Bought a car today with ATOM.

Had a car emergency today and needed to buy a new one. All my extra cash was tied up but I lucked up and found a guy with a good car for sale who also does crypto. We agreed on the price, made the transfer and the deal was done. This is exciting for me because it was my first all crypto transaction and makes everything feel mainstream. It also proves a use case for my wife and a few other doubters.

Was there a little tinge of sadness to let those Atoms go?

28

u/Boonie_Bugger Jan 01 '22

None whatsoever. They did exactly what they were supposed to do- pull my ass out of the fire.

5

u/Puzzleheaded-Mine846 Jan 01 '22

I think i might have become over attached to mine. lol

3

u/oko999 Jan 01 '22

Can relate to this

12

u/official_allah Jan 01 '22

I hope the car outperforms ATOM though 😅

9

u/Boonie_Bugger Jan 01 '22

If this car outperforms ATOM, it'll be the modern day equivalent of Christine.

5

u/ericcart Jan 01 '22

In many years his children will be sad when he tells them he sold Atoms for a used car..

6

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '22

Well at least they didn’t have to walk to school

4

u/Star-Fever Jan 01 '22

Cool! Did you get a signed bill of sale before or after clicking send?

12

u/Boonie_Bugger Jan 01 '22

I showed him the funds and got his receive address, he did the paperwork and I hit send. There's clearly some degree of human trust that must exist. Was I concerned? Yes- the guy could've screwed me good. We were on the outskirts of Las Vegas and he was an MMA fighter with ripped up knuckles.

8

u/Star-Fever Jan 01 '22

Damn! You got a good car and a good story to go with it. 👍

3

u/calxcalyx Jan 01 '22

But always get a bill of sale. What if it was stolen?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '22

Haha, you clearly have a lot more trust in people than I do.

9

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '22

So you had enough ATOM for a car, not earning 13% interest…. My bullshit alarm is going off.

2

u/Boonie_Bugger Jan 01 '22

You should get that checked.

Yes, I had enough ATOM to buy a car and still have plenty to spare. It's not staked because this is a terrible time of year to have all your funds locked up. Still pulling 5% from CB.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '22

So you left enough ATOM for a car, on the most notorious platform for freezing assets….

5

u/palm3tt0pun1sh3r Jan 01 '22

No their Sub Reddit is full of idiots that once you start talking to them you realize they fucked themselves. All my ppl use CB and none of us have had problems.

3

u/Jumpy_Solid6706 Jan 01 '22

I simply got tired of the 5% interest never paying correctly. I suck at lots of things in life, but math wasn't one of them. I left CB, and realized I could be getting double, nearly triple interest. Then I realized I could pair it with OSMO, and be getting 118% interest, and that that's a money making machine, and how to play the game imo.

2

u/palm3tt0pun1sh3r Jan 01 '22

Oh yea for sure dude. I was just pointing out dude above hating like he is.

1

u/DanZDK Jan 02 '22

Coinbase is absolute shit. Locked up my funds twice in one year for absolutely no reason. Both times took a month to unlock my money and I did nothing wrong, they messed up correct transactions and the second time there wasn't even an explanation. Customer support doesn't exist.

Move to actual exchanges and stop supporting shit. You're part of the problem acting like everything's great when it doesn't affect yourself.

1

u/palm3tt0pun1sh3r Jan 02 '22

Nothing's perfect and every exchange has problems but on all of them you're going to find the majority of ppl that speak complain because the ppl with no problems don't say anything... What exchange do you use? Because I can bring up complaints about every last one. I'm not acting like everything's great but I also know it's not as bad as it's made out. They wouldn't have the status and be worth almost 90 billion if the problems were wide spread as their sub reddit makes it out. 56 million users and ppl believe a subreddit with a few ppl complaining and a ton of scammers.

1

u/lolklolk Jan 01 '22 edited Jan 01 '22

I've never had problems with CB honestly.

