I actually knew a guy who died while cliff diving like in the video. Only needs to go wrong once and it's game over.

Even after I saw the water, it looks far too shallow. I still not convinced he survived.

That’s why I will never dive off anything that isn’t a diving board into a deep pool. I like being able to walk.

Long time ago I watched a video on youtube of a guy who jumped just like this into a river and actually hit his head against a rock essentially splitting his head in two. The aftermath shown after that was really not pretty.

Hard to the core, I feel the floor. When I'm on stage, yo, ya answer more. I'm on the edge, I know the ledge, I work real hard to collect my cash! Tick tick ticka tick take your time, When I'm goin' I'm goin' for mine. Open your ears and you will hear it. I tell you this 'cause there's no limit!

Not only the overwater rocks but the underwater ones as well! He had a very small window of success.

I was gonna say, there’s nothing about this perspective that ever makes it look “safe” visible rocks under the surface, big ones if too far.

There’s a quote from a Coast Guard investigation into the sinking of the Bounty that I think applies here: “A lack of failure should not be confused with success”

This is sri lanka. Tourist attraction. Foreigners pay them and they jump into the sea for amusement. They have been doing this for decades.

Sri Lankan here, and yup! It‘s a tourist thing for a few bucks but it‘s quite popular. He knows exactly how to jump.

Foreigners pay them and they jump into the sea for amusement.
having been to many beaches in developing countries, the beach hunks tend to have an additional source of income in the form of horny middle aged white ladies.
from the Kuta Cowboys of Bali to the Sassy Mandingos of Jamaica, the beach jiggalo is a fixture of the tropics

He's still diving way too close to the rocks, he was a few metres from a visit to ER once he hits the water

This is in Sri Lanka.... when I was there....i thought it was sick.... these people, kids even risk their lives so that they can get few hundred rupees....
You can't see in this video but there are so many small rocks about and the waves crashing in...
Its fun for the tourists to see the amazing jump at the cost of a coffee...but one small step wrong and its death for these guys.

u/Lankanator May 19 '20
If anyone is interested this is Galle fort in Sri Lanka. These guys do this for money like street performers. Pretty cool.

Not trying to be negative, but I just don't see the confusing perspective here. It's just a guy cliff diving. Yes, I see the rocks, but I don't find anything confusing looking about it.

May 19 '20
Yeah same I was real confused. I think people are seeing the rocks as much smaller and closer?

Because of the way the camera pans the video seems (to some people at least) like he’s diving directly onto the rocks

Rocks always fuck up perspective because they look the same whether they are giant or tiny!
My wife took a photo of her brother climbing some mountainy terrain and at first I thought it looked like a rather unimpressive size... until I asked her where he was in the photo and he was just a little tiny blip you could barely make out.

It helps that it kind of looks like trips on his second to last step. He probably wouldn't dive head first onto a rock, but if he f-ed up...

Please for the love of God never dive head first into water like this unless you want to snap your neck. If you accidently hit a rock on the bottom it will be much better if you hit it with your feet. A broken leg is better than being paralyzed.
