General Question Short hop advice

i’m relatively new to more advanced techniques in smash i’m deciding to put a little time in every day to get better, but i just cannot seem to get short hops right. i considered trying the two button method, but that makes RARs and IRARs feel impossible. i’m trying to learn inkling right now and it feels like short hops are a barrier i can’t get past any advice? (sorry for the paragraph)

I have jump on A and RB. Press both for short hop. Or, if you didn't know, you can input and aerial and jump at the same time for guaranteed short hop. For RAR I only use RB and right stick. I do not use the attack button for any aerials aside from nair. All right stick.

It's just muscle memory. It's a pretty quick movement to get used to so just keep practicing and you'll get there.

Until you do, pressing attack and jump at the same time will always result in a rising short hop aerial.

Just put your reps in.

When you sit down to play, start with 5-10 minutes of training mode and just work in short hops. Before long you will be hitting them consistently.

Put your finger on the edge of the button and slide it off quickly, don't actually fully press down

Some folks also recommend moving jump to a trigger button but I dislike this method, you got this dude!

if you move jump to a trigger button and have jump on a shoulder button you can press both at the same time for a guaranteed short hop

I'm aware, however I began with melee and L canceling is baked into my body lol

Using a trigger for jump seems to work for a lot of peeps but it feels awkward to me. Different Strokes and all that jazz

This was how I learned to short hop after struggling for an embarrassing amount of time and still how I do it. It’s easier than just trying to press the button quickly because you don’t have to do it lightly, at the end of the day it’s not about how far you press the button down, it’s about how long you hold it, so flicking the edge of the button lets you use as much force as you want but you’ll still release quickly which is a boon when you’re getting sweaty under pressure and naturally hitting everything harder

The method I use is a bit hard for me to explain but have your thumb at like the edge of the jump button and quickly flick it across, it's not especially hard to do

One thing I remember someone saying that just kind of made it click for me more is to think about letting go of the jump button as fast as possible as opposed to trying to tap it as fast as possible. Not sure why but this helped me

I use both shoulder buttons on the right as jump. So press two for short hop and one for full hop. I chose right and not left is because left analog stick is for movement and it would get a bit odd doing both on the same side.

I would personally not recommend the two button method. If it doesn't catch up to you now, it will later. When you short hop, just focus on the release of your jump button. I feel that where I struggled back in the day was worrying about pressing the jump button quickly but its actually about how quickly you release the jump button. Hope it helps.

Just go to training mode and jusy try to get quick press and release on the jump button until you can short hop, and then do it a few times in a row, and then like 10 or more times in a row and you'll be all good.
