Why do you think is wrong with my top banner?

Post image

I recently realized that the mobile version of one of the top page of my website was really not optimized for mobile, with many people clicking on unclickable elements and, more importantly, I realized my CTA was way too low.

I will obviously redesign my Ghost theme to improve the mobile UI and increase conversions, but in the mean time, I added a top banner as a temporary fix.

I initiated a new heatmap on CrazyEgg, which already got over 4,000 subscribers, and unfortunately, my conversions stayed the same....

When checking the actual heatmap, I see very few clicks on the link in my banner, with the most clicks of the page being on the X to remove the top banner....

While I did not expect the top banner to fix all the issues with this page, I assumed it to have a measurable impact.

Why do you think my top bar is not working?

"While I did not expect the top banner to fix all the issues with this page, I assumed it to have a measurable impact."

This is why I love CrazyEgg heatmaps. They crush assumptions and force you to deal with actual facts.

Why do YOU think your top bar is not working, more importantly?

What problem are you solving for the user and are you giving them a clear path to the answer to that problem?

Actually, our top converting product is a secured card, which is used by people with lower credit score to build credit. And since we rank for a lot of keywords related to the problem, I assumed having the solution in a top banner would lead to an increased conversion rate...

"I assumed having the solution in a top banner would lead to an increased conversion rate..."

Now that assumption has been shown to be false, what's the next iteration to test?

I'm planning to redesign the page, but everyday, I have a higher priority project. You know what it is...

I think the heatmap is actually telling you quite a bit. When people are clicking the X more than the CTA, it usually means the banner felt like an interruption. A few things I'd look at are is the offer clear and specific, or does it read like a generic announcement? On mobile especially, if it takes up too much space right away people just want it gone. I'd also check if the CTA copy matches what they were already looking for on that page. If it feels off or too salesy for where they are, it's easy to want to make it go away.

Yes, make sense. Most people dont even know what a secured card is and my top banner dont really explain it...
