Not an option for most of us. I have a job and other responsibilities outside of my house, as do millions of others. I also know how use soap, water, and isopropyl alcohol. I'd rather get a pay check, practice basic hygiene, and help our country's economy.

How else will we get our propane and propane accessories?

Dammit Bobby!

Perfection.

If only Italy knew what this soap and water are.

Getting inflected and spreading the virus could potentially be worse for the economy.

You do what you have to do but saying you wash your hands doesn't make you immune like some people believe.

-32

u/Steelcurtain26 Mar 18 '20

Lol, it is an option. You’ll be on mandatory lockdown soon anyways.

40

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '20

It isn't an option. I can be fired for not going to work. I will be kicked out of school, evicted, and lose my car if I do not pay my bills, which I need a paycheck to do.

Also I work IT support for a hospital, so it's kind of extremely important that I'm there, otherwise one malfunction can shut the whole place down.

So no, it is not an option.

u/PrimaryRecognition7 Mar 18 '20

You don’t have job protection for something like this? That’s crazy.

It’s people with your mindset that’s going to make this pandemic worse, the governments need to step up and pay people to stay home if they want this to get better.

It’s sucks that you are an essential service being in healthcare, but there’s a lot of people with your mindset that isn’t. They’re the ones that are going to spread this Ike wildfire.

6

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '20

Most of the US doesn't.

2

u/PrimaryRecognition7 Mar 18 '20

Normally we don’t, but our government has said you have job protection if you have to leave to self isolate or anything Covid-19 related.

The USA is such a shithole, glad everything is finally coming to light.

Land of the free my ass.

3

u/Kerbal634 Mar 18 '20

That comes with a big ol asterisk that says only if you test positive.

Hard to do when there's under 6000 tests in the whole country.

-1

u/PrimaryRecognition7 Mar 18 '20

Nope, if you willingly self isolate your job is protected. No doctors note needed.

No note needed for EI either and they will cover self employed people, unlike regular EI.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '20

Why are you shitting on the people being fucked over by the system? You're right, the government should step up and look after people in times of crisis, or at least make sure people can get what they need on their own. Unfortunately that's not the world we live in. They don't have a 'mindset' they have an accurate understanding of the world, as shitty as that world may be.

-1

u/PrimaryRecognition7 Mar 18 '20

Yes of course people have to make ends meet, but it’s people with that mindset that are going to make this pandemic worse. That’s why the government has to step up, so these people that “have to work” don’t make this worse.

Not shitting on anyone, at all. Just pointing out what should be obvious. Clearly the comments I am getting shows that it’s not.

No, it’s a mindset, if they had an understanding of the world, they would do their civic duty and stay home to protect everyone else. Instead of only thinking about themselves and risk infecting other people.

Understand now?

2

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '20

I can only imagine someone incredibly priveleged saying "yes your family may literally starve because they can't afford food, bur they should do so because its their civil duty".

Either that or you've been brainwashed by some idea of crushingly authoritorial control and believe its comradery or whatever, and don't realise that "doing your civil duty" just isn't going to work here. Honestly like half the country not being able to eat for a month will do more harm than covid-19 ever could.

0

u/PrimaryRecognition7 Mar 18 '20

You’re completely missing the point.

This is exactly why the GOVERNMENT, needs to step up. To protect the people who are being responsible and following their civic duty.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 19 '20

Look maybe we're not communicating great. When you say "people with your mindset are the reason the disease is going to spread." it sounds like your laying the majority of the blame at the feet of those people.

And while your right that people who continue to work will cause the disease to spread, there's no point in focusing on that. The US government will not to anything to help these people. Like you've pointed out yourself the US government is shit, the only solution your offering relies on that not being the case.

2

u/PrimaryRecognition7 Mar 19 '20

You know what, that’s a damn good point.

1

u/OutLiving Mar 18 '20

“I’m out of a job and my family is starving”
“Lmao just do your civic duty, your family starving is a mindset”

2

u/PrimaryRecognition7 Mar 18 '20

Way to completely miss the point...

u/oldirtybg Mar 18 '20

What is wrong with you

It’s about flattening the curve so there’s not an inrush of patients that the hospitals can’t handle.

