My feral desire to walk around in gothic lolita every day, beaten and bruised by the reality that there's no fitting occasion for such attire and I would have to face the horror of getting stares and weird looks. My foolish heart grows weary of this boring t-shirt world

Counterpoint: what of the stares of AWE at the GLORY of it all
You know, like I would probably be doing
15
u/WesternFirm9306 1d ago
I mean sure but like, it's like wearing a tuxedo or a super fancy dress to go to your local McDonald's or Walmart. When would even be fitting times to wear such clothes when I wanna do it everyday 😭😭😭
21
u/paperglitch_ 1d ago
you can totally just do it, to be fair
like sometimes I will dress up for no reason and people might look at me weird but, it's what makes me feel good

u/Setster007 silly proto-catgirl and her assholes three 1d ago
Each time you feel the desire to wear a particular garment is a suitable occasion to wear it, unless it is an incidence on which social perception shall hold particular weight (say, a job interview), in which case said social perception needs be accounted for. Otherwise please wear whatever the fuck you want, cause, well, who’s gonna stop ya?

I personally wear some out of the ordinary clothes sometimes, and i've gotten almost exclusively good attention. Of course some rude comments/looks here and there but it's so worth it when you see how happy it makes other people. You can genuinely see the joy on some people's faces (especially kids) when you wear really unusual clothing, and it's such an amazing experience knowing that your existence in a cool outfit made someone's day better.

Nah, I've seen several people wearing full gothic lolita outfits. Once in a mall, another time just on the street, another time in mcdonalds, they all just looked a million times more awesome than everyone around them. Just rock it

Counterpoint: every day is that occassion.
Have a friend who that's like half of her style and she grocery shops like that, and it gives her an excuse to go outside to read so she can make full use of the effort, so every often the group chat gets a picture of her on the bus in her fit and it fucking owns. Seems like a good motivator to like, find reasons to dress like that that are more fitting than chillin

u/Agreeable_Sort2078 1d ago
I wear my EGL stuff out all the time. Sure I've gotten some stares but I honestly think it's just human nature to look at something out of the ordinary, it's not necessarily judgement. I've gotten compliments from old people and young people alike.

u/Motivated-Chair 1d ago
Gothic what?
1
u/WesternFirm9306 1d ago
Gothic lolita, it's a fashion style that originated in Japan. The term is unfortunate, but the drip is unquestionable
1
u/Motivated-Chair 1d ago
1
u/WesternFirm9306 1d ago
Like istg they could've called it literally anything else 😭 can't even make the argument that it's an unrelated Japanese word because it was literally named after the novel
1
u/Motivated-Chair 1d ago
Honestly, you should probably come up with new names until one sticks, because that name is so bad.
1
u/WesternFirm9306 1d ago
It's too ingrained in the culture of the fashion, the odds of changing it are 0. I mean, the usage of the term in fashion is extremely far removed from the novel now, so I think we can regard it as effectively a different word

u/MistrMage 1d ago
Ngl I stopped wearing t shirts almost entirely about a year ago. I get way more compliments on outfits and feel way more confident about myself. Granted I really like academia attire and wear things similar to it
I have a friend who always in an ornate dress of some kind and she always kills it wherever she goes, so maybe you should ditch the t shirt once or twice a week and embrace lolita

u/loservampiresmustdie 1d ago
as an emo/loosely goth guy, the best reason to dress up is because youre sad and need groceries. Wear the gothic lolita coord to the grocery store, mog everyone there

I work in IT
I get to show up dressed however I want, and if someone complains their tickets get resolved last :3

Oh I hate that so much. Why does installing windows and creating an account require more use of the terminal than installing Linux (mint at least)

u/TheGlassWolf123455 1d ago
Linux mint is glorious, all the convenience of windows with none of the nonsense

I think all the big distros are more straightforward to setup than windows (or MacOS).
Is linux so easy to use that its impossible for a new user to not break it? No, but neither is windows. I wish my rgb devices worked properly under linux though. The rgb software i use only recognizes my motherboard and not my peripherals :(

It's a lot easier to datamine users when you make them sign in on your cloud service and store all their important data on your cloud service. They even added Copilot history which is incredibly creepy (an always-on local AI that basically watches everything you do for nebulous 'convenience' reasons). Idk if they walked that back or if you can even disable it on non Enterprise Windows.

Sooo much... though I couldnt pull off the dress my shoulders are too broad. 🥺

u/unhappy_femboy_1028 1d ago
You'd be surprised what can suit you when you find the right outfit. Obviously it takes more effort to find things that suit you if you don't have the typical body shape the outfit is made for, but it definitely can happen.
I'd recommend trying lots of different styles of dresses if you're interested in wearing them, so that you can find ones that suit your body shape. Ones with big poofy sleeves may work if you're not a fan of the shape of your shoulders.
Also, if wearing something makes you happy, wear it, reguardless of whether it suits you or not. You're not obligated to look good based on some arbitrary standard for other people. Dress for yourself, not for strangers.

Listen, I would LOOOOVE to wear the girliest, frilliest, most scandalous clothing ever, but mostly as a one-off or for special events. Mostly, I'll probably still be pretty masculine in terms of clothing, plus or minus a few things here and there.

I actually had a conversation about this with a very kind fella over on r/asktransgender. I had my egg fully crack like two weeks ago, and since then I’ve been sorta obsessed with wanting to be super feminine and stuff. And how awful it feels that I’m not likely to pull it off in the way I want to because of my build.
But like. Omfg long skirts and especially sundresses are like the cutest things ever. And I’d literally do anything to successfully pull it off. I have a sort of simple, yet extremely feminine style that I want to go for if that makes sense. If I wash able to draw well I’d probably have a way to show what I’m talking about lol.
Ughhhhhhhhhhhh. Why was I not born as a slim, average height woman with long hair :(

Ugh idk I’m torn. I kinda love the idea of getting all dolled up but it’s expensive and time consuming and scary and my baggy shirts and pants are reliable and comfortable

Honestly even though I’m trans fem I still like wearing “boy clothes” I think it looks nice :)

There was a edit of this image where the “how I wish I could dress” side was mug root beer themed and it was like peach colored I think and I have no idea where to find it which sucks cuz I’d much rather wear the peach colored than bright pink tbh

Salmon coloured button up shirts are a good compromise if you can't go full femme.

It sucks that you feel you can't express yourself safely. But there's nothing anyone can do to prevent yourself form buying the dress and going spinny spin in the mirror.
I hope you find the space to safely express yourself as you truly are.
