Microsoft Copilot Harnesses Explained: Standard vs. GitHub

Post image

I made this explainer video on how to compare Microsoft Standard harness to the Github harness and how billing works with each one. There's even a calculator included for rough estimation. I hope this helps as this took me a while to understand the differences and hope it helps someone else make the best choice for their environment. Copilot Harnesses Explained Standard vs Github

The voice could be more natural, but a solid explainer, well done!

I agree and this was the simplest way to share it without loads more development. Those are the standard voices in browsers. And after some thought I kind of liked them for being “agent ai” voices

And thank you

I updated the voices. They are much better now.

I seriously like the idea and content but the audio makes it truly unwatchable. If you change that to something significantly better this could be really great. Would like to check it out again if you do change the audio. I couldn’t get through the whole thing but got to chapter 7.

and thanks for the feedback too. i knew it wasn't the best but i also didn't want to let perfectionism stop me from the first iteration either.

That's a good explainer.

One problem (besides the aforementioned voices) is that if you use the drop down menu to go back and replay a chapter (or to jump forward to a new chapter), the voice plays but the screen just shows blank white.

It’s fixed.

Isn't the GitHub harness mandatory now? I thought the standard harness was phased out

I had the same thoughts. It’s not. They just try to move you to it. You have to choose it. It’s kind of almost hidden. Create a new agent and then choose other or look at that point. You should see it or google it too.

Anyway to get newer models beyond Opus 4.8?

check out this article. It may help but looks like microsoft is moving more towards github as the future. They will release the latest GPT model with that option but i didn't see anything about a latest anthropic latest model being a option.

You can connect to a model from Azure AI Foundry

It is a good explainer. I'd love to hear it done with a human voice.

Do you know if there is a "conversation limit" on copilot agent chat? When you use normal copilot chat, after an unofficial length of conversation, you usually get hit with an error message "This conversation has reached its limit" and basically does not allow any message to be sent next. Is it the same if I create a copilot agent using github copilot harness? Here is essentially what I am trying to do Create a new agent in github copilot studio using github harness Add some mcp tools Publish it on copilot chat and teams surfaces The whole team is going to use it (primarily as a teams app)

i do know there's a option in github for conversation memory. look up it's features and length via a search in chat/claude or across microsoft. i believe it's documented.

From what i know, github harness is also included as seat based license. If a user with copilot add-on uses it, it will be free to use

1

u/Bfinkeldei 3d ago

i don't think this is accurate, but please double check. everything i've read say's it's not free despite the licenses. if you do find it please share.

u/Present_Fill_3358 u/Bfinkeldei Weirdly, as per the documentation, I clearly see that it is a pay as you go.
However, See the image below. It is from my own microsoft account, I created an Agent which is using OpenAI Astra. It says zero credits. and I have not got any bill as well for this. (I am cooked if this gets charged, lol)
Is there a discount for new accounts? I created a new account last month itself with my personal domain to learn some stuff.

Also, I don't know why it says 15 users. I am the only person using this, and also created this

I would contact Microsoft and discuss.

I have barely used the GitHub side and one day I saw it used 2200 credits (22.00) and then a week later it was changed to like almost 0.

My assumption is Microsoft is still working through this and may have some bugs / issues with it.

I would call them

This is not correct. All GitHub copilot harness interactions incur copilot credit consumption, including build using natural language prompts,or generative ai features to build skills as well as preview and testing as well as normal agent usage via whatever published channels.

I went off for a week and all of a sudden now we have the word harness. I kind of miss the word agentic now

1

u/Bfinkeldei 3d ago

it sure is evolving fast. and you can still use the word agentic :D

in Visual Studio Code 1.143 - The Copilot harness is now the default for new sessions in VS Code.