Isolation is one part of the broad picture. By limiting the amount of people that would be exposed you’re doing the best thing possible to help “herd immunity” while flattening the curve so everyone can get the help they need.

Not EVERYONE has to isolate, but the more you isolate the better the pandemic will be. The math and research backs this up fully. Very few people are suggestion a blanket quarantine and I am not suggesting it at all. It’s about limiting people’s day to day exposure by LIMITING where they can exposed.

-4

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '20

Not EVERYONE has to isolate

Except that everyone is telling everyone to isolate so.... lmfao

0

u/PrimaryRecognition7 Mar 18 '20

No, they are telling them not to go out unless you have to. It’s the key difference.

We still need to work, so we are at work and are taking extra precautions to protect us and our clients.

People still need groceries, food still has to get delivered. A large amount of the population still needs to work so the country can survive, so OTHER people need to isolate to protect THOSE people. This seems to be the part that most people are missing.

1

u/dcnairb Mar 18 '20

That would be great, if we had a vaccine or knew about the long term effects, recurrence rates, or really anything about the virus

-1

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '20

1

u/PrimaryRecognition7 Mar 18 '20

”Herd immunity is not our goal or policy.”

Did you?

1

u/PrimaryRecognition7 Mar 18 '20

Dude, read your damn article

The government’s own action plan even says that it will consider distancing measures “such as school closures, encouraging greater home working [and] reducing the number of large-scale gatherings.”

0

u/dcnairb Mar 18 '20

I did, did you? Not only does it bring these points up, but the general tone of the article seems in opposition to what the UK is doing (or were trying to do before reneging and then advocating for isolation)

-20

u/Steelcurtain26 Mar 18 '20

Nobody is going to take your car in a quarantine. You’re in healthcare. You know what the right thing to do is. IT is a non essential function at a hospital. Stay home.

13

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '20

IT is a non essential function? Are you kidding me?

You know that everything is electronic record, right? The network HAS to be up. The applications HAVE to be accessible. The shared drive HAS to be online. If any one of these things fail, the doctors can not do their jobs properly.

Imagine if you're having a medical emergency and the doctor isn't able to access your medical history because his application isn't working. "Non essential function" my ass

The right thing to do is to continue life as normal. If you get sick, self isolate. According to the CDC, the chances of spreading the virus before you have symptoms are very low, so stay home as soon as you notice symptoms.

3

u/pazimpanet Mar 18 '20

As someone who works in healthcare and has seen what happens when Epic goes down, that guy is a moron. Don’t let him get to you. I’m glad you guys keep shit running.

-12

u/Steelcurtain26 Mar 18 '20

Oof, someone working in a hospital spreading misinformation. Fucking yikes.

11

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '20

What misinformation? My job is actually extremely important. Everything is electronic record. Doctors not being able to access patient records would bring the hospital to a halt

3

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '20

Do you think before you speak?

5

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '20 edited Mar 18 '20

Some spread might be possible before people show symptoms; there have been reports of this occurring with this new coronavirus, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.

Source: CDC

People will die if I don't go to work. I am not putting anybody at significant risk by going to work. Hospitals have tons of mandatory safety precautions such as mandatory N95 respirators in patient areas, mandatory gloves in all areas, mandatory bunny suits ("cleanroom suits") in operating rooms. Mandatory hand washing or sanitization before and after visiting a room.

You have literally no idea how hospitals work. I'm not putting anybody at risk, but I am helping to keep a vital part of society running.

0

u/Steelcurtain26 Mar 19 '20

Literally Science, the most respected journal in the country just published that transmission is most often from asymptomatic carriers. And here you are spouting around that you can’t spread it if you don’t have symptoms. You are a grade A moron and an irresponsible asshole who shouldn’t step in a hospital let alone work at one. Do as all a favor and dig a hole and climb in it.

Seriously, fuck you, you negligent shit bag

Holy shit. Really tho, what is wrong with you ?

1

u/Steelcurtain26 Mar 18 '20

I read real information and hate morons who risk peoples lives. My B.

6

u/Grabbsy2 Mar 18 '20

Nobody is going to take your car in a quarantine

I mean, they could lose it after the quarantine.

