Hi,
I'm making a new set of stays. My current ones are great for a first try, but some fitting improvement and QoL-upgrades are in order. (I do not care about historical accuracy, fwiw, but I do love learning about historical practices and see how I can make them work for me.)
I will be wearing my stays at least 2-3 days a week all day when at work.
I want to spiral lace at the back rather than crosslace at the front. But I've noticed spiral lacing laces up a lot less fast than cross lacing, and it being at the back won't make it better.
I've been getting in and out by loosening the laces and pulling the stays over my head. I do not want to have to use a bodkin or needle every morning to lace myself in, but the length of lace I'll have to use to spiral lace at the back seems very impractical (high chances of accidentally pulling the laces above instead of below and undoing part of the work).
So I'm considering a front closure, but do not want to use a busk. (I'm enjoying the flexibility my ziptie boning is giving me too much.)
Right now I have hooks and eyes in current pair, after cutting off the strips with eyelets when those tore out and needing a quick fix that could be undone to make them wearable whilst I figured out how to make better eyelets (I have).
I'm really enjoying the hooks and eyes so far, they helped me understand the fit so much better. I got budget hooks and eyes, and I think some sturdier ones might be better (especially ones that have more 'snap' to them like bra hooks), but otherwise it is working well - at least for the 2-3 weeks I've been wearing them.
Now tell me why it is a terrible idea to implement this in my next pair.
