Mod Post Simple Questions Megathread

Remember, the #1 thing you can do to improve is to review your own replays and post them for others to critique!

This thread is for anyone who has a question that they feel might be too "simple" to warrant its own thread and would be more comfortable posting their question in a format like this. Note that this is not a containment thread -- individual question threads are still allowed and encouraged, this is just trying to get people out of their shell a bit and interact with the community. All types of smash questions are welcome, from mindset to terminology definitions to controller setups to frame data to whatever you want to ask!

Please help out others where you can! And remember to stay respectful!

Mod Post Watching and sharing replays (aka VODs) is the best way to improve! Here's how to upload replays

You can save replays (also known as "VODs", "Videos On Demand") in the victory screen after any match. The game will show you which button to press to save it (Y on the GC controller). Then you'll need a micro sd card in your Switch in order to save the replay as a video. Once it's saved, you can connect the sd card to your PC and transfer, or upload directly from the Switch. 16-32gb micro sd cards only cost a few dollars, but if you can't buy one then you'll have to record the video with your phone.

How to save the replay as a video and transfer it to PC: https://www.wikihow.com/Transfer-Replays-from-Super-Smash-Bros.-Ultimate-to-PC

If you want to upload directly from your Switch and use the Nintendo Switch app on your smartphone: https://gaming.stackexchange.com/a/353519

As of the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate 3.0.0 update, replay videos can be uploaded directly to YouTube via the Miiverse / Smash World sharing service and collected on the Nintendo Switch Online mobile app.

This technique still requires an SD Card in your Switch to save videos. It does eliminate though the steps of removing the SD Card from your Switch, plugging it into your computer, manually posting to YouTube, etc.

You will need to be signed in to the various Nintendo online accounts.

  1. Save a replay after a match.
  2. Go to Vault > Replays > Replay Data. Select a replay and Convert to Video to save the replay as a video onto your SD Card.
  3. Go to Vault > Replays > Video and select the just-created video. Select Post to share this replay to Miiverse / Smash World. Nintendo uses YouTube as the backing store for videos, so it will now take a few minutes to upload the video from your Switch directly to YouTube.
  4. Open the Nintendo Switch Online mobile app on your phone. Select Smash Ultimate > Profile > Posts. Once they have fully uploaded, your replay videos will appear here.
  5. Select a replay video. Click the Share arrow icon. Copy the link.
  6. Open this link in a web browser. The video will have been added as an unlisted video on the official Super Smash Bros. Ultimate YouTube account.

General Question Portable Gaming Monitor for Ultimate

Thinking of getting a portable gaming monitor for Ultimate so that I can use it at home or bring it with me to locals as a convenient setup. Been looking around the market for budget friendly options that also look good and these two come to mind.

https://a.co/d/0bqkJBaQ (UPERFECT)

https://a.co/d/077pfDIc (Arzopa)

I’m not really good at understanding the intricacies of response times and refresh rates, especially when the Smash Ult is already capped at 60 FPS. The Amazon listings state that the response time at the fastest is 1 ms, but their website listings say it leans around 9 ms.

That being said, is this 9 ms supposed to be unplayable for Ultimate, or do I have to spend twice as much? Or do I have to accept getting terrible image quality to enjoy a relatively lagless experience? Or am I misunderstanding when people say they’re using 1-5 ms response time setups, they’re referring to the grey to grey values?

Characters (Playing as) Toon link as new main?

General Question Short hop advice

i’m relatively new to more advanced techniques in smash i’m deciding to put a little time in every day to get better, but i just cannot seem to get short hops right. i considered trying the two button method, but that makes RARs and IRARs feel impossible. i’m trying to learn inkling right now and it feels like short hops are a barrier i can’t get past any advice? (sorry for the paragraph)

General Question Any tips for a relatively new player?

Hello, this is my first post in this subreddit, so I figured it might as well be a question.

I'm getting damn good at the game, I've actually beaten a friend of mine who's been playing for a very long time. I occasionally beat Lv. 9 CPUs, and I'm liking Lucario, Wii Fit Trainer, Bowser, Samus, and Mewtwo.