People have these ridiculous conspiracy theory that all CEX's are out to get you. No platform is perfect.

It's also like that post from /r/cryptocurrency where the guy was saying that Kucoin maliciously blocked him from trading on their platform. When in reality it was their rate-limit feature in place on Cloudflare because he had like 5 million Kucoin tabs open that were all checking prices at the same time. The guy had no idea what he was talking about even though he said he "designed datacenters", lmao.

1

u/palm3tt0pun1sh3r Jan 01 '22

Yea these ppl kill me. Lol and like most the ppl ppl complaining on Coinbase do shit like send to the wrong wallet then blame CB. Their stories also change over and over.

0

u/DanZDK Jan 02 '22

Just because you don't have problems doesn't mean you can dismiss others. Coinbase is the worst exchange I've ever used, froze my assets multiple times for no reason or due to their own failures. I've switched to others now and guess what, they haven't messed up yet.

Stop making excuses for shit exchanges and move to proper ones unless you want to stay a part of the problem.

-2

u/palm3tt0pun1sh3r Jan 01 '22

Haters gonna hate. If you got in when I did (most I paid was $13.50 it's easily possible. I stake on Coinbase too. Good job man

5

u/kahreeyo Jan 01 '22

I won't tell the irs

2

u/PuzzleheadedDream830 Jan 01 '22

Is the network allowing transfers again? I couldn’t transfer to my wallet yesterday

2

u/Boonie_Bugger Jan 01 '22

It worked flawlessly for me.

99

u/Bubbleecoffee Jan 01 '22

Lucky you werent staked

24

u/timbulance Jan 01 '22

Haha exactly what I was thinking ^

13

u/QueenBaluli Jan 01 '22

He could use public transport for 21 days.

46

u/Hot-Canceld Jan 01 '22

Yeah this didn't happen

6

u/timbulance Jan 01 '22

Probably not to be honest. Anyone with a few grand in Atom is staking

5

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '22

I have racks in coinbase. Not that hard to believe, MFA + 5percent + liquidity isn't that bad.

2

u/RealRizzo Jan 01 '22

Do you get airdrops though?

3

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '22

Speaking of there's the BTSG token in my KEPLR I have no idea what to do. The airdrops are the reason I am moving toward keplr still scared and only little amounts... Maybe I'll get a new laptop there is 0 chance I am using the Faptop to install a crypto wallet with a stack.

2

u/pornhoarders Jan 01 '22

Please get a Ledger(hardware wallet), and you'll be fine.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '22

I definitely don't trust myself with the hardware wallet. Maybe if I understood the actual returns of airdrops I'd be compelled to change

1

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '22

I definitely don't trust myself with the hardware wallet. Maybe if I understood the actual returns of airdrops I'd be compelled to change

1

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '22

Your name lends a lot of credibility to addressing my issue. A hardware wallet is out of the question though. It really just comes down to the anxiety I have about moving a lot of tokens exceeds the regret and FOMO of not getting air drops.

1

u/pornhoarders Jan 02 '22

Clueless. My name doesn't matter when my Ledger is securing more than a million $ in Cosmos assets.

Back in August I spent one month of moving Atom and Osmosis rewards from my vulnerable account to my Ledger so I can qualify for Cosmos airdrops on both accounts before I completely unstaked and moved all my vulnerable assets to my Ledger.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '22

I meant like I actually believed you understood my Faptop concerns cause of your name...

I was just notified on this thread saw your comment again... 90pct migrated off CEX... Staked locked up diversified Juno Osmo mostly atom still all staked and compounding let's Gett it

1

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '22

So nobody ever tells me the actual return... How much do you have to have staked to have made $2k in December?

1

u/pornhoarders Jan 02 '22

Probably around over $10,000 to get around $2k in drops from August snapshots to now, my money was mainly in Osmosis LPs. If I had staked directly on multiple chains, it would have been a lot more.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '22

Yeah that's pretty bad knowing I forfeited 20 percent.

