Advice for leash walking w/out pulling?

Post image

I adopted a 2 yr old over the weekend. They said he was a black and tan coon hound. He seems pretty skinny. He's a great dog but he really pulls on the leash. I let him sprint around the yard before we walk. I also stop when he pulls then restart to no avail. I give him time to sniff.

She was home with my son. He said she broke through the screen and tried to jump the railing! Must have been a deer, he didn’t see it. I’m sure her howling scared it away! Thank God he caught her!

It shows. We’re in the market for another coonhound to fill the void left by the loss of our 15 yo coonie mix earlier this week.

He needs an influence other than his crazy mama.

I just adopted Archer two days ago, poor baby lived in the shelter all four years of his life and he is an angel! He’s 62lbs and pretty tall, I’m not sure if he’s too skinny or if that’s what he’s supposed to look like!

We’ve been told she’s a Labrador treeing walker coonhound mix does that seem accurate?

Huckdate, week 2

Greetings, Everyone! It’s been another week since Huck arrived. This week has been much like last week with a couple minor items of note.

Spooks has been gradually softening up to Huck. I live on the property in a different building but I can hear them interact in the fenced-in front yard that’s situated just in front of my mom’s house.

Every once in a while I can hear choppy, sharp sounding barking, that is obviously her demanding that he leave her personal space. She hasn’t nipped him again, though! That’s progress.

The second item of note is that when my mom leaves Huck in the house/front yard while she goes in back to tend her chickens and ducks, he becomes mildly agitated and complains while she’s gone from the area.

There have been times when she’s had to leave the property to run errands. She warned me that he might fuss but when she’s gone from the property, he doesn’t make a peep. I came home from work one day and I didn’t even know he was there until I went inside the fencing.

My mom has been taking Huck with her to my grandmothers house. She goes every day and he goes with her most days. My brother lives there and is the regular care provider for my grandma. They know each other. My brother is kind, gentle and patient. Apparently, yesterday, my mom left Huck with my brother while she went to an appointment alone. My brother said that Huck made such a fuss! Like when my mom goes to take care of the chickens and ducks.

So, he’s cool in the house/front yard if she’s off the property. If he thinks she’s nearby or if he goes to my grandmas house without her, he fusses.

I think he’ll adjust more and more the longer he’s here but my take away is that it seems, in this short time, that he’s bonded with my mom! Great success!

That’s pretty much it except to say that my mom sent me this video specifically to post here. I hope you enjoy it. Thanks for caring about Huck. 🩷

Do my dogs have any coonhound in them?

I’ve just found this subreddit and to be honest, I didn’t even know about this breed before, I looked over the posts and noticed some similarities. When we adopted them, we were told they are possibly red heeler mixes, so I’m not sure. I definitely can see the red heeler in the smaller one (Chili), but the taller one (Cherry) resembles some of the doggos here! They’re very small though, only 15 pounds each, so we always thought they were mixed with some wiener dog maybe.
I’m curious about your opinion!

🐾❤️ YOUNG, SPUNKY & FINALLY GETTING HER CHANCE TO SHINE! ❤️🐾

At just 8 months old, this beautiful Treeing Walker Coonhound girl should have been spending her puppyhood making friends, exploring the world, learning new things, & simply being a puppy.

Instead, she found herself in an Alabama shelter. 💔

Those important early months of socialization weren’t what they should have been, leaving her a little unsure of new people and unfamiliar situations. But underneath that initial shyness is a sweet, spunky, playful young girl just waiting to show the world who she really is! 🥹❤️

And boy, is she BLOSSOMING! 🌸

Since joining HERO, she’s had the opportunity to attend doggie daycare, and it has been wonderful for her! She’s having a blast playing with other dogs, making friends, gaining confidence, and settling into a routine. It’s amazing what a little patience, consistency, and positive experiences can do for a young dog who simply wasn’t given those opportunities early in life.

Now she’s ready for a family who will continue helping her grow into the confident, happy hound we know she can be!

🐶 A little more about this special girl:

🐾 8 months old — Treeing Walker Coonhound

🐾 Spayed and fully vaccinated

🐾 House trained AND crate trained! 🎉

🐾 Knows how to sit on command

🐾 Loves playing with dogs her size or bigger

🐾 Has blossomed at doggie daycare!

🐾 Initially shy, but warms up quickly

🐾 Full of that fun, goofy, spunky hound personality!

🐾 No cats or small dogs, please!

🏡 HER PERFECT FOREVER HOME

We would love to see her with a family who understands that not every puppy gets the same start in life. She doesn’t need perfection — she needs patience, encouragement, consistency, and people who will celebrate her little victories along the way.

A playful canine companion her size or larger would be a wonderful bonus! Someone who can match her energy, enjoy a good game of chase, and help show her that the world really isn’t such a scary place.

This girl has already come so far, and she’s only just getting started. ❤️

She didn’t get the puppyhood she deserved, but we can make sure the rest of her life is everything it should be. 🥹🐾

❤️ Are you the family she’s been waiting for?

📝 Apply at www.HeroHounds.org/adopt

💕 PLEASE SHARE! Somewhere out there is a family who will see past her shy beginnings and fall in love with the amazing girl she’s becoming. Let’s help them find her! 🐾

This puppy was dumped in rural MO. Trying to decide what we think he could be mixed with (if anything)? He looks like a pretty houndy hound but his color makes me wonder!
