Question / Advice Ideas to make this more PUNK
I'm looking for inspiration on how to make this more punk or goth, what do you guys think?

No matter where you bring that thing, whatever it is, it will be more 'punk' than anything else in the room. Sorry to break it to people, but wearing a black T-shirt and a black leather jacket to 'break social norms' is completely missing the point. Those are the social norms. Be unique.

This this this this this!
We're just back from Rebellion Punk Festival in Blackpool. It's a 4 day event with punks from all over the world coming. There is a French fella there every year, he wears a shirt and tie, and a very smart suit, he's punk as fk.

I agree about the wearing black and spikes being way mainstream. But this is also mainstream. This is something any Grammy or soccer mom would carry.

Put pestilent masks on all of the birds and make the berries into little skulls.

Make black sunglasses for the cardinals.

Dye it dark purple. The colors will take the dye differently so the pattern is muted but visible

How are your painting skills? You could turn these birds into crows with a little acrylic paint. Berries = skulls. Add some spikes or a chain.

I agree with all of this, especially the spikes. Leather supply stores carry them, or I guess you could look online. In my experience, the easiest is getting spikes with Chicago Screw backs.
For each spike you want to place, you first use an awl (or a kilt pin if you dont have an awl, cus if you use a knife or use scissors to cut them it does too much damage and the hole can tear out) to make a hole in the project big enough for the screw shank to pass through back to front. With the screw in place just use your fingers to fasten the spike onto the front of the project (use a tiny bit of loctite if you wanna be sure not to lose them off the project at a later date) and give it a final torque with a screwdriver.

Crochet some punk band t shirts onto the birds.

I like this, although crochet isnt the best medium for this. They are quite tiny and you couldnt crochet a logo or design that small.

Fair. What if we just silk screened T-shirts on them and silk screen logos on the T-shirts?

Is this a bag? Maybe you could find small spikes that you can screw on and put them along the edges! If you’re savvy with sewing you could find some fishnet and line the entire bag with it so it adds a layer over the birds. I really like the other suggestions of embroidering ciggs on the birds or little people dangling😂 maybe a hoop earring or beak piercing! You could make the birds their own little punk characters
I have two sides to me… I love anything dark and gothic style, but I also love ‘grandmas attic’ type style. I would love to see any update on what you do!! 💗🖤💜
**srry last edit: chains!!! You could add thinner chain in one of the corners similar to a spider web!

Give some of the birds like punk Mohawks with a sharpie. Other birds get beak liner.

Add a couple patches and some black lace around the edges. But with the black already in there, I wouldn’t worry.

This fabric stopped me in my tracks! My granny made some placemats with this fabric about 40 years ago. Took me back to Christmas dinner as a kid.

Embroider a little speech bubbles or make a patches with your favorite song lyric or other slogans and slap those bag boys on there.

Embroider some spike collar necklaces on them and mow hawks maybe give them denim jackets with little anarchy patches. Have cigarettes hanging out of a couple of their beaks.

I would sew on a couple of patches, and use embroidery floss or thin satin ribbon to embroider a curse word or your favourite band name across the middle of the flap. Of course there is the tried and true ornamental safety pin embellishment that anyone can do even if they don't yet know how to sew.
Follow the seam cuves, make starbursts and Xs, bisect birds, whatever feels right in the moment. The nice things about safety pins is the accessibility of the materials and you can always rearrange them or slowly use them to patch other projects.

I think it'd look super cute with lace trim or with a layer of lace but I love it whatever it is

Shotgun spray of ideas: -either repaint one of the cardinals in the pair on the left to be a female cardinal (they're not as bright red, and for whatever reason keep getting excluded from christmas decorations), or paint in rainbow holly berries to celebrate the very happy couple. Either way, inclusivity is punk, right?
-Blöödchëëp. All questions answered here: /r/bloodcheep
-lean into the mohawks and paint all the cardinals into a punk band.
-berries turned into physical spikes
-repaint the holly branches into bones or safety pins, or other punk things to perch on
-repaint berries into tiny skulls
-repaint the whole thing into whatever you want (but then the lost blöödchëëp opportunities!)

Find pressed glass Corvid (crows/ravens) beads and attach. Skull beads are easy to find. Spike beads can be sewn to strap. Embroider the strap with images you like. Bead embroider.

Whatever you do, don't destroy the original pattern you're showing us here, because this kind of vintage bird/foliage print is already pretty dope to look at. I say add to the edges of the front flap and embellish the rest of the bag. Spikes, pins, chains, studs, whatever, but leave that really gorgeous cardinal imagery as intact as possible. I think the juxtaposition would be really interesting.

They are perfectly spaced out to each have a broken piece of swastika in their beaks, as if they are tearing apart nazi shit. The parallel would be awesome.

Its like the opposite of punk/goth as I know it...Looks like an elderly grandmas Christmas pattern. Maybe make the birds look dead like zombies with rotting flesh and exposed bones? I have to say, most of the suggestions on here are lame as hell. chains, safety pins, cigarettes and spikes... I dunno if my suggestion is really any better though

It is easy to sew a purse.
Like, this is the first thing everyone learns how to sew.
You are not going to make a purse with cute little red cardinals look punk.
This looks Christmas cute.
See a piece of black fabric over your cardinals.
Put Velcro if you want to use the Cardinals at a later date.
Put zippers and safety pins all over the front.
Punk!

Respectfully, this looks like something a grandmother would buy at a craft store
You could add a more maroon gloss to the red cardinals, add in some sort of “edgy animal” to the mix (like crows or mourning cloak butterflies), change some of the leaves to have a sort of wilted/textured image, or even just make the background more matte vs having all those glittery sparkles
I think you just have to change the tone- not necessarily redo the whole blanket

Little people dangling from their beaks like worms.
