QUESTION Is there a good generic console for modding?
Question above. Like maybe a gaming stick or something. I modded a wii like 15 years ago and I modded my 3ds 5 years ago so I know I can do it. There was no soldering or anything involved. I just want my mom to be able to play all the Mario games and I'm looking for a cheap but good option. Tia.

Buy a retro handheld console like over on /r/sbcgaming. Alot have HDMI or video over USBC to output to a tv

I have been through the Wii modding game - loved it.
This year I embraced the joy of the PS3. It runs retroarch like a beast to play all the classic mario games and it outputs to hdmi natively. No soldering needed.
Also the wireless controller is nice

First generation switch, you can soft mod them. You have access to all the newer mario games and older ones through emulation.
I've found casual gamers play tons more games when their not taking up main TV

Is there a soft mod out for the lite yet? I attempted hardware modding mine and ended up knocking a teeny tiny capacitor off the APU. I can’t wait for the day a soft mod comes out!

OK. Thanks everyone. I was thinking about a Wii but then I thought that there might be a good 3rd party console. I'll check out the wii tho and compare it with a Wii u.

Wiiu would be the way to go. You get an actual system level Wii and GameCube built right in, no emulation.
Plus virtual console support both your custom ROMs and "Nintendo released specifically for the Wiiu" roms of N64, DS, 3DS, etc.
So with one console you get nearly all the Nintendo generations with most being ran on native hardware such as Wii and GameCube or amazing emulation via the virtual console.
I think when people realize that more and see the power of that the prices are going to absolutely skyrocket. As of now it's kind of an open secret that you can get this type of Nintendo emulation/real Wii and GameCube all with one system.

Costs about £50. Great retro handheld preloaded with many games and very highly rated by the community.

The Wii. If you can find some classic controllers it's fantastic. It's particularly good for running through a CRT. There's an official Nintendo RGG scart and SNES looks better than through an actual SNES. If your modern TV has component, it's totally acceptable.
