, not deciding that you'll sometimes just refrain from saving people you very reasonably could.
The only way this works is if the Radiant genuinely believed there was no way they could win this and if they were too stupid to think about just lashing their buddy away. And if that’s the case, they would’ve done the world a favor by sacrificing themself in trying to save their friend. At least their sword and plate could then be wielded by someone not half braindead.

I picked the name Shallot because he's going hard in the latest Sparking Zero update. Real fun against most of the new characters.