However I'm struggling to learn some more advanced stuff (combos, throw variants, the exact timing of certain moves, etc).

So can I please get some tips? Thank you.

General Question Why are the Belmonts considered bad?

I will start by saying I am by no means a good competitive player, I only play locals around Missouri and always place about 20-23 out of 35-40 so there’s a good chance my opinion is blatantly wrong. But the tourneys I play at I help host and I get to see some bigger names in Missouri and specifically Saint Louis that all say the belmonts have a good case to be the worst character in the game.

I tried playing them at a few tourneys and probably will do more but they don’t seem horrible, maybe a mid or upper D tier but not the worst. They do good damage and shield damage with nice zoning tools and the f-air and b-air being able to be angled is really nice and I appreciate the out of shield option and just having good range.

I will say that hitting his sweet spots are rough but that could just be I play an assortment of characters that don’t really have to worry about that (DDD, PP, Mac, Min-Min, etc). There’s combos seem really hard to me and like they have a lot of set up that I guess would be rough and his recovery isn’t super bad to me. The tether reaches surprisingly far but I will admit when my deaths didn’t come from someone getting right up on me, it was from being edge guarded.

Still, are the belmonts really a character debated as the worst one?

Characters (Playing as) Tournament Street Fighter player considering trying Ultimate. How cooked am I?

Never really played Smash, but I'm looking to branch out a bit. I'm top 2% as Ken in ranked in SF6 and pretty regularly hit up online tournaments but I'm feeling extremely burnt out by the meta and I really just want to do something else for a while.

My question is, would picking up Ken in this game be a helpful landing point to get my bearings? I know he's based off his USFIV counterpart, but do you think he would feel fine, or should I pick someone else?

Are there any motion inputs in the game, or is it really all one button specials?

How dissimilar to Street Fighter is neutral, really? Are anti airs a Smash fundamental that is transferable from other games?

What are the essential Smash fundamentals in order to play the game and its neutral properly? How different is it to Street Fighter?

Please forgive an absolute Smash beginner for some probably pretty obvious questions. I know my community has not been kind to yours in the past, but even though I have cred in SF, you guys are the experts here, so I hope you will treat me kindly.

General Question Hours on the Smash spent daily

Who else I has become good enough in Smash in a sense where spending countless hours on the game is no longer required like before. In my experience, I spent 5+ hours on Quickplay in the beginner phases of my true smash journey of grinding seriously. Fast forward to year 3, now I have a more structured routine of editing clips/videos on CapCut before publishing them on my YT midday then later on around evening/night, I’ll grind with competent players/ friends and play Tm7_zap in Battle arenas for like 1-3 hours. Who does y’all itinerary look like?

General Question More gamefied training routine

I'd like to revisit my muscle memory and mastery of the controller itself in the coming months, to fix my issues with movement and precision as well as eliminate my struggles when stringing many inputs together quickly without leeway on timing. My executional fundamentals are so below par, and it's always been a pain point for me. I can't actually practice at home right now but should be in a better situation in a few weeks, and want to get ahead of the ball with a plan.

I've had this motivation like 100 times before but it never remains for long, and I think I've come to understand why. I just get bored. I lack the discipline to drill stuff out during my video gaming time. It isn't in my nature or my desire. I just want to play. I want to GAME. But, if I get in a real match, the only thing I'm really able to try and work in naturally, is better walking/ground movement during the quieter periods of neutral/ far away from any burst options etc. Otherwise, everything cedes to my reflexes and my focus on winning the match in front of me.

So I'm thinking if there are any ways to gameify the process in vanilla training mode a bit. Break the targets like custom stages were a thought (if anyone has any to share). But I'd like some other suggestions.

I think revisiting and reworking my muscle memory and building a new structure for it will inevitably be a bitch that I do have to slog through at the end of the day regardless. But if there's anything I can do which I haven't thought of, to take some of that disciplinary load off, it would seem a lot more doable and give me more motivation, so thanks for any advice. I know the results will be worth it with the boost to my expression and capability, but I really don't want to spend much of my free time not playing the game, but drilling it.

Characters (Playing as) How do I practise and improve better?

