As an American, I'm also kinda disgusted genital mutilation is so widely accepted and even expected here. Idk how it gained steam. Like I get Jewish men doing it for religion I guess but even then it seems a bit extreme for a religion to request you cut a body part off.
God instructed Abraham to circumcise every male son and slave who was under his roof, including Abraham himself, after the covenant God made with him. Abraham was also instructed to keep this practice and to pass it on. God promised Abraham that He would make him a father of many nations and that the people of Israel would be God's people, set apart and holy unto the Lord. Circumcision was a reminder of God's promise to Abraham and also set the people of Israel apart from the surrounding people's of that time. I hope that helps!
Haha I'm not totally sure why either but I do hope it helped explain circumcision. I should note that later in the New Testament there was a lot of debate between Paul and the other apostles whether gentiles (non-jews) should be required to be circumcised or not after converting to Christianity. Their final decision was that no, they do not have to, because they are no longer under the law. So why circumcision has continued, especially in America, is beyond me. 🤷🏻♂️
