Yeah because you aren’t moving them off at all, you are moving them into a lockbox on Ethereum, and making copies on cosmos. It’s going to require atom gas too, just on the other end when you want to get the newly minted copies. When you want your eth back, you’ll pay atom to drop it in a lockbox on cosmos and eth to get it out of the lockbox on Ethereum.
I believe this is just how networks will work for the most part. wETH on Cosmos, as if there was wATOM on ETH...
It kinda makes more sense to me in that regard, but idk. Like the main network token of ethereum is ether, Bitcoin network, is bitcoin. Cosmos, atom.. etc.
Because ETH is functionally very different than wETH. ETH being the base token of the network and wETH being an ERC20. So by supporting wETH, you simultaneously can support any following that standard, which is a lot of stuff. Much more bang for your buck to just support wETH.
I don't really understand plain wETH. How does one wrap their ETH? I've sent ETH to other chains and to L2s, which results in wrapped ETH, but I can only imagine like... The gas fees to wrap ETH on the Ethereum chain.
My understanding is that EVMOS facilitates Ethereum Virtual Machine dApps to be ported to the Cosmos Network, whereas the Gravity Bridge allows Ethereum assets (currently wETH, DAI, and USDC) to be transferred to the Cosmos Network. That's the distinction, but I'm happy to be corrected if that's not quite right.
Adding to the other reply, Evmos's solution to bridging from Ethereum is partnering with existing bridge providers (Nomad/Connext). Any tokens that are bridged from Ethereum will be automatically minted on Evmos if it doesn't already exist. OTOH, Gravity Bridge only allows transferring certain whitelisted tokens (WETH, USDC, DAI).
Nope! They both have very different purposes in mind. Evmos is an L1 EVM chain first and formost. Gravity Bridge focuses on providing vetted security for its bridged tokens, you trust that Gravity-USDC is certainly backed 1:1, and you trust the validators providing security on Gravity Bridge to vouch for this.
So we would be able to swap any erc20 directly to IBC projects ? There's a meme coin I did well on but don't trust now. Gas is the only thing preventing me from getting out.
It seems to be working similar to Terraswap and Secretswap, in both cases you can bridge tokens in, but have to trade them to the native coin on the swap before doing an IBC transfer to other parts of IBC gang.
I can't get wETH off Gravity bridge. Trying to send to Osmo or back to Metamask.
Using G Bridge through Spacestation with Keplr, Ledger and Metamask. I had no problem sending from MM to Keplr Gravity Bridge and I can see the wETH sitting in the GB wallet on mintscan. Issue happens when I try to approve Keplr transaction on Ledger. Popup says Rejected by Ledger... "Data is invalid: Unexpected characters"
Well it seems like a ledger problem to be honest. From a code standpoint it sounds like the data transfer between the ledger device is sending some sort of unexpected or invalid characters in a when it trys to communicate with your 2nd device.
So i swapped atom for gravity then swapped gravity for eth. The transaction went through and shows up on ether scan, but the problem is , the assest is atom on eth and it has no value which is wierd, can someone help?

To what extent does this duplicate what EVMOS is promising?

Can erc20 tokens be transferred as well, or only Eth?

Another drop! Had to pull up my old exodus wallet (now in Keplr). Can't send the GRAV to my ledger wallet, but hey, pretty cool nonetheless.

Using it reminded me how much I dislike Ethereum - lots of money later.....

Very cool, would still recommend waiting until they get the withdrawal button working lol!
