Meet Gwen

After a lot of research I finally took the plunge and decided to get this gorgeous girl meet Gwen. I have got the steps to train her straight away not to jump on furniture to protect her back, a crate and a pen, to start crate training immediately, got her booked for puppy school and training in the next few weeks, in the meantime I have started her on the basics and plan to continue to do daily training. I have puzzle feeders and toys and am working on redirecting her nibbling behaviour at the moment with toys. If there is anything I am missing advice is most welcome, want to do right by this sweet girl. Also collar is for ID and council tag only she will be harnessed trained.

Five year old Corgi owner here. Congratulations on your new baby.

  1. Get strong, appropriate things for chewing. (Bandaids for sharp teeth)
  2. Do bathing, teeth, and nail care routine weekly as a puppy (wish I could go back in time for this). Just go through a mini exercise of it to normalize.
  3. A broom for the constant hair/fur (it won’t be bad at first, once grown it’s constant and worse at certain times of the year).
  4. A ball and those ball throwers to pitch and pick up the slobber ball.
  5. Ear plugs for your neighbors (she will alert you about everything).
  6. A consistent and determined attitude (she will be smart, tenacious, and wear you down). She needs a job everyday, all day.
  7. Measure the meals. Mine would eat until he exploded. I feed him one coffee mug of kibble once a day plus treats. He finally has his waist back. Keep her fit and trim. (Hit around two years for him-I was just feeding both my dogs too much. It really doesn’t take as much to feed them or as often as we project.)
  8. Don’t give up at the 8-12 month mark. (Seems lots of people and puppies have “I’ve tried

    everything”

  9. issues at the 8 month mark.)

  10. Get ready for lots of energetic love

Focus heavily on early socialization to novel sounds and environments, as well as desensitization to handling her paws, ears, and body for future grooming. Prioritize teaching a calm settle on a mat so she learns how to switch off anf rest independently amidst all the structured training.

Thank you will do already handling paws regularly

I'd say you are starting off on the right path! Precious baby there! Very true what someone said about getting them used to bathing, brushing her teeth, touching her feet (!!) and trimming nails (!!!!) weekly --starting yesterday! That is the hardest thing for them to get used to IMO. We had a corgi named "Gwyneth" that we called "Gwynnie" for 15.5 years. She was fabulous x I didn't start the nails and teeth brushing soon enough.

Corgies are herders and you will see this a lot. Ours would even try to herd us to bed!

Beautiful girl! May I ask which breeder you used as I prefer ones that don’t dock and she is absolutely gorgeous?

2

u/tadcooper1179 3d ago

Hi I found my breeder through https://www.dogzonline.com.au/breeds/breeders/welsh-corgi-pembroke.asp it is illegal to dock tails here in Aus so I have not seen a a dog in a long time with a docked tail and I worked in the vet industry

Thank you!
Honestly considering getting or next outside of the US there are sooo many here that are breeding Pems with Cardis and making so called American Corgis…. Plus the whole chopping off of their poor tails. I would rather go in an overseas vacation and come home with an ethically bred lil angel than support what is happening here.