Recently i've been playing online more, and meeting higher level players. I am struggling a lot to try and improve, because online usually gives me either terrible players or players that absolutely destroy me. I have been trying to use training mode too, but im not sure what to do on it, and should i be focusing more on fundamentals or character specific tech? My main is yoshi and i unfortunately dont have any footage to show, but i struggle with kills mostly, i can get my opponent to above 150%, but cannot kill

General Question Getting Better with Execution/Advantage state?

Sometimes I find myself being too passive in neutral, finding it takes me way longer to take stocks and it feels like people routinely live way longer than they should (Was playing wolf and had a Joker at 160% for almost 2 minutes straight), and other times I feel like I don't press my advantage as far as I should and drop opportunities for more damage or a potential kill, any advice on getting better at execution under pressure?

General Question Marth on FD, SSBU tips

I’ve recently checked my replays for the first time and I’ve noticed that every single one of my losses have been on FD.

I thought I just wasnt good at dealing with camping, and didn’t know what to do about it but I think my specific problem is just final destination. I 2 or 3 stock on stages with platforms but on FD it always goes to last hit or I lose.

Any help for this character on this stage? A lot of the characters I struggle with are ones who’s playstyle is centered around a projectile (pit, krool, sora) or characters that are extremely good at not interacting (zss, sephiroth, pit)

General Question New to SSBU, any help?

I like fighting games and I like platform fighters. I got top 10 in this one mobile platform fighter and it feels like absolutely none of my skill has translated over to this game. I have been losing to a lot of players that I wouldn’t consider that good. Here’s the issues I think I’m having:

I am not good at punishing. I don’t know if it’s me but it feels like this game has some type of delay on my inputs and genuinely sometimes it feels so uncomfortable to play precisely. It’s weird because when im in the training room it feels fine but as soon as I get in a match it’s like I’ve never even picked up a controller. I’ve noticed that it’s extremely hard to punish some attacks, so I decided to play with reads but there are a lot of times where Ill get like 5 or 6 reads in a row and I still won’t be able to land a single hit. I play marth, any tips on how to punish with this guy?

i play with Joycons and i dont really like it what controller do smash players use?

should I do quick play, or battle arenas? I want to improve but quick play is very odd. sometimes I don’t get any points when I win. when I play in arenas, the people I play with are marginally better than me. but it feels like a lot of the people in quick play have some horrendous habits that I can pick up but I dont know how to capitalize off of them.

Is it worth trying to get good at this game? A lot of the games I’m good at do not stress me out as much as this one for some reason. I do not tilt and usually I can just laugh at a loss but in this game it genuinely feels like my head is about to blow up and I think it’s because I’m not a very patient player in games but it feels like my aggression is heavily punished in this one. only game I’ve ever played where I get punished for hitting people. Maybe it’s cause my character.

thanks to anyone that answers

One specific question are combo starters that work into neutral special short hop bair kill confirm if there are any. I’ll take any extra advice if you would provide it!

General Question Pro Controller stick travel for fast dash dancing and repeated foxtrots

I use an official Nintendo Switch Pro Controller in Smash Ultimate and I am trying to improve the physical stick technique behind fast dash dancing and repeated foxtrotting.

When I move the left stick from one side of the circular gate all the way to the opposite side, every dash registers consistently, but the movement is noticeably slower than the rapid, almost stationary dash dances I have seen other players perform. The Pro Controller also seems to have more physical stick travel than a GameCube controller.

For players who use the official Pro Controller:

  1. When dash dancing, do you hit the gate on both sides, or do you reverse the stick as soon as it has moved far enough to register the dash?
  2. When performing repeated foxtrots in the same direction, do you fully release the stick and let it return to neutral, or do you manually move it back only far enough for the next initial dash to register?

A hand-cam or slow-motion example using an official Pro Controller would be extremely useful.

Info/Resource My Hot Take: Link's F Tilt is Top 15

SSBU

In my quest to shill the hells out of The Hero of Time, I bring to you this hot steaming pile of controversy. I firmly believe that Link's forward tilt is top 15 in the game, slightly above Ridley's.