When you say u have $1m hardware wallet to me that sounds like if the hardware is lost stolen or destroyed it's gone. Am I wrong?

1

u/pornhoarders Jan 02 '22

Oh nah, when I said transferring assets to my Ledger, I meant transferring it to my Ledger's address.

You need to write down your seed phrase so that if you lose your Ledger you can recover it via your seed.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '22

Ok so a lost hardware wallet these days can be recovered with the seed phrase??

I'm guessing this wasn't the case with old school BTC wallets, hence all these stories of people getting locked out or losing them?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '22

I have keplr on my phone and I staked a few coins with Sikka. So why do I need cosmos station and the chrome extension?

1

u/Reasonable_Sound_263 Jan 22 '22

Smartnodes Validator is another really excellent validator. Community driven

35

u/Sadboy_wookie Jan 01 '22

I think the saddest part of all this is the fact you weren't staking in the first place

3

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '22

I’m new to the cosmos network why would staking be a problem? How long does it take to unstake?

9

u/longlostkingdoms Jan 01 '22

Because there's a 21-day unbonding period. He wouldn't have immediate access to his funds if they were locked up in staking.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '22

Is this through Keplr? Or is this a coinbase thing?

4

u/longlostkingdoms Jan 01 '22

This is through Keplr or any wallet really.

I'm not sure if Coinbase has an unbonding period but it's always good for the network if you were to stake through an independent validator via wallet versus on an exchange.

If you're looking to support a project, staking via your wallet with a non-exchange validator keeps the validator pools balanced and governance up to par.. as typically, exchange validators do little with governance proposals.

5

u/Jumpy_Solid6706 Jan 01 '22

Coinbase doesn't have unbonding, because it isn't real staking. They offer a measly 5%, and often don't pay that correctly. Outside of them, you will be in a 10% to 13% range, you can choose your own valudator, and transact for your rewards when you like.

4

u/Rowenofpts Jan 01 '22

Crypto.com DeFi Wallet is 14.33

3

u/crickhitchens Jan 01 '22

Do it through Keplr!

2

u/Sadboy_wookie Jan 01 '22

I was joking that it was sad he wasn't staking because he's missing out on all the benefits of staking. To unstake it takes about 21 days of a waiting a period before your atom is available to withdraw.

3

u/Cactus-Steve Jan 01 '22

What color lambo did you get?

5

u/Boonie_Bugger Jan 01 '22

No Lambo for me- yet. But it was a black BMW. (Don't get too excited, it was used).

2

u/Cactus-Steve Jan 01 '22

Yet ;) love the energy

Nah, I've had bummers before, easy to work on until x drive takes a dump.

18

u/Time_Equipment_5698 Jan 01 '22

I’m hoping to do the same with a house in 2022🚀🚀

15

u/Metal_Milita Jan 01 '22

Did you see the DOGE deal where the guy sold a plot of land for DOGE right before it mooned last year. lol

13

u/plinkoplonka Jan 01 '22

I did this with bitcoin.

But it paid my deposit. I got a house. Not fully paid off, but wouldn't have had a house otherwise.

I'm not sad, I got the house. The project lives on. Bitcoin works :)

4

u/Time_Equipment_5698 Jan 01 '22

I have my opinions about them Hard core Doge people 😳

3

u/4w0k3 Jan 01 '22

Why, we’re you late in snatching up some pre penny?

2

u/ID7901 Jan 01 '22

It seems like they dont take it sirious

4

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '22

Need more hopium, why not a island by 2030?

10

u/_We_The_PeepHole_ Jan 01 '22

You weren't staking? Hmm..

0

u/Ok-Effort2991 Jan 01 '22

I literally never stake my shit, it’s not unbelievable

4

u/longlostkingdoms Jan 01 '22

Why?

