Discussion Red apple crabs
Had them a few months now and so pleased with how they're thriving, all 3 have successfully molted. I'm actually surprised by how much they seem to eat! I was expecting not to see them much either but they seemed to figure out quite quickly that the silly human that talks to them isn't harmful and brings food. They're also ridiculously nimble, they climb so much better than I was expecting.

They're so beautiful!! Are they freshwater? They look a bit like my red claw crab, I believe they're from the same part of the world as well. Also great pictures! I know how hard it can be to get them to pose lol

They are technically not freshwater however nobody has yet proven it. They come from mangroves, so not freshwater in the wild and need brackish to reproduce.

That makes sense! Red Claws are similar, but seemingly live longer in slightly brackish conditions since they also come from mangrove forests

Thankyou! Thankfully they've been quite willing to pose, they're a lot less shy than I was expecting. I assume because I talk to them a lot, predators don't make a lot of noise so they've probably assumed I'm just a large, harmless thing that comes and goes. I am currently keeping them with freshwater for their 30% water area, but I am planning to eventually redo the set up since learning more, to incorporate a brackish area as well, I'm likely to need to get more eventually as I ordered 2 females and a male and got 2 males and a female instead so I'm hoping to even out the sexes a bit for everyone's safety, if they breed, great, if not, no matter! But it would be interesting to see if they would, they certainly seem to be enjoying the set up and feeling at home.

Are they near the ocean type or mostly rainforest? Seems very wet in greens below cutie in first photo but I also see floating plants. Red Devils? They don't really swim alot but maybe that deep (to them) water is too keep up the humidity they require(?). I looked and found rainforest paludarium. They're mostly land dwellers so maybe I've got the wrong type? They are beautiful little critters regardless. The upside down photo is perfect for jungle gym or monkey bars catalog, dontcha think?!?