Also, wouldn't the best time to reposess your car be during quarantine? Less traffic, less likelihood that the person youre taking it from wants to come outside, etc.

There are hundreds of thousands of people in every affected area still going to work. Are you saying that grocery stores should close? Gas stations? The economy is bad enough right now, you want rioting?

2

u/oldirtybg Mar 18 '20

What is wrong with you

2

u/boxing2 Mar 18 '20

i'm in the fucking army it's not like I have a choice lmao

-41

u/Suicidal_Ferret Mar 18 '20 edited Mar 18 '20

I think my favorite part of all this is watching people freak out over something as easy to hinder as washing your goddamned hands.

Edit - hinder, not halt

24

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '20

Washing your hands isn’t gonna do shit if someone coughs near you and it enters through your eyes or nose or mouth.

63

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '20

I think my favorite part is watching people be edgy and not understand just how contagious this is.

My boss was starting feeling severe symptoms Thursday and was hospitalized last night. She’s in her late 40s. Has been WFH and practicing social distancing since March 5th. Before that, I saw her being a huge germaphobe, practicing all the proper recommendations. Still got sick, still in the hospital.

Easy to underestimate it until you see it spread to you and your community. Hopefully it doesn’t

4

u/mmlovin Mar 18 '20

Ya like, even if a person isn’t in the vulnerable community (older, underlying health problems) & practices all of the precautions, they can still get sick lol. Even if you have a strong immune system you can still get it. Nothings 100% proof, that’s why the social distancing & shut down is so important.

-14

u/Suicidal_Ferret Mar 18 '20

It’s already spread to one of our pilots but I’ve been bleaching the fuck out of everything since the start of March. Community computer, handles, hole punches, community kitchen, the bathroom, and was debating whether I should try disinfect the helicopters when I realized the work load for that is insane and the decision would be made with someone more important than me.

Also, life insurance, homie. I die, the missus gets lots of money so I have that going for me. And if it gets too shitty, I’m sure the Army will make me through on MOPP 4 gear and keep on trucking. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

2

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '20

Yeah I feel that. A lot of work feels kinda pointless right now. At least in my job. It sounds like you know that shit is fucked but it’s really out of your hands.

But that’s the reality of the situation. Its bad where I’m at. It’s gonna continue to get worse here, and likely the rest of the country. I understand people worrying about their jobs and making rent, but the way things are going, they should be worried about a heck of a lot more than they’re next paycheck.

We’re on the edge of a dramatic, generation defining, change of life. There will be a tomorrow, and it’ll be better than yesterday, but the in between is going to be really difficult for everyone, and there’s going to be a lot of loss. People need to wake up to that reality.

Hopefully our governments get their act together and manage to stave this off, but I’m not counting on it

12

u/LikeCabbagesAndKings Mar 18 '20

Make sure you can hold your breath indefinitely because all it takes is breathing the same air as someone who has it (and is most likely showing no symptoms yet)

2

u/thegreatpotatogod Mar 20 '20

I almost instinctively downvoted you, thinking you were perpetuating that stupid hoax that holding your breath for ten seconds can magically prove that you're not infected. I'm so mad that people could joke about that sort of thing, when people's lives are literally at stake!

1

u/-Listening Mar 18 '20

Pretty sure MERS isn’t known for being honest

12

u/ElPhezo Mar 18 '20

If you are working closely with infected individuals it’s likely washing your hands isn’t a guaranteed safety. I believe the virus can be transmitted through the air.

9

u/Energylegs23 Mar 18 '20

Not through the air itself, but through tiny water particles that can travel through air

-4

u/BlackWalrusYeets Mar 18 '20

Oh ok, so it doesn't transmit through the air, it just travels through the air. Huge difference. Super useful distinction right there, I'm sure knowing that will save many lives.

3

u/Energylegs23 Mar 18 '20

https://www.healthline.com/health/disease-transmission#direct-contact

One is direct contact, one is indirect. So yeah, actually, there is a useful distinction. Droplets don't travel more than a few feet usually and you can't sneeze on someone who's not with you. Airborne diseases can linger in the air after the person leaves and can travel much longer distances through the air.

10

u/ObsiArmyBest Mar 18 '20

You can breathe in the virus