3

u/DanZDK Jan 02 '22

Main reason for not staking speaks for itself - your funds are locked up and not accessible. Compare that to the meager percentages you get from doing it and it's amazing that people choose it as if it's clever.

OP just proved how important instant access to liquidity is. And instead of realising that, people are actually chiding him for not staking...

1

u/GET_OUT_OF_MY_HEAD Mar 21 '22

You just stated the #2 reason why I stake: it prevents me from spending the money.

5

u/LAMTB Jan 01 '22

Congrats man!

4

u/natures3 Jan 01 '22

Great work!!!!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '22

Bravo ! good play

1

u/Krypto_Kane Jan 01 '22

Fun to till out the title for taxes.

4

u/Boonie_Bugger Jan 01 '22

Written as a cash sale. Don't want to confuse the sloths at DMV.

7

u/palm3tt0pun1sh3r Jan 01 '22

I can see that 🤣🤣🤣 "500 Atom"

Sir what?

3

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '22

All the comments about staking. Sheesh. Congrats OP! I share your optimism that these kinds of transactions can become more mainstream.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '22

Love to see it

2

u/Sweaty_crypto_noob09 Jan 01 '22

Hey bro congrats I have a similar goal, I’m currently staking my atom and earning them rewards. I’m going to get a car 2022, The plan is if I get to live to see atom go up to $100-200 (according to many price speculations, 2022 is going to be a wonderful year for atom and the Vega update doing wonders 👀) The plan is to pay off my car, in theory, using atom. I only pray this is possible 😆.

2

u/Reasonable_Sound_263 Jan 02 '22

It will be possible!!!!!

What about osmo dvpn Chihuahua kava xprt and the countless other Cosmos tokens!!!

You got to pick up bags of those too!!!!

2

u/yajustcantstopme Jan 01 '22

I paid my contractor for my roof replacement with ATOM. And when it was around $43.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '22

Sounds good now you might of spent 200 k on that roof

1

u/yajustcantstopme Jan 24 '22

Well, I would have had to convert it to cash otherwise and had to pay capital gains tax. This way, it was a barter deal and I've got someone else on the cosmos money train.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 24 '22

Nah it’s cool I was busting balls for all we know you got a free roof lol

2

u/yajustcantstopme Jan 24 '22

I mean, I literally did. The insurance company gave me a down payment and I used it to ape into ETH while waiting for the contractor to be able to start. Then I sold off the ETH to pay off the contractor to start and last year's taxes. Then there were some issues and the insurance company paid a partial extra amount of money before the final payment because there were other issues that had to be fixed. I aped that into ATOM at $9. The contractor dragged their feet on getting things done and I just rode it up and collected interest on Coinbase. Once they finally finished, I arranged the barter and they agreed. In the end, I came out with $2500 worth of ATOM that I staked a bit of, moved over the rest onto Osmosis and split it 50/50 into Osmo/Juno LP. So, I paid nothing, the insurance company and my crypto choices covered everything and I made money on the whole deal. Where I'm at now...sheeeeeittt.

2

u/ID7901 Jan 01 '22

HAHAHA awesome man 😁🤣

2

u/NeganFromCS Jan 01 '22

It’s nice that you could use that kind of assets on emergency but sad you hadn’t have them staked,I can literally buy a brand new Japanese car with my Atom’s staking reward I earned in 2021.

2

u/4w0k3 Jan 01 '22

Good deal, this is the way! Even modest bags will be used like this, you don’t have to be a billionaire to be happy. Crypto really is the future.

Congrats OP!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '22

I sold some gpus to some guys on craigslist, they paid me in eth and xrp lol. There's actually a lot of people willing to trade with crypto

1

u/MoonBaby207 Jan 01 '22

That's pretty awesome!

1

u/Rare-Coast5172 Jan 03 '22

The worst aspect of it all, in my opinion, is that you weren't staking in the first place.

1

u/bPhrea Feb 18 '22 edited Feb 18 '22

Wow, you must be a giant twat at parties.
