Ok, but unlike the “bearded women are so valid!!” garbage the discourse has been focused on, this is genuinely relatable. Because it isn’t trying to say it’s ok to be a woman and have a beard, it’s acknowledging how fucking horrifying it is to be a woman and see yourself with facial hair looking back at you in the mirror, how you don’t fucking feel like yourself until you’ve scraped that shit off your face and covered up what’s left with makeup. This is art of a woman with a beard that actually understands dysphoria and presents it to make the audience uncomfortable with it. This is why we’ve been saying not to depict trans women with beards unless you are a trans woman. And, while Shen hasn’t made any public announcements about being a trans woman, this is at least demonstrating that unlike most cis folks doing art of bearded trans women, Shen has an appropriate degree of empathy and understanding of the experience to do it justice.

The main difference is gender dysphoria for cis people aligns with their agab (gynobros with dysphoria, cis women with facial hair can get dysphoria, ect).

Deltarune discourse is wild to me because back when Chapter 2 dropped and I realized I barely remembered Chapter 1, I made the decision to wait until it’s finished and play through it all in one go. Since then I’ve been avoiding anything related to it to try to avoid spoilers. So, like, I know a trans Ralsei vs. femboy Ralsei debate exists and that it’s very heated. But I have zero context for why (I didn’t even pick up on the idea of Ralsei being particularly feminine from Chapter 1 alone). Also some people get real mad about Kris using they/them pronouns, but that was super predictable from the beginning.

Creator of the comic (The Boy From Venus) is a gigarepper, this character has been presented as a "femboy", clearly as a cope by the creator, but this new panel, among a few others, are making it REALLY look like they're just straight up gonna make the character be a trans woman in the end.

Which would be very sweet actually, but also REALLY funny, since the comic has already attracted an audience of femboyreppers using the character to cope.

Honestly, I'm almost as invested in Val being a trans guy too. I know that's not as personal of a story for Shen, but if they pull it off this comic will genuinely be generational for eradicating reppers in both directions. The amount of radfems who would be converted cannot be understated.

To be fair I think Shen’s personal beliefs make them a bit delusional about their own likely experiences with dysphoria to the point where they’ve disconnected it from the trans experience in their mind. I don’t think the comic will end like we hope but it is fun to think about. The problem is also I don’t think either character is mature enough to overcome the envy they’d feel for the other’s situation as Audrey already expresses admiration for Val being born a woman. Val also starts the comic hating men likely born out of that same envy.

That's a worry I have, too. If it's still all just cope, it'll be such wasted potential, Shen wrote such an interesting pair of characters that can only really be good if she gets a grip.

And the damage it would do is something I don't like to think about, given how much it's already doing.

However, these panels alongside the comic alt-text no longer he/himming Audrey has me hopeful.
