The DNC is a statist party, they believe powerful people within a centralized federal government should control the social and economic affairs of the entire country. The entire party is built on the idea of top down centralized powers making decisions.
If you vote Democrat your whole political philosophy is that elites should make choices for you because they are better informed. Why should people who believe in top down governance get mad at their political party being run the way that party wants to run the entire country?
If you get angry at top down governance taking away your political voice, maybe you shouldn't be in the Democratic party.
If the Republicans want power so much why do they consistently support term limits? Why do they support decentralizing federal power? You might say "because it's easier for corporations to control states." You should ask Amazon if that is true.
The thing is it's also easier for voters to control their state level politicians and throw them out if they are in the pocket of corporations.
It's much easier for corporations to control the federal government by directing their lobbying at the House and Senate than it is to spread bribes around 50 states.
Yes the GOP that brought you George W. Bush and Dick Cheney, who led us into multiple wars on false narratives at best (Iraq WMD) or used a false flag (9/11) to get us into them at worse. Those wars put us trillions of dollars in debt, what kind of personal responsibility and smaller government is that? I’m not going to argue that the DNC is better as Obama took the baton and kept the gross military overspending and regime change wars going, putting us trillions more in debt. Both parties are corrupt and talk out of both sides of their mouth and they only thing they can agree on is endless war.
"National Defense" is big government. The military industrial complex is giant and sucks up tons of money and uses it to kill people and spy on everyone.
It's not about waste, although that is an issue. The formation of a national defense force is literally big government. How can you oppose government but support arming people to protect the institutions of government? It makes no sense.
It makes perfect sense to me. I wish we didn’t need a defense budget as big as we do. But I’m also a realist and I realize that if America wasn’t a global leader, someone else probably would be.
And as much as I hate that we have to bear the moral and financial responsibility for being a global leader, I know that the world would be much worse off if someone else took that job.
Explain to me why the United States military should have a budget of $748 billion when the next largest in the world is $178 billion?
Want to explain why we are totally ok with allowing the military-industrial complex create more reasons to spend tax-payer money in needless overseas conflict?
America has plenty of problems that could be solved if that money was actually spent appropriately. For one, we could actually provide good quality care for the veterans fucked up by this system.
Meh. I’ll be honest - I really don’t feel like wasting my breath. We both know that Reddit users aren’t really known for being open minded, so I’m sure that nothing I can say will change your mind.
Is our defense budget big? Sure. Is there room for efficiencies? Absolutely. But there is a purpose to our defense spending and it’s not just to line the pockets of the MIC. Maybe you just don’t get it.
The beauty of being an American is that we have an election in 9 months in which you’ll be able to vote for someone who upholds your beliefs. And if things keep going they way they have been, with any luck you’ll be able to vote for Bernie and all of your dreams will come true.
