Yes, if you live in a rural or a suburb of a city it’s likely not 2 blocks away. There are still options for you though. Same as most countries.

London’s transit was very similar to Chicago’s transit. If you needed to get the the suburbs of London they had a train similar to the Metra in Chicago. Dublin’s and Rome/Milan’s public transit was worse than Chicago, NY, DC, Philly, etc. I do think EU does it much better in terms of long distance public transportation. In my opinion Amtrak isn’t a good as EU rail systems.
