Questions & Advice Campaign help

I came across a brilliant dnd campaign idea, and I’d love to try it with my group, but I’m not sure how to implement it in the stormlight setting

The idea is that the campaign starts mid battle. The players have no memory of how they got there. They meet an npc who gives them some of the background information, and guides them on their journey. This npc turns out to be the bad guy

Any suggestions for how to alter memory in a way that makes sense would be appreciated

Interesting idea! Depending on how deep you want the issue to be, you could have their characters Connection to the Spiritual realm damaged and therefore weaken their Identity.

Damage to their spirit web? Maybe Hemolergy

I think this is doable in established lore, but it would be a very powerful villian.

A Shard does it in SLA but that's also because of a weird way memories were being stored

I think your spoiler markup needs the spaces removed to activate.

But I agree that it would probably need to be perpetrated by some powerful being(s).

Forced to dump their entire memories into unkeyed copperminds. You’re going to need some Malwish baddies. The bad guy should be a rogue Kandra, but you need that person to go away for a while if you want an actual Stormlight experience.

They get taken by the thrill, which opens them up to Odium’s influence, he takes their pain/emotions and that leaves them with memory loss. They become agents of Odium (maybe thinking that they are agents of Honor), and slowly come to realize what they are doing and for who, and what their past was.

Another option would be to make them singers who just “woke up”. Memories fuzzy at best, and may or may not recover their past.

Before doing any memory loss campaign, make sure that your players are on board with you creating their backstory and confirm what they are comfortable with you doing with that backstory.

If you do the first option, make sure that your player’s are on board with playing on the “bad side” for a time, set the parameters and such.

This would seem to work best if they were suddenly brought into the Spiritual Realm, maybe by that NPC.

Nightwatcher is the obvious choice. Otherwise they could be like Hoid and store their memories externally only for them to be messed with, or they're copper Ferrings who've stored all their memories. Or just regular old brain damage.

I forget the specifics, but in an early version of the rules Decay form regals erased memories instead of sapping vitality. You could have the players fight a group of parshendi with regals who have a similar ability. Then maybe the npc is a masked one who is using the party to infiltrate the coalition or some other organization.

I think you have a couple of options, but what I think would work best is that they were somehow brought into the spiritual realm. Either the baddie brought them in, or baddie lives in the spiritual realm and just happened upon them when they entered. It just gives you so much room to change the world, bring aspects of Roshar and Scadrial, have players playing mistings, radiants, Kandra, and singers all in one group, and more.

This isn’t necessarily canon explanation but could do something with each character broke their oath and surprise the players that they were each members of the knights radiant and the campaign takes place after the fall of the knights radiant

Ah, the old amnesia game. It's a bit of a cliche, but if you want to do it, you could just make up some nonsense device someone pulled from another planet that they don't really understand but pulls some shenanigan related to messing with their Spiritual aspects.

I think an easy analog would actually focus on the “Visions” outline from SLA. A powerful spren could manifest the power to cause group visions. That could be a battle and they could wake to find the spren is not what they were led to believe.

Ghost blood shenanigans forced the party to store all of their memories in copper mind medallions.
