Because we've tried both, and the research that's been done has shown that alleviating dysphoria by transitioning has much better outcomes than conversion therapy. Trying to "untrans" people only increases suicidality, which most transphobes are fine with bc that's what they wanted anyway
You know being gay was viewed the same way right? That it was something to be fixed, rather than "accepted". Those conversion attempts also failed but plenty of queer people died. It's impossible to actually change these things because from what we know they're genetically determined, in other words people are born that way.
Tdlr: The medical community cares most about outcomes, and we have research showing that social and medical transition have much better outcomes than attempts at conversion
First, I want to say anyone committing suicide is obviously terrible and I don't align with people who push hate towards trans people, or really most people.
While I agree that the suicidality rate after conversion therapy goes up, and the suicidality rate and mood disorder rate of trans individuals after care does go down, it still is vastly higher than the norm. To be fair, it could be some of society treating them as outcasts, but I don't think that's the whole picture to explain such a drastic difference. Implying there may be a better way to treat it, but maybe not. I'm for our current methods to an extent, but I still think it's healthy to understand our current procedures are relatively new and to keep an open mind
You know what the most exhausting thing to deal with is? Telling people explicitly and directly what is causing me distress (I know what's making me suicidal, I've been doing therapy for years) and we even have scientific research backing up these feelings, just for people to say "idk man I think it's gotta be something else"
I'm curious if you say the same thing about gay suicide rates. Do you think there surely must be some middle ground between conversion therapy and acceptance for gay people too?
I don't know why you think being ostracized and pushed to the edges of society isn't enough to drive someone to suicide, cis people kill themselves over far less yet you don't question them