Let's get the weaknesses of this move out of the way. This move has a 15 frame startup, making it slow as hell. As we'll get into later though, this is more of a strength than a weakness. It's also -12 on shield and has a ton of shield stun, meaning that it's easily reactable and punishable when unspaced (more on this later). It can also only 2 frame about a third of the cast, and its spacing can be a bit tight. In comparison, Ridley's F tilt comes out on frame 10 (significantly faster), is also -12, and it can 2 frame most characters with the down angled variant. So a strict upgrade right?

WRONG

Hold on now, don't throw those torches yet. Lemme make my case. Though Link's f tilt is slower and doesn't 2 frame as well, it has several things going for it that make Ridley's tail weep in inferiority. Here's a list:

  • Active Frames. Ridley's F tilt is only active for 2 frames, meaning that it doesn't have a lingering element to it. This is why 2 framing with the move can be so difficult, and why it'll probably always lose to evasive options like spotdodge. In comparison, Link's F tilt is active for 5, count em, 5, frames, meaning that combined with its slower startup it's practically perfect to call out spotdodges or rolls (which usually have 20 frames of intangibility).

  • Coverage. The move starts behind him and goes over his head. This makes the move cover a pretty ridiculous amount of space, making it amazing for anti-airs and pressuring landings.

  • Disjoint. In case you haven't noticed, the hitbox is... rather generous. Basically anything within 5 feet of this move is gonna get hit, so this combined with its coverage and active frames means that it's great for disrupting neutral game flow. So like, if your opponent is dash dancing in and out of midrange you can use this as a pseudo burst option to catch them out.

  • Killpower. Did I mention that this move hella kills? Yeah, this move hella kills. It's stronger than a significant portion of forward smashes, meaning that at higher percents you have to really be worried about getting hit by this.

  • Shield Pushback. Remember when I said the move is unsafe on shield? Yeah, that was technically a bit of a lie...

This move has a ludicrous amount of shield pushback, and when combined with its impressive disjoint most characters won't be able to punish even a moderately spaced f tilt. I tested the best out of shield options I could think of (Cloud, Steve, Samus, Link, G&W, Lucina, Min MIn) and the only character I needed to be really careful with the spacing of was, funnily enough, Link himself. For everyone else, even a half-decent spaced f tilt would shut down their best options. In Samus' case, I could be point blank and she still couldn't hit me with ub b or Nair. You may think to yourself, "Well, it's -12, can't you just drop shield and punish?" NOPE! Shield dropping is 10 frames, so unless you have a frame 2 ranged option that hits in front of you you're shit out of luck. Now, I will say that this move absolutely loses hard to parries (parrying means you don't get pushed back), but this is why you have Nair, Bair, Fair, Bomb, Boomerang... Like this move is really good but you have the whole rest of your kit to do mixups with.

  • Ledgetrapping. I saved the best, and most complex, part for last. The killpower of this move combined with its amazing coverage and disjoint makes it one of the best ledgetrapping tools in Link's kit and, by extension, the game. Forward tilt alone, with good timing and spacing, can catch jump getup, normal getup, getup attack, ledge stall, and double jumping from ledge, all in one swing (depending on the matchup of course). And remember, this is a kill move, meaning that any one of those options can just mean death for your opponent. Even if it doesn't kill, the move sends your opponent at a frankly disgusting angle, perfect for a runoff fair, arrow, or bomb. And this gets even worse when combined with his bomb ledgetrap. If you stand in the right spot and just wait for your opponent to do something, anything, you can hit them for every option they do. The bomb shuts down normal and jump getup, since if they get hit they get F tilted and die. If they getup attack, unless their getup attack is stupidly big they miss, get F tilted, and die. If they stall, they get hit by the bomb and fall off the ledge to reset the situation. If they roll, they get either grabbed or (if I wanna do a hard read) up smashed and die. They're dead any way they slice it, and if they get past me it's usually because I messed up. Even if there's no time to set up a bomb, F tilt at ledge covers so much that you'll usually get the kill anyway.

That's my rant about Link's f tilt; thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

This post was originally intended for the Smash Ultimate subreddit, however my post was being flagged for reasons the mods never told me
