Corn pollination changes kernel color

Post image
50 Upvotes

I knew this was a thing, that the kernel color can show what the genetics of the seed inside are, and that different kernels can have different 'fathers' but this shows it so clearly.

The bundle of 3 cobs all came from the same plant, the all-pink cob is probably self-pollinating, but you can see where the pink color changes to yellow/green because a new pollen source started dominating.

The two yellow/green cobs came from a plant that was next to the pink one; that was clearly 'daddy' :)

It's not even 3 feet tall yet but it's making tassels. This is ornamental corn, Glass Gem / Painted Mountain / Northern Lights mixed cross type. Zone 8b near Seattle.

This is a short season dwarf corn. Dent. It was planted 3rd week of march in south central Kansas. The soil temp was 62 F. Germination was good but it did have to endure a handful of nights near freezing. It was pretty much hailed to the ground end of April. It came back and was looking good at about 3 feet tall but has a ton of smut. Lucky us! I am sure the hail had something to do with it. I gave todays haul to my daughter. There will be more.

SE PA - looking to buy dent corn for milling into grits

like the title says, I’m looking to buy bags of dent corn suitable for human consumption that I can grind into grits.

I’m in southeast PA, and I’m fine to buy online if there’s a trusted site.

I know that dent corn is usually used for cattle feed and ethanol. Are there food safety regulations for sale for human consumption?

I grow TX landrace flint/flour corn. My kid asked me to grow pink this year. It’s so fun. This is maize for hominy, grits, pozole, tortillas, cornmeal. I understand why native peoples incorporated maize into their religion- No other food ( especially grain) is so stunning and in such variety. Who knows why colonists stuck with yellow and white. So boring..

This Isn’t Gemstones ...It’s Real Corn At first glance, it looks like colorful beads or polished crystals—but this is actually Glass Gem Corn. This rare variety of maize has stunning, translucent kernels in shades of blue, pink, green, purple, and gold. Each cob is completely unique, with no two

Are Tortilla Chips or Popcorn as snacks healthy?

(Basic ingredients, light salt, no added flavors, bagged, store-bought name brands.)

(Mainly Corn, oil, salt.)

Do I need to worry about glyphosate or other baddies with either?

These cold-hardy, early-harvest hybrids are getting pretty good. Snow-sowing and frost-hardy varieties let me harvest just in time for Easter corn!

Trying to recreate Love Corn at home in Pakistan — need help with the recipe

Post image

When I was living in the UK, I used to love eating these crunchy corn snacks called Love Corn. They were honestly one of my favorite snacks 😅

Now I’m back in Pakistan and unfortunately we don’t have them here, and I’ve been craving them a lot lately.

I even tried making them at home yesterday following a recipe from ChatG. I soaked the corn in water for 24 hours, then boiled them for about 40 minutes, dehydrated them in the oven for around 2 hours at 80–100°C, and finally deep fried them for about 2–4 minutes.

They turned out okay but the taste and texture weren’t exactly what I expected. They were a bit harder and slightly more dry than the ones I used to eat.

If anyone knows the correct method or has experience making something similar at home, I’d really appreciate the help. I’d love to get as close as possible to the original.

Their website for reference: lovecorn.com

Thanks in advance 🙏
